So no one is worried about the 9yr old drinking pop but everyone is freaking out about a toddler wanting his pacifier? Hey, I'm not judging EITHER - my kids have pop sometimes and one of my three kids had her paci until she was three (though, admittedly, not in public - but I didn't institute that rule on the fly in the middle of a restaurant full of people!). It's just interesting to see people getting nasty about a TODDLER. A toddler who is having his one real source of comfort removed with no prior warning in the middle of a crowded restaurant. Of course he's going to go off...we all saw that coming.

I can't imagine someone seeing one of my kids at their worst and then commenting that I should not have had them!!!! The mother allowed the paci and the behaviors - her parenting techniques needed to be modified. Her TODDLER was not to blame. Jeez.

I think Super Nanny knew exactly what she was doing. The whole trip to the Restaurant was to make the mother face what she had created. The pacifier was the best tool to use for this lesson as he supposedly only used it at bedtime. So why is he using it at lunch? Maybe mom gave it to him thinking it would "pacify" him and he would behave. That was a lesson for mom way more than for the child.

This is all part in parcel of being a child and learning. You cannot learn to swim without actually getting in the water. It’s the same for dining out. You will only learn how to conduct yourself in a certain situation if you actually get to experience being in that situation.

Not easy at all and the tantrums are so embarrassing but I just have to get on with it until he learns to listen. Some days are good other days not so but I'm learning each day. It will get easier...my son is 3 yrs old and even stopped using the toilet or potty. Makes me so cross but perseverance and different techniques well win over in the end!! Greatful and thankful for my blessings!

You can't let a child have control. This Mom just let the toddler take control, and it wasn't fair on her, on her other children, or on the diners. In my favorite restaurant there was a kid screaming at the top of his lungs and everyone was staring at her and when she caught my gaze she went “I’m so sorry” and I told her “Your kid doesn’t belong in public!” She covered her face in her hands and started sobbing. Her husband looked like he was going to get up and say something but I grabbed my drink and he sat back down. Told him “That’s what I thought.” (I was too sober to be dealing with that) The manager told them to leave and when they made them way to the door everyone in the restaurant started clapping.

I agree. I grew up in the 80s and me and my brother never behaved like this. My parents were very loving but strict. We had a healthy fear of getting in trouble. Apparently the worst we would do is get a bit restless and ask if we could sit on their laps once they had finished eating.

I like Jo most of the time, I happen to be close to 60 and have more experience with children, even autistic children whom I speak sign language to since they can't speak most of the time. I get them to do LOTS of things without yelling or being aggressive, and I've had autistic children hit me MANY times.

This little boy is 2... not autistic.. he has been let to control everyone his entire life. He screams he gets whatever he wants, scream louder get it faster.... the cycle HAS to be stopped! Jo was trying to get the mom to understand its not going to go away with age, he will just be a bigger monster running the entire house! He might be 2, but he UNDERSTOOD EVERY word Jo said to him!! Seriously don't like it when adults use the excuse they're only 2 they don't understand.. Toddlers aren't stupid they are extremely smart their brains hold information like a sponge. You teach them early or deal with the consequences!! As for me my 1yr old 2yr old 3, 4, 5, 6, 7... ect will NEVER be the boss, and I will be able to go to restaurants, ride on planes, sit in church, go to a store, without dealing with crap like that!! No way!!

The first thing a new therapist is taught in the field of behavior is ***mean what you say and say what you mean***. We’re taught to NEVER give empty promises or make empty threats. Kids catch on to that real quick and will play you like a fiddle😂😂

Time outs and discipline start at around two years of age...before that you redirect their attention and trick them. Anyone who's disciplining their kids before two is not realizing they don't have a firm grasp on cause and effect, repercussions, etc at that age.

I was thinking this...I used to think this show was the gospel but now that I have a baby all I can think is why would you let him bring it, grab his little comfort IN THE MIDDLE of a public place and expect him to be calm?? And not even say something like "I know you want the Paci, this must be tough for you etc..." And it absolutely broke my heart that they threw it away in front of him...once his emotions are exploding how on earth do you expect him to calm himself down if you don't show him how??? No longer a die-hard fan of her methods...

Good point. If they didn’t want the kid to have it they should have left it at home. That said I think Jo wanted to put Mum in that situation to prove to her that she could do it. It’s a tough lesson but I think that the Mum grew in confidence because of it.

The mom had told Jo that the pacifier was only for sleeping, yet he had it in his mouth. I think it HAD to happen the way it did for mom to get her sh*t together. This wasn't a lesson for Gabe, it was a lesson for mom.

He is too old for nappies too and if people want quiet dining, they should eat at home. If you eat out you must be prepared that something like this can happen. It was just kid crying, trying to make his point, nothing like a stinky dirty person at the table. The mom just needed this experience and so did the boy, nobody got hurt.

@@BJKage I agree he's too old for nappies. I very much disagree that when people eat out they should be prepared to be exposed to behavior like that. That was not a "crying" child. That was a screaming, badly spoiled child having a major tantrum to get his way, and it was loud and prolonged. Restaurant customers should not be expected to put up having their eardrums blown out and their meals disrupted. If Junior is known to act that way, then he should stay home with a sitter. Hopefully Jo's laying down the law will be a step in the right direction.

I am not a perfect parent and my toddler is now 14. I feel for the mom too.
