Most of these comments are steeped in ignorance! Komodo Dragons will chase its prey for hours or days! They move at a leisurely pace and then sprint when they are in range! Remember, their goal is to land a single bite then they will continue to follow you until your eventual demise at which point they will consume you! Keep in mind, they can weigh up to 300lbs and eat up to 80% of their body weight at one sitting (flesh,bone,hair and sinew). If you were on a pier with a crocodile that was intent on slowly following you, would you be nervous? Well, that dragon is way more dangerous on land and sprints almost as fast!

fortunately, the guy with the stick is a guide, and those people are lucky he's there or they'd be in big trouble. I've been to that island a couple times, and all the guides carry those big long sticks. That's their usual speed most of the time. There's probably a tourist boat on the other side of the dock.
