The blight in my tomato patch is spreading. So tonight we're going to harvest everything but the cherry tomatoes, and have a discussion about blight - what can cause blight, and how I'm dealing with it this year. Be sure to check out an upcoming video, the learn what I'm going to do with all these green tomatoes ♥

Good morning 1870s Homestead. Look at the bright side: Think about how many delicious fried green tomatoes you'll be able to fix with that huge green tomato harvest - a wonderful down home Southern meal.

Blight is so common here in MO. We get it every year at the end of the season. It never stops my tomatoes from turning red. Plants look horrible, but tomatoes are good.

I just take most if not all the leaves off, and trim the tops of plants..it forces them to ripen faster.

Same here. My plants are suffering with it here in the Chicago area. But I've been pulling off the dead leaves on the bottom and spraying with Copper Fungicide and the plants have grown tons of pretty new growth, flowers and new tomatoes at the top. So I'm going to let them keep going as long as they will. And yes, tomatoes are ripening just fine.

The one thing I didn’t hear you mention was good old-fashioned fried green tomatoes. They we’re something we always looked forward to when I was a child. I remember getting belly aches from eating so many. And, as kids, we knew when the fried green tomatoes started, the hard graft of summer and harvest was almost over.

Whippoorwill Holler YT channel has a recipe for mock apple pie using green tomato's. I've not tried it yet but she and her hubby says it tastes just like apple pie. We save our green tomatos, wrap them each one individually in newspaper, stack in a box. We've had them last until December. Check them once or twice a week, pulling out the ripened. Tastes just like they had ripened on the vine.

We had blight about 12-13 yrs ago, maybe longee. That yr my husband had bought some tomato plants from a big box store to grow with my Amish heirloom and regular cherry tomatoes.... was badddd!! Funny thing was majority of heirlooms were not affected by it, but cherry tomatoes were and the big boys he bought were. It came from box store major grower that yr. I made sure I saved heirloom seeds!! Don't put affected plants in compost!! Burn them. That's what we were told to do.

I had early blight this year. I was able to keep it at bay most of the summer by spraying with copper fungicide and removing the infected leaves. My tomatoes held on and produced great until the end of August and then some of the fruit started getting blight as well. It's the first year I had to pull the tomato plants out so early. Normally I can keep my indeterminate tomatoes going until our first frost in October. One bright spot is that I put in a bigger fall garden than usual. I'm going to try canning some greens this year for the first time.

Oh, thought of this in the last video you showed the luffa. If frost is coming, you still may be able to get those to finish ripening by pulling the plant and hanging it upside down somewhere somewhat protected. Probably not a huge set of luffa, but better than losing out on those two completely. (Not sure if your wild mice would go after them, my mice turn their noses up at luffa, but they've never shifted for their own food either.)

Thanks for the great ideas for green tomatoes. We buy most of our tomatoes from our Amish neighbor who is a market gardener. He gave us a flat of tomato plants this spring that he didn't have room for. Last time I went to get produce he asked how they were doing and about blight. I told him I thought I may have seen some and he recommended the same thing....pick everything if you see it. I love your videos. Thank you for giving us options. I didn't know anything about how to use green tomatoes.

We make "Green Tomato Ketchup". It is a Chow Chow without the corn. It is a southern staple we use as a condiment but also in other recipes (tuna salad). If you have been to a restaurant called "cracker bucket" and got the pinto beans, they ask you if you want onions and relish. This is the Relish. Looking forward to your recipes. So sorry to see you saddened by this Rachel. Ive struggled with blight the last couple years, here in NW Ohio. I've been growing more plants to compensate. I seems that by the first week of Sept, when the blight takes over, I am about worn out with preserving tomatoes. At last count Ive processed nearly 250lbs of tomatoes. I just recently made catsup, that surprisingly turned out good. I tried Sarah's recipe from Living Traditions Homestead. I hate to see my nice plant babies that I started from seeds die. I just comfort myself by looking at it as part of the process. I will try harder next year to mulch more now that you shared this possible remedy. Tomorrow is chopping and freezing day for my lovely sweet peppers. Soon I can get to work on my crop of apples. I have Stamens, Granny Smitth, and Pink Ladies almost ready.😊

I live in Alabama and had some blight as well. It was such a hot and humid summer here….had to really stay on top of it. Luckily it seemed to only hit one variety instead of all. But I cut off a ton of branches and threw them away as I began to see any damage. Still a bumper crop here as well in spite of the blight. Thankful!!

What a great harvest! As soon as I found blight early on I tried the calcium remedy and that did nothing. So, I trimmed the leaves away from the ground and put down a heavy mulched on half of my tomatoes and the other half grass clippings. Both did great! The grass clippings were free, so next year that's what I'll do. I'm looking forward to you green tomato canning recipes. Also, I wanted to mention that night shade vegetables started to reek havoc on my health and removing seeds and skins is a must for me now. I know you haven't been feeling that great, so I thought I'd mention it.

I know you mentioned that you weren’t going to garden in 2023 or you weren’t planning on doing as much gardening next year. But, My question is how would you treat that soil before you plant tomato’s there again? My tomato’s, that are in raised beds (first year, new soil), seem to be getting late season blight. I’m in zone 5 (VT) and our growing season is winding down but I’m wondering if there is something I can do either this fall when I put those beds “to bed” for the season or in the spring before planting. I have limited space and planned to plant tomato’s again there next season. Big hugs Rachel! Sometimes all the things we do or have to do catch up with us and it can be overwhelming. Thank you for keeping it real!

I've never seen that smutty look you showed on the bottom of the one tomato. New one on me. We get blight ever single year, so not sure if that's a different form of blight or something extra. (We get lots of extras. Most fruit boring insects. Traveling in from people who were growing late season corn, cucumbers etc. who harvest, which is a whole other headache, but not blight.) Mine ripen just fine with blight. In fact it's their second time of the year they have the chance to ripen, because it finally cooled off, and they all get busy doing just that.
