Huge Problem With The Humvee... 

Hey Matt, your glow plug controller is popped, I can’t tell you how many I changed while in the service as a Diesel mechanic. The controller was notorious for popping in cold weather if you don’t cycle the glow plugs three or four times before starting and If you just get in and cycle than once and try to start it, the controller pops and you get the quick flash of the Wait light. If you can find another controller, and once it's installed let it sit for about an hour to become the same temperature as the engine other wise you'll pop it again. The controller is located on water crossover pipe on the top front of the engine by the air intake tube, the part with plastic cap and all the wires going to it. also you might want to get a new ignition switch it looks like its got a lot of slop in the movement, and making contact to turn the motor over when the glow plug cycle is happening. if you get a new switch make sure it is rated for 24 VOLTS.

I was an all wheel vehicle mechanic in the Army for 10 years and repaired them as a civilian. I'm also in Texas. If you ever need help with your vehicle, I know every single nut and bolt.

Hey Matt From what I've seen, there are thousands of subscribers to whom you have done something great, made them fall asleep with a smile on their lips, motivated them to work out or made them think about the world, and see it in a different way. I can't speak for everyone, but you have done all these things and more for me. Also, the things you say every now and then, you know, just telling people that life is long, even though it feels as it moves by quickly. It matters more than you might think. I don't know if you'll get to see this comment, but you should know that to a moody teenager, hearing a person who seems grown-up and mature say that matters more than I'd like to admit.

Matt, check the ignition switch. Seems like the connection within the switch is not making contact properly to the relay that powers the controller to the glow plugs. That and it's shorting across leads when you move the key to "start".

Mere's diobolic chuckle when you said the Humvee wouldn't start... You need to be putting some Diesel Kleen with every tank to prevent gelling.

Do not listen to the guys telling you starting fluid....nope don't do it.... Itlookslike your switch is bad another thing put diesel stabilizer in that thing so your diesel fuel don't gel up if that happens your pooched

That key looks cheap as hell and was added.... those humvees didn't come with keys, just a heavy duty switch. It looks like that key couldn't handle the voltage and fried. I'd replace the ignition switch and add a starter button with a relay.

The problem with not being able to start is more than likely with the flux capacitor. The cold temperature probably caused the headlight fluid to freeze therefore no connection with the Wi-fi and preventing the electronic solenoids from coming online and not allowing for the pentagon to permit a normal cold weather start.

As a mechanic.. i have to be very serious with you.... If your vehicle refuses to work or start, you must use percussive maintenance ... Aka, smack the absolute fuck out of it Remember, violence solves ALL problems, and if that doesn't work, you simply aren't using enough of it 😂

Hi Matt. I played the part of an HMMWV mechanic for several years. You are absolutely right in replacing the switch. It seems that the contacts that close your glow plug relay aren't staying made. If that isn't the problem, then the ECM may be the issue. Pray it's the switch.

Since the glow plug light is turning off right away and it cranks then the ignition switch is probably bad. The glow plug controller or igniter could possibly be shorting out to and that's causing the light to shut off and crank. Just a couple thoughts.

You did not PMCS your HUMVEE on Monday and that is why it is broken!

Cool thing about having a Humvee is that you can download all the manuals for free fairly easy on Google. Your TM(Technical Manual) for that Humvee will start with 9-2320-280 and the last numbers will differentiate what type of manual it is. You can look up checks, services, troubleshooting, parts, repair info and everything step by step. www.imfmotorpool.com/HMMWV_M998_Manuals.html that is a good source to find what TM you need. Most likely it is either the aftermarket switch, the glow plug controller or control box. The latter two are normally replaced in pairs. Should be easy to troubleshoot.

The V has a wire issue on the ignition switch. No big deal. The sound you heard is probably a short. It is an easy fix but I'm not familiar how easy it is to access the back of the switch.Good luck my friend.

You have a different ignition switch to what we have in the military, we don't use keys but i guess you hmmwv was converted for civilian use. But, I would check the protective control box(PCB) located under the dash or the glow plug controller in the engine bay. Either might be bad or both and are known to go bad quite frequently. Too bad you don't have another truck to swap the parts with to troubleshoot your problem. And also your ignition switch looks like its malfunctioning too. What model hmmwv do you have? If its a 1097, -34 manuals are found all over the internet to help you troubleshoot.

4 lbs of c4 can fix any m998a1, those things are junk - cold starts are better with a chock block over the exhaust for back pressure and a new ignition switch might help, ditch the key units and get a normal mil spec paddle ignition- just carry a flat head screw driver- and a lock for the steering to lock it while away

We usually ended up bypassing the glow plug control board on the M998 with a momentary switch to the solenoid, and if you want a key switch for starting, get a off/on key switch, then add a push button(momentary) for start.

I feel you Matt. Here in New Mexico it's 20 degrees and we're miserable lol give me 115 degrees any day over this

Technically, diesels don't have an ignition system. Old 6.2 diesels were notorious for failed glow plug controllers and fuel pumps. You should put a Duramax in it. Double the horsepower and more reliable.
