You know that paddlefish eat by filtering out zooplankton from the water, but have you ever seen them do it? Watch the video, then check out North American Fisherman's Facebook page for more cool videos, photos, etc. The link is FishingClub

I feel like this was originally a salt water fish and then when the waters decended, they got stuck and eventually converted over to fresh water. There are also fresh water sea horses that converted as well

It's a shame that people like caviar so much. Wisconsin doesn't have many of these anymore. And like every state, we got zebra mussels just taken over every river and creek.

They're not extinct, they are still stable populations in some states, but in eastern states, they are extirpated. They are reintroducing them in Pennsylvania. The Chinese Paddlefish is almost extinct or is I believe.
@leviwooten3795
@leviwooten3795 2 года назад
They have ALWAYS been in Pennsylvania they merely changed the laws to STOP fisherman from targeting them. I have a buddy who got charged with a huge fine for handling one for a video. All he did was take a video holding the fish bam. 10,000$ fine. Loss of license for 5 years and until the fines paid off. They don't play around. Where I live in Pennsylvania we're right below Seneca NY which stocks paddlefish and they migrate down to the Allegheny reservoir and out dam acts as a sanctuary for these paddle fish as it's 100 feet deep super clear super clean water perfect for paddlefish. Plenty of food and my buddy's arena full size 6 foot several hundred pound paddlefish swimming around the river. Our rivers so healthy hellbenders have zero problem staying alive and growing up to 2 feet long. I've seen two paddlefish one of them was about 5 feet long if I had to guess atleast 100 pounds washed up ashore dead after a big increase in water flow from the dam.

They are primitive Chondrostean ray-finned fish, that are closely related to sharks. They need shallow sandy and rocky bottom pools to spawn in. But dam construction has stopped their migrations and raised the water level, so they cannot reach their spawning grounds, and high water levels has destroyed their spawning grounds. So dam construction has not benefitted fish of any kind.
@piitii8141
@piitii8141 2 года назад
chondrostean fish aren't necessarily 'closer' to sharks, the similar traits are convergent evolution. they are still actinopterygii (boney fish), even though their skeletons have become cartilage over millions of years.
@ryhe2249

they are not closely related to sharks, but are closely related to sturgeon.
