I've heard good things about dump valves from The old man Bill on SRC channel on RU-vid his son Billy drives a twin turbo Chevy s10 sbc 400 and let me tell you they got their stuff together doing all that No Prep Racing...💯🇺🇸45

What I am getting from this is it's a way to get variable stall out of a fixed converter. I know about a decade ago guys were trying it with factory th350 parts but I don't think it went really far. I really like the idea of using a set screw as a bleed jet. That lets the end user tune how much fluid bypasses the converter feed.

Would it be possible to use a dump valve on a 4x4 where you would have a difference in use between rock crawling and sand dunes?

Can you essentially use the dump valve as 12v clutch to make converter flash for a fraction too build boost on a tight converter?

How about mounting a variable flow valve on a clutch pedal, for a streeter?

In theory if I would want to foot brake a trans to higher rpm, without a brake, I could use a dump valve as well?

Great info! I wonder if a variable volume flow control could be used on the return orifice line instead of a drilled jet?! That way it could also be tuned for various conditions on the fly so to speak.

The dump valve can be pulse width modulated at 10hz if desired for variable control.

You are thinking motorized [stepper motor] needle valves? Most automation world stuff is hinged off 24v supply power, but input to such valves is often 0-10V. So... you could maybe make your own controller: voltage divider to trim down 13v, use a 9.8 zener diode inside same to manage minor voltage fluctuations/stabilize output and use a trim pot [aka volume knob control] to set output. That's the analog version... where to datalog it, one asks? Depends on software + interface - an auxiliary channel that is 0-14V capable on its input should be capable.

@HughesPerformance

@blockequals4 we do not currently offer a dump valve system for the 4L80E. Our TH400 system will not fit the 4L80E. Sorry about that!!

Depends on your setup. If you run a transbrake, you should run a dump valve. If you don't run a transbrake, you should run a transbrake.

Interesting stuff...I was wondering if the cavitation in the converter has any adverse effects.?
@HughesPerformance
@HughesPerformance 4 года назад
Great question! The answer is yes. Any time cavitation occurs in a torque converter, the fluid temperature increases dramatically, and the fluid will also have a greater possibility of foaming. This is why it is absolutely critical to have a proper designed and functioning transmission cooling system whenever using a transbrake, high stall torque converter, and dump valve, and is also why it's absolutely critical to use an extremely high quality fluid in this type of application. If the combination is not set up & tuned properly then it's entirely possible to overheat the torque converter and transmission to the point of damaging and/or breaking components when using a dump valve. That being said, with a properly matched & tuned combination there is no reason for dump valve use to compromise the long-term reliability or durability of any components. As far as heat management is concerned, again, with a properly matched & tuned combo any increase in temperature while staging should come right back down as the vehicle progresses down the race track. One other note of importance; a dump valve should only be used with a torque converter featuring a steel stator or a billet aluminum stator, and even then we really prefer to only use them with a steel stator. Converters equipped with a cast aluminum stator should *not* use a dump valve system. Cast aluminum stators are extremely durable when used in the appropriate combination, but will not provide acceptable longevity when used with a dump valve system.

Yes.. cavitation is absolute murder on your fluid.. But no worries.. We have an incredible solution coming for all of these issues and more. Stay tuned over the winter as we finalize our designs with real world testing in several of our customer's race cars. ranging from 700hp to 1800 hp. This will obsolete most of this video and the issues mentioned.

So... Let's say I have a well-built powerglide in my N.A. 98 S-10 with a 500HP SBC 383 and I wire a momentary switch to my gear selector that tells my dump valve to recirculate for 0.25 seconds (hypothetically) at the shift. Is that how I could achieve staying in RPM between shifts?
@fascistpedant758
@fascistpedant758 4 года назад
Very interesting! What is the fluid flow rate into the converter and how long does it take to deplete or replenish the converter? Does this affect the torque ratio or just increase slip?
@HughesPerformance
@HughesPerformance 4 года назад
Depleting & replenishing of fluid in the converter during dump valve operation all happens in hundreths of a second. We do not currently have GPM data on fluid flow rates, but that is certainly a data point we can look at adding. As far as how dump valves affect torque multiplication goes, you will normally experience a drop in torque multiplication within the torque converter any time the dump valve is active. Any loss of fluid charge will result in less available fluid to accelerate through the stator and create additional drive force against the inner impeller vanes.

Can u install this on a ATI powerglide since its not your trans? And how do u monitor this if u run a carb with nitrous?
@jasonritter2492
@jasonritter2492 3 года назад
Anyone who builds trans can put this in for you. I run a Max Duty ATI 400 good to 3500 hp with ATI bolt together converter. ATI sponsors me and I had a last min deal where I wouldn't of had my trans back in time if I sent it to ATI so ATI sent my rebuilt parts to MR Wendell trans in Texas and no issues. I am a IRD carb with a procharger and I street and no prep track racer and this setup is pretty awesome.

@JackWEC4653
@JackWEC4653 2 года назад
If I remember correctly, there is an issue that E40D suffers with where the ground on the trans is bad and it manages to ground through the valves in the valve body, which can cause them to jam.

If there is bare metal (no paint or powdercoating) on the mounting surface of the bellhousing and the block, it should be good.
@MrSwimmster
@MrSwimmster Год назад
@@jimandskittum Yeah, but it's not.. We've always warned against it.. it causes too many problems. ESPECIALLY with electronic trans.. You can ground to a bell housing bolt as that is a direct connection to the engine block. But if it's an aluminum block, it's wise to ground elsewhere.
