I love how Melies starts speaking so hesitantly, as he's been so removed from speaking to others for so long and has forgotten how to do it, but as soon as he begins the speech about mermaids and wizards, the years fall away and he's that young dreamer again.

This is where George's heart truly lies, not as a grumpy toy merchant in a crowded train station. But its also a pity because he finally recovered his passion 7 years before his death

Pick up Peter Bogdanovich's Who The Devil Made It, a collection of director interviews. Every single one of them is amazing. Especially the guys you kinda don't know... It's a real treasure. I really mean this. Von Sternberg was a bit tight lipped, but you can always read his great Fun In A Chinese Laundry autobio.....

"Come and Dream with me." I saw this in 4th grade. It got me fascinated with clockworks. My teachers had shown it to the rest of my class. Those were the days when things weren't so serious. As children, we had nothing to lose. That's why the grown-ups were so sad. They're all children who had lost themselves. As I look back at my era, with one more decade of youth approaching (by current standards). I do wish to go back. When people weren't so angry. When the internet was more free. When there were wonders to behold. I know that many are returning. We all are. We have to. It's in our blood. Have you ever noticed that an oscillating spring is always gently jerked back? With the climax of its force at the maxima and minima? If you understand that. You understand not only this year, but the ages. See you on the other side. It will all be okay. I promise you. But only if you believe...

Georges Méliès is the giant all other films makers stand upon, without him pioneering the art of special effects, the very art of film making would have been seen as a novelty little slices of life but nothing more, he put heart and story telling into his films. He's the reason we still sit there and wonder while we watch movies.

@whoami7721
@whoami7721 6 лет назад
Totally agree. This movie has aged better than Avatar imo but didn't even get half the box-office or publicity that one did. Besides, I just think Scorsese has a better and more consistent filmography than Jim Cameron. Goodfellas (my personal all-time favorite)and Last Temptation of Christ are so much more weighty and have better performances than say, Titanic. This is the most effects-laden film Marty ever did but just the acting alone hits me. Asa Butterfield tearing up gets me every time.
