Jhuma Limbu is a distinguished Nepali folk musician and music researcher acclaimed for her extensive exploration of various Nepali folk music genres and instruments. Her illustrious career includes the release of numerous albums, notably featuring an audio rendition of Mundhum, the revered Limbu religious scripture. Limbu's musical journey was profoundly influenced by her mentor, Amber Gurung, a pivotal figure in Nepali music history, renowned for composing the national anthem of Nepal.
Hailing from Dhungesaghu VDC in Taplejung district, Eastern Nepal, Limbu's passion for music blossomed early through her involvement in the traditional Limbu custom of Dhan Nach, where she passionately sang the Palam song. After completing her SLC education in 2001, she relocated to Kathmandu, eventually finding her musical home at Lalit Kala Campus following a brief stint at Ratna Rajya Laxmi Campus.
Under the guidance of classical musician Chandan Kumar Shrestha, Limbu unveiled her debut album, "Eh Saila," before embarking on a transformative journey under Amber Gurung's mentorship. Her subsequent album, "Amber Sangeet," paid homage to Gurung, with almost all compositions crafted by him. Notably, her collaboration with Kishor Gurung produced a remarkable musical endeavor deeply rooted in Limbu culture.
In 2014, Limbu's commitment to preserving Nepali folk music manifested in the release of "Khaasaam," featuring solo and ensemble performances inspired by Limbu heritage. A passionate advocate for indigenous musical traditions, Limbu's invaluable contributions have earned accolades, including recognition from esteemed organizations like Yakhung Yuwa Manch, Lalitpur.
In addition to her musical pursuits, Limbu ventured into film music, co-composing the score for the 2022 Nepali film "Jaar" alongside Ganga Thapa. Directed by Phurba Tshering Lama, the film starred Anoop Bikram Shahi, Geetanjali Thapa, and Saugat Malla, further affirming Limbu's multifaceted talent and enduring influence on Nepali music and culture.
Jhuma Limbu heads Raithane Music, a collective comprising musicians, vocalists, journalists, and scholars. Formed amidst the exploration and dissemination of Nepali folk music, this group, Raithane, was established primarily to oversee the management of folk music. Its scope of management encompasses journalistic endeavors, research initiatives, and publication efforts, aimed at preserving and promoting the rich heritage of Nepali folk music. She also orchestrates Tribal Haat, a musical platform that showcases authentic folk performances from various regions across the country.
