That was a big hit! Glad you were able to walk away from it. Definitely take some time to recover. As a paramedic and life-long mountain biker, there are some really fundamental lessons from your clip: a/ the impact was substantial (you were knocked out instantly) - this needs hospital assessment to rule out further brain injury (bleeds, uncontrolled swelling etc.). These might not develop immediately, if at all, but if/when they do, you need to be near specialist help. b/ the snoring is the sound of your airway occluding - if that got worse to the point it stopped you breathing (and it can), are your friends able to recognise that and do something about it before you deteriorate? c/ your amnesia and repetitive conversation are signs of pretty significant concussion - this needs hospital assessment for the same reasons as above. d/ never continue riding or anything that puts you at risk of further head injury. Second-impact syndrome can quickly prove to be life-limiting or even fatal - and this can still be a risk weeks after the first event. Good luck with it! Not trying to be a killjoy, just that your video is perfect for highlighting the potential risks of ignoring head injuries.
I’m glad I walked away. Thanks for the advice. I felt like I had been in a car crash for a couple of days but that was 3 weeks ago now and all is well. We’re a tough bunch up north 🤣
I'm a rider and my hro came off similar to this vid. We had medical help but I didn't realize the seriousness of it. The second impact syndrome sounds scary and I think more people should be aware of that.
@@A_bit_better_than_average please take the above advice and get a scan on this. Weeks later yes but there is still the risk weeks later of the potential for bleeds etc. This really was a big hit. Glad to hear you're well!
@@johnbruce4030as already mentioned the snoring is a sign of a blocked airway, so put them in the recovery position to open the airways and call 999 immediately. However, breathing like this is also a sign of cardiac arrest, so if unconscious and none responsive call 999 and start CPR. Phone reception is often a problem when MTB’ing so given the money many of us spend on bikes and kit, £250 for a satellite phone may be the best £250 you ever spend in these situations.
Good on ya fella! Such a classic concussion asking the same thing over and over and forgetting more and more 😅 Recently retired medical here recovering from a big concussion 16 weeks ago (no memory of it at all) with smashed helmet, 8 fractured ribs, fractured collar bone, small haemopneumothorax and contused lung at BPW. And not my first rodeo. But to perk you up, I’m 67 and starting to get back on the sled 🎉 Cupla top tips to anybody visiting: the type of snoring was very worrying as the paramedic mentioned (need to have somebody nearby to sort that out for you next time!) and after a concussion like that, your brain is much easier to damage (MUCH EASIER) until some weeks after full recovery of even the minor symptoms (that means DO NOT hit the head under any circumstances during that time). I hope my story and determination to ride Dyfi again this year before Xmas puts my advice in perspective. Ride on!!!
@@kevinhart1667 I was hoping you wouldn’t ask that…. It was Kermit…. A green… I really want a gnarly story about Vanta, but I don’t have one 😂 I was with my daughter, but she was behind and didn’t see the carnage and I don’t use a cam. If I could remember anything about it, I guess I could spice it up a bit! I recon I was simply being a d***k and going too fast and carried on into a tree - my daughter found me underneath one by the track tangled up in my bike. Speaking of riding with somebody who knows what to do, she’s a EM type, but said by the time she arrived I’d moved onto that terrible groaning noise you made as well 😂😂😂
Any trails can catch you out buddy ...ive heard of people breaking bones on the blues up there ...i witnessed a woman with a snapped arm on the side of terrys belly
I can't belive your mate didn't realise or know about how bad concussion is and let you ride on!! Theres noway on this plant I'd let my mates ride back to the bottom.. even them lads starting middle section of fast track new how bad you was and they wasn't with you.. glad or ok tho... this is a perfect video for youngsters and people that dont know about concussion what to look out for then act on accordingly 👍
I was/am lucky. My friend did realise how bad it was at the time, as he did stop me riding the rest of the day as I was prepared to continue. It was my own inability to understand how bad it was and I made a decision to ride to fast to the bottom. He was struggling to stop me. But lucky I came to my senses with him saying we’re not continuing.
