Wow what a kite. Big, beautiful ,hypnotic, and a superb flyer. It's like a glorious sentinel over the sea. I predict it will be a popular kite Thanks Jim for a great first viewing. Look forward to one day seeing it for real. Oh no ,another kite I now want!
What society is that, Glenn - the Society Of Crazy Kite-fliers (SOCK)?? I'm sure there will be a few eager buyers of this - it really is a great kite, and if it was cheaper I'd buy a couple more. Available in a selection of four colors, but I'm very happy with my choice.
Thanks for the video Jim. Added the Jellyfish to my collection last month. Love this kite!!! A crowd favorite and a solid lifter. Also handles our strong turbulent winds well.
A lot of pull in strong winds, of course, but it's a superb kite. Another version now being made by Weifang Kaixuan Kite factory is not as nice - it lacks the green "apron" with its short tentacles for one thing.
See what you've done!! lol... It is quite a show stopper... I on the other hand have only had one instance to fly my little bat. I noticed that it is out of balance...so the next windy day with have to be adjustments made. .. But I like him...when I had him up at the parking lot..I saw lots of smiles. And that was a good feeling..:)
Received my pink one in the mail yesterday, only took sixteen days.. I'm going to need my own field at the BKF (Berkeley Kite Festival) with the new JF and my pod of Trilobites ☺
I was just there today with my ITW dragons. I was thinking of getting a pink JF but I'm new to this community. I may just get a small trilobite. I'll also be looking for you at BKF
Stunning kite Jim and very well recorded, particularly with one hand! I had a look on-line at the supplier and there's 396 left - I predict there's gonna be a run on these, expensive or not. Thanks for posting.
@@JimNicholls my black octopus about the same size, it doesn’t seem to be too lively even on a stronger breeze day. Will keep you updated if it does what you said on a strong breeze. ;)
@@JimNicholls my Jellyfish just arrived looks like I don’t need my 500lbs line I think 100lbs line should be adequate for gentle breeze, it does have to hook up tow line like a regular kite, can’t wait til the weekend to fly it ;)
Ok Jim, just tried ordering this kite again. We'll see what I get. As you'll recall below and by my videos I originally received a different version. Will be fun to have both, if I get the right one! Haha
Good luck with that, Michael. Most of the others I've seen are not like mine, so maybe that style has been discontinued. The photos often don't reflect exactly what you are buying.
Chuffed you are the first to show off this new stunning kite Jim. The main body looks like a tadpole with a trilobite tail. If I'm honest Its a shame there are not more tentacles but I guess stability is more important. What size trilobite would you say this was equivalent to?
In terms of pull, it's probably like the 16. In body size maybe nearer the 10. But the tentacles are much longer, of course. Certainly it's more stable than the Trilobite or almost any other inflatable for that matter.
I really like this beautiful kite and would love to own it, however I feel for a full time caravan/motorhome person as myself, storage could be a problem.
Like all inflatables, this can be compressed down to a quite small size. People who fly the huge Peter Lynn kites usually use compression bags otherwise the kites would be too bulky for transport. This one is a lot smaller than some of those. I guess it depends how badly you want one!
It comes with a Chinese instruction, and even though normal kite gravity rules apply I am curious about the two tow point attachments. I use the lower point I see you use the upper attachment - any comments on these two points? An also it has two vents in the back of it's "head" that you can tie together - I assume you tie them together (close them) in light wind and keep them open in strong winds? or are there specific recommendations if you want to use the kite as a pilot kite and to hold and pull some laundry?
It's a long time since I last flew this kite. I can't remember if I've ever used the other tow point, but I guess the best way to find out what difference they make is just to try it. I think your assumption about tying the vents is correct, although I've never made use of that feature. I can't remember ever using this as a lifter (I can't remember a lot of things these days), but I think it would quite happily lift quite a bit, as it develops a lot of pull in anything over the lightest of breezes. I hope you have a lot of fun flying it.
@@JimNicholls Thank you for your answer! You are truly the absolute Godfather in the english speaking kite-community world wide! Thank you for everything you have participated with and still do! You keep lifting this hobby to new levels! Thank you 🙏🏻💪🏻🥇🏆
nice kite Jim. where is Brighton beach,? I only know in UK and USA. Also please show us how you get it down by using a pulley. I've ordered one, waiting for arrival but never used it before
Where I fly is New Brighton beach in Christchurch, New Zealand. I'll try to do something using the pulley, but it's fairly self-evident and you'll probably have no problem working it out.
Have to say, my Aliexpress order got here fast - 12 days. Looks like I received a good quality kite. NOT THIS VERISION, which they advertised, but it appears to be a decent none the less. More like Stefaan Pyckavet's kite. Will post sometime soon.
