PWF's Brandon spent some time on Grand Lake in Oklahoma snagging spoonbill with his buddy Zach and Spoonbill Fishing expert dad, Randy. The guys caught some giant prehistoric paddlefish using heavy duty rods and reels with dipsy divers. Randy breaks down the specific techniques required to catch these oklahoma giants.

Awesome job brothers!! Snagging is great fun, was out there end of last year with my 5 year old brother in a guided trip that he won for free. I just gotta day the weather was amazing, glassy water, barely any wind and the sun was out. The spookiest were scattered so it was hard to find but not even 5 minutes after putting hooks in the water he had landed an easy 50-60+ pounder by himself. He was so stoked the rest of the trip and still talks about it to this day. Rusty Pritchard was an amazing guide and I’d definently recommend him for any guided trips out there!!

Awesome!! Always love to hear stories of young kids getting hooked on fishing. I have 3 young kids of my own and so ready for the days when we can share memories on the water. Glad you had a good trip and thanks for the support. See ya on the water!

I've snagged some on the Red River in Louisiana at the Lock and Dams but you have to catch and release them here used to be $2700 fine per fish if caught with one or if you keep it out of the water too long. Think the fine has gone down some few years ago but it's still over $1000 per fish.

It’s a lot of fun! Best time out of a boat is in the winter. I think in the fall they get up in the creeks and you can snag them from the bank. Don’t know a lot about them though. Good luck

Just a tip try not to toss tham into the water and instead hold them in the water until they kick off so they can get they're energy back👍👍👍

Just a heads up: use a sling to weigh the fish. Its a lot easier and you dont rip a hole in the fishes mouth. I snag in oklahoma every year for these dinosaurs...have a little more respect! All you have to do is tie a rope around the tail and the bill, pretty simple. Its one thing to cut a hole on a fish that you keep...but this fish was released...try the sling...youll sleep better knowing you didnt slice and dice!

I never get why people prefer to pull with their left arm, reel with their right--even when they are right handed. They make "left hand" conventional reels, believe me, it must easier.

You can’t keep them. Everything is within the rules. When you pull a large hook into the side of a fish, it is going to bleed.

We follow all the proper regulations when we fish. Immediate release of spoonbill is required. More info: www.tulsaworld.com/sportsextra/outdoors/kelly-bostian-paddlefish-mortality-in-catch-and-release-program-is-researched/article_3147b7fa-8b0d-567a-8bec-8c8291fc1e93.html

I’m so confused with the ethics part of this type of fishing. The goal is to literally pull a giant hook into the side of a fish and pull them into the boat. I had a much harder time accepting that fact than worrying about if I was holding them correctly

I guess because I'm Canadian we do not hook our fish.....we fish the humane way
@PrestigeWorldwideFishing
@PrestigeWorldwideFishing 4 года назад
Yeah I agree it isn’t the most humane, but we follow all the proper regulations when fishing for spoonbill. The barbless hook helps not harm them as much. If it wasn’t for them rolling and getting into the line, they would come off very easy because the hook would just fall out
@liamm2321

@@PrestigeWorldwideFishing i love how you know that ethically this is wrong but you use regulations to justify it

@@liamm2321 then tries to blame the fish for “rolling and getting into line” lmao. Just because you’re “fOlLoWiNg ReGuLaTiOnS” doesn’t mean you’re doing it right… I couldn’t even feel accomplished landing these if they were snagged like that. I’ve never seen fish handled so poorly by men your age, especially at that size and species of fish. Disappointing.

That is how you catch them. They are going to bleed because you are dragging a hook into them. Hooks are barbless so fall out very easily but does result in blood. Promise no fish was dead or dying

Yes it is a little strange. They are filter feeders so they don’t eat anything but microscopic plankton floating through the water. They are primarily caught in Oklahoma for their eggs which are used to make caviar.
