I went searching for OH 6 stuff and you popped up. I've got this kit on the shelf in a box. Nice video and nice build. I'm a drafted, disabled, and 1968 Republic of Vietnam combat veteran. I was a crew chief on the OH 6A helicopter. I trained from Nov 6, 1967 to the mid February of 1968 on Bell UH-1 helicopters and was given an E-4 Specialist promotion in rank. We were asked if we wanted to volunteer for OH 6 training after UH school. Many of us took the offer and went out to the airfield and was given a ride in the OH 6. We trained until about mid March of 1968 on the OH. We were promoted to Specialist E-5. Then we were put on kitchen police (KP) duty while waiting for the Army to decide our fate. This all happened at Fort Eustis, Virginia. I had started my basic training at Fort Knox on August 24, 1967. We had been transported by train from Fort Knox to Fort Eustis. I came from a 1400 acre family farm in Michigan near Flint. I arrived in Vietnam about May 6, 1968. The first place I was sent was the 765th Maintenance Battalion and they were working on an OH 6 and they didn't have any manuals. They were trying to get the transmission out through the top. Wrong! I showed them how to bring it down through the passenger compartment. I was the put on a civilian aircraft carrier putting rotors on Cobra gunships for 2 weeks off the coast of Vung Tau. The 1st aviation brigade was looking for me. They were ticked off with the unit for stealing me. My first mission I was on was shooting up a bombed out a Cong base out in the jungle swamp. These Cong had board walks out above the swamp. We shot up generators and all kinds of equipment. The mini-gun would turn the helicopter. I shot a hole in the skid while turning a loaded minigun during my test of the gun. The skids squat down and so when the helicopter picks up, the skids move in giving the gun room to shoot without hitting the skid. The mini-gun did have these expensive gun sights. We discarded these sights because they were worthless. All the pilot had to do was aim the helicopter and the button on the cyclic stick would move the gun up and down. We did not have any paint on the top of the rotors untill probably the fall of 1968. We then painted a required white stripe about midway the rotor. If you look at pictures ir videos, you might see the white stripe paint. These helicopters were the best because they had push pull rods and no hydraulic system. There was a small but separate hydraulic type support at each skid. The Allison turbo engine was weak. Loaded, we had to skid down the runway to take off. Too hot for good lift. We ran out of JP-4 gas in Indian country. The Australians rescued us using a UH-1. If one lined the foot pedals up at a certain point and throw smoke grenades, it would hit the mark. The worse part of Vietnam was the smell, the fortnight I spent in a field hospital, and the rocket and mortar attacks.

Very cool build. One of the first kits I built was a Hewy. That was in the late ‘60s during the Viet Nam war. Got out of the hobby when I was a teenager. Got back in at the start of the pandemic. Thanks for sharing. Happy days and model on! 😎🇨🇦

Thank you very much. My first Huey was in the 70's and these were the first Huey's I've built since them. I think the pandemic brought a lot of folks back to the hobby. Have a great day.

I don't build military models. And this is the first time I actually spent the time to see one being built. Your production was quit enjoyable to watch. Thanks.