This is amazing. Thank you for uploading this video and sharing it. This shows how head injuries can be so serious and wearing a top notch helmet is so important in keeping yourself safe. I hope you’re recovering well and getting yourself back to feeling normal again 👊. Be carful out there everyone.
Mate, that shoring sends shivers down my spine. Hope the recovery was ok, we went and saw it when it opened and it’s so much bigger in person, would love to send it one day but I’m glad we didn’t rush to attempt it
I feel your pain,i crashed in may, front tyre blew on landing,i woke up in hospital with a broken collarbone,4 busted ribs and a brain bleed, helmet saved my life,i was airlifted as they put me on a trauma board, took 4 months to recover, and surprisingly,my new bike had no marks on it,now invested in body armour!
Wow 😮 you have been very very lucky. I had body armour on and my shoulders were scraped where they had been uncovered but everything else ok. The thumb on my right hand was a bit bruised internally for a couple of weeks. Just been back to dyfi this weekend and had an amazing time. Left out the bigger features for next time.
As a sport scientist who researches concussion in MTB, this is a good example of impact of concussion. Hope you are recovering well and got medical attention. Important not to rush back into riding and take it easy for a bit. Even a small crash can cause concussion (I crashed hard but not as hard as this at Stiniog and it took almost 8 months to recover fully). Also, I agree fully with the previous post, while it might be tempting to ride on second impact syndrome can cause catastrophic life changing symptoms and has a high mortality rate. Any further impact doesn't even have to be big to cause it. Take is easy for a while dude.
That drop is really difficult, you need a ton of speed but not too much because the landing is pretty short. You looked like you were shifting coming in, but even then your front wheel still hit the knuckle of the landing. Big respect for sending it & glad you are OK. No way I'm trying that anytime soon.
I 100% underestimated how much speed I would loose going up the ramp definitely. I was putting some speed in with the anticipation I would loose a bit, but I also underestimated the wind. I think if the wheel hadn’t gone sideways I would have had a really harsh flat landing and probably got away with some sore ankles. Next time I’ll go a bit more send, and I’ll be on the new Atherton AM170 🤟🏽
Classic post-concussion chat. Repeat, repeat, repeat. Nasty bro. I hope you saw a doctor afterwards because that was a biggy. Lay off required, I reckon. GWS bro.
wow! I feel you. I've been there. I hit my head on a tree stump at the bottom of a steep shoot and I only remember little snips of that day. It's mad what a head impact can do to you. Hope you got checked out and didn't have a 10 HOUR wait like I did (it was middle of Covid though).
They have a paramedic on duty at Dyfi to scrape people up and do initial assessments. They come to the location of the accident. As others have said, it was a big risk riding down the hill although it was a difficult situation and I understand why your mate didn't want to leave you.
I’m sat here pondering whether to go to my local dangerous ish trail whilst watching this and I’m shaking like a shitting dog! Hope you are ok my duck!
Yes dude, way to take a hit 🤜💥🤛 I ride there that drop is bigger than it looks on camera, looked like you come up a bit short, i blew my shock on it on 1 run doing the same
It’s definitely big 😂 I ran up to it a few times trying to gauge my speed. I really underestimated how much the wind would have an effect. I think if the crosswind didn’t take my wheel sideways I would have just had a really harsh landing and probably had some sore ankles. But I definitely needed a bit more speed.. If your gonna be dumb, you gotta be tough 🤣
@A_bit_better_than_average man after my own heart, I've taken some good uns in the past to the extend of 2 pins in my wrist lol, just got carry on doing what u love, in me 40's now n still do these stupid things 😂 hav done since I was 12, adrenaline is addictive, luv'd ur mate aswell "u wer fucking sparko mate" cruel but had me in stitches, 1st vid that's came up so new sub aswell 👍🤙

Mother in law has dementia so I feel what better cause 👍🏼
@A_bit_better_than_average that's mad I made it a mission to do a backflip before I was 40 aswell, I'm terrible, ride with a few youngsters and they always trash talk n call me old so always go all out to beat them 😂 they hate it lol, that's a great cause to raise money for, close to my heart to, will look out for ur donation page, I always fancied that until I saw jono Jones n deaks throwing up n thought, there definitely fitter than me soo no lol
