I watched the thumbnail of the video in the bar of recommended videos for me and I said to myself that such image must contain great music, I'm happy to confirm that I wasn't wrong.

A person could do much worse than to devote their free time to great symphonies of the past that remain unacknowledged by those in charge of our musical tastes.

There are none in charge of our musical tastes, and artists certainly don't require their acknowledgement.

Yes, that secretive cabal of tastemakers spanning centuries of European music history. What a naive way of looking at the world.
@richardharrold9736

@@regpharvey well, who decides concert programmes? A lot of music gets flogged to death while a lot else of equal quality is unjustly neglected. If I ever hear the Rachmaninoff Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini again, it will be too soon, but there are works and indeed composers that are rarely if ever heard.

Hugo Alfven is known mainly for his first swedish rhapsody was able to write several great, severe and beautiful symphonies like this one. This composer should be better known.

What I notice about many of these forgotten symphonies is that they start slow... but this is different.

Amazingly enough, our local classical music station (KUSC-FM) finally got around to playing this work last night. A much better piece of work (in my humble opinion) then the usual warhouse associted with this composer

I agree. It's always unfortunate when a composer's best known work isn't representative of the quality of his overall output. Ravel and Saint-Saens came to hate Bolero and the Carnival of the Animals respectively for just that reason.
@amvalkyrie6496
@amvalkyrie6496 6 месяцев назад
@@davebarclay4429 While that is the case with many composers, Saint-Saens is not one of them as the Carnival's first public performance was posthumously. Therefore it only became famous after his death

This theme somehow reminded me of the one of the 1917 (movie) themes, I don't know if it's 1917 main one or not but if you have heard 1917 one it's pretty obvious to find a commonality with some parts of the first movement here.... Nonetheless very great piece of music.