Jim Nicholls bought from City of Smiling Angels. Has the most orders - even people showing reviews of the same kite as yours. Excellent tracking. Received in 12 days. Not print, all sewn. The skirt inflates. Similar inflated and non inflated streamers. Appears to be fairly well made. Essentially looks just like the one from K-company in terms of style. Good price. Free shipping. Will see if I can fly it this weekend. Again, I couldn't get a kite this size for this price anywhere. Just buyer beware that it's not what's pictured.
That's where mine came from, Michael, so they must have changed the design subsequently. The video on the site is of my kite. I no longer deal with that seller, however, as she is very unreliable - sometimes good and sometimes impossibly bad. It sounds as if you got good service and a good product, just not what you thought you were getting. Not an unusual happening, sadly. I doubt if the kite was made there - the Chinese kite industry is a very tangled web.
Mine came with a bridle made out of what I believe is kevlar line. I'm looking to replace the bridle with braided polyester... any suggestions on what strength should be used?
It pulls hard, but of course the pull is never on just one line, so I'd guess that 150 - 200lb would be quite enough. I have some fairly light 300lb braided dacron which I've used on Trilobites and it works well, and would give more peace of mind.
Thanks, I was thinking of using 300lb dacron for the bridling too. BTW keep up the great work on your videos! I purchased my Jellyfish based on watching this video.
Jim, have you had much trouble with the long black tentacles twisting up? I see it a bit in parts of your video. I got one and only got to fly it one day in light wind and one of the tentacles twisted up into a rope and was a pain to undo. The other side would twist up but undo itself. Maybe with more wind it will be better. Very nice flying kite, the colors they sent me were not as expected so they refunded me a bit of the price.
I've not really had a problem with it, Nick. On mine, the two black tentacles are joined with a short strap about half way down, which may keep them under better control. There are at least two versions of this kite made in different factories, so I don't know if yours is exactly like mine. It pulls really hard in a strong wind, which is why I wasn't flying it later in the day.
Jim Nicholls, mine is just like yours other than the tentacle colors and has the tie in the middle. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Uq-KK5OStFM.html
Hello Jim. I just recieved my jellyfish today. Can you fly this one right out the bag? And there ar two briddel points for the main line, can you advice me in this. Many thanks. Joop.
No assembly needed, so yes you can fly it straight from the bag. You need probably 300lb line (might get away with less in a light breeze but it develops quite a pull when the wind increases.) The top tow point is designed for higher winds and the bottom one for lower winds if I remember rightly, but I usually attach the flying line to both of them and always get a good result. Have fun!
Not yet, but I'll try to get one soon. But I suggest you look at David Poole's video of the two together: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4p0y0aKoDtE.html
Hello Jim, the recommanded flying line for this kite seems to be a well kept secret !? No info whatsoever on the aliexpress.com website? What flying line do you use in this video? A breaking strength of 150 Kg/330 lbs would that be safe enough? Thanks !
Hi Daniel! If there were any information on an AliExpress site about flying line requirements, I'd probably be doubtful about it anyway. The line you mention should be fine in a light wind, but that thing can really pull, and if the breeze gets up I use 500lb just to be safe.
Why is that important? I've made over 1,300 videos and nobody's ever asked that before. I don't fly my kites very high usually, as there is a road and power cables nearby, where I usually fly. Most of my lines are 250 or 300 feet long, but I rarely use the full length.
When I purchased my jellyfish kite there was only one supplier, and the included flying line was a joke. It came on a plastic kids winder and I would guess it was no more than 50lb test. This kite will pull very hard in strong winds. For safety reasons you will want to buy some proper flying line separately... in which case you can choose your own length.
Hey Jim...I was wondering if you or anybody reading this have had any problems with the tentacles tangling up with each other when u fly????....My green Jelly seems to always tangle up when I decide to fly it. Any ideas on how to keep it from tangling??...
I've not had a problem with mine, Mike. No idea what would be causing that. I usually only fly mine in fairly light, steady winds. There are at least two different versions of this kite, so your green one may not be quite the same as mine.
Thanks for replying back Jim! I really appreciate it. I'm thinking maybe Ive got too much sand inside the tentacles or flying in strong winds. Im hoping to get it figured out soon. facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10211844561963532&set=g.445777642154789&type=1&theater&ifg=1
Yours is definitely not quite the same as mine, Mike. One difference is that on mine the longest (black) tentacles are joined by a short strap about halfway down, and that seems to keep them under better control. There are clearly other differences too, but I think that one might go some way to explaining and solving your problem.
@@JimNicholls Hey Jim..Its been a cpl years since ive flown my kite. This year I need to get it back in the sky. I noticed im missing the strap on the longest black tentacles and its the main reason that they tangle the wlhole kite. I have a question, Is this strap sewn on? also is it elastic? Im hoping I can attach or sew something on my kite to keep it from tangling. Thank you Jim for all your help. Mike P.
