HUGE SEA TURTLE RESCUE! (Green Sea Turtle entangled in fishing line) 

he absolutely didn't understand what you were trying to do, he was probably just tired and/or confused why he was let go and you weren't trying to pursue him again. Sea turtles don't tend to flee from predators after a while, in fact they stick close until the predator gives up, at least that's what they do with tiger sharks. They'll try to angle themselves so the flat of their back is facing the shark's mouth, preventing it from getting a grip on their shell

This makes you wonder if there will be any sea life left in fifty years. Or if all the oceans will have swimming around will be plastic and whatever other garbage mankind can fill the oceans with. Thanks to these concerned, caring, and brave young men, this turtle now has a second chance. But for how much longer? 😭

he didn't realize that at all. Almost no animal species on earth is capable of that kind of reasoning. it's more likely that the turtle was either tired, or confused and choosing to conserve energy in case it needed to struggle more

Thank you very much. Yeah, this was the largest turtle we've ever untangled. A boat would definitely be ideal, but we're just hobby spearfisherman. Luckily we were able to make it work.

I've been keeping most of the fishing line I find and giving it to my mom to show to her students at the school she teaches at.

After we freed the turtle my friend was cracking up about how it looked when I grabbed the turtle. I'm just glad he didn't have his gopro that day.

We don't go out diving to save marine life, we go out to catch fish for our families. If we see an animal in distress, we do what we can with what we have. Once again, we are SPEARFISHERMAN not MARINE RESCUE.

I appreciate the input but there are some things you need to be aware of. We are not animal rescue people, we are spearfishermen so we are equipped for spearfishing(hence only having a knife to cut with). Unfortunately we were not close to an easily accessible shoreline where we could safely get out of the water. Nearest beach to safely land at was over half a mile away. And swimming with such a large turtle is too much of a hassle (meaning extending our interaction with the turtle to be well over 45-60 minutes instead of the 3 minutes seen here). We were also diving with 7ft kayaks (rated for 300lbs) because we can't afford a boat, so we have no way getting that turtle out of the water. Too many times people show up too late to help a turtle, the turtle either dies or loses a flipper. It's either you help in that moment or you let it die and I am not one to let protected animals die from human's pollution if I have the opportunity to help.

Thank you for your input but there are some things that you need to be aware of. Nearest accessible beach was half a mile(1.2km) away and dragging a 250lb (113kg:weight is a guess because of its size) turtle that far is dangerous for both the turtle and us. Our kayaks are rated for 300lbs so paddling it wasn't an option either. Also, you want to keep interactions with protected species as short as possible. It would've been at least a 45 minute interaction instead of the 3 minutes you see here. Also green sea turtles can hold their breath anywhere between 5 minutes to a couple hours depending on activity. And there was no hook. The turtle balled up a bunch of line in it's mouth and we were able to remove it all. If taking the animal to shore was a viable option, we would've done that, but it wasn't. So we decided to cut the line while in the water.

We are over half a mile from the nearest safe accessible beach. The shoreline we are in front of is all rocks and sharp limestone. If we swam it to the nearest safe beach, it would extend our interaction to 45 minutes instead of just 3. If it was feasible to take it to shore, we would have.

@@nejanpan1261 that swelling on the neck is actually tumors that form on older turtles here in Hawaii. It is not an infection, nor is it gas. I first spotted the turtle in 30ft then it swam out to an area 80ft deep, then swam back to the 30ft deep area which is where I started recording this video.
