Hugo is a minigame compilation for the PlayStation released in 1998 by ITE Media. I've had it since I was a kid but never got around to actually finishing it, so after all this time, was the ending worth the wait and does the game hold up today?

Now the logic: Lumberjack: If you stand too long in the same log, it sinks in the original version. I don't know about the rolling however, maybe Hugo loses his balance if he stands too long
@PixelPursuit
@PixelPursuit 7 лет назад
Interesting, it seems like the original version is better in many ways over the PS1 version. I suppose he could lose his balance but that isn't shown to be the case in the cutscene that plays after standing on a log too long. He just remains on the log without falling in! It makes no sense!

I grew up with these games and they will always hold a special place in my heart. That being said, I do recognize how flawed they are. Funnily enough, I downloaded the PC version of the game (in Spanish) and sometimes when you lose a life Hugo says "Apreta mas rapido los botones del telefono!" (meaning "Press the buttons on your phone more quickly!") which makes no sense because you're playing it on a computer, not a phone. Just goes to show how little care went into making the game, since they couldn't even bother to re-record some of Hugo's lines from the TV show.
@PixelPursuit

These games do seem nostalgic to a lot of people, I played this one fairly often when I was a kid so I know exactly what you mean. Wow, that's crazy! The English dub doesn't say anything like that, they must have re-recorded the English voice acting, or just selected voice clips that actually made sense. Like you say it seems like they put no care at all into the Spanish dub and probably didn't re-record anything.

The timer at 13:25 is there because apparently you can miss the plungey gun quick time event and then you will have to go around the mountain again. I have no idea how it's possible to miss it though :/

Fun fact: These minigames are actually direct ports from the TV versions, where the character were controller using a DTMF telephone. This is the reason for the poorly and way too simple gameplay. It was necessary for it to be playable on those simple pre-internet/everything days. It wasn't uncommon that there was a 2-3 second delay from the telephone button was pushed till the character responded. Some countries had pulse telephone systems and there could be 5-6 seconds delay... speaking of lag :D The very first Hugo game ever made: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Lx5Ce203fRg.html (in danish)
@Lexitivium
@Lexitivium 3 года назад
Additional fact: In Brazil the pulse telephone system was working so poorly that the production company pre-chose the players in advance (several weeks) and sent a small DTMF handheld tone sender that the player put on the telefon handset and pressed the desired key. This reduced the lag from 6-8 second to about 2-3 - pretty nice improvement. The system naturally then supported both tone and pulse for this to work, since not all players was able to receive the tone sender via mail (yes, the mail system wasn't than good back in the early 90's...) A unit very similar to this: www.mpja.com/DTMF-TONE-DIALER/productinfo/12150%20EN/

If you were a fan it must have been pretty awesome to be able to play the games from the TV show for yourself when the PS1 game came out! But yeah, if you consider someone like myself who had no prior knowledge of the Hugo brand, the game does come across as far too simple for it's time :D Jeez, I imagine not a lot of people would have been able to complete many of the games on the TV with that amount of lag! It's amazing that they sent out a device like that to remove the lag just so they could play Hugo on the TV. That just goes to show how popular Hugo must have been back then! If Hugo ever made a comeback, this whole interactive TV show idea could be executed much more efficiently nowadays with smart phones. Maybe Hugo was ahead of it's time!

@@PixelPursuit It was considered HIGH tech with a capital H back then... These days... well... wouldn't even raise an eyebrowse. Haha, you're clearly lacking nostalgia with these games :D I played them all the time on the PC as a kid and I still enjoy them today even though I'm very aware of the flaws now. The voice acting in the German version is actually pretty cute :3 Instead of "yippie" in the mountain level he says "trooooooll hop". Btw, the timer in this level is there in case you miss to press the button to go up.
@PixelPursuit
@PixelPursuit 3 года назад
Haha, yeah for sure! I only ever played this game when I was a kid, all of the others were brand new to me. From what people have told me it seems like the English voice acting is the worst version of the dub! But I have to admit I do kinda like it because of how obnoxious it is :P Yeah but from what I remember aren't you walking up the mountain anyway? So if you missed the button press you'd still eventually make your way to the top anyway realistically haha!

There is a bug in the skateboard mini game that allows you to fly/glitch through the level :D Found it by accident when I was a kid :D His many remarks during the levels and when you die are more fun in the danish/original version, albeit still obnoxious in the long run, and his voice suits him better in our language as well, in my opinion at least :D Honestly never bothered with Arcade Mode, so I was surprised to see that it featured actual story cutscenes, even if these seem to be lackluster :D
@PixelPursuit
@PixelPursuit 5 лет назад
Huh, I haven't ever seen that glitch! I'm not surprised that there's something like that in this game though! Yeah the remarks he makes in the English dub sometimes outright don't make sense, but in a way I think that makes it funnier. I just think it's ridiculous how Arcade Mode isn't the top option on the menu and isn't called 'Story Mode' or something. It's very misleading! Overall it's just not a very well made game! It has it's charm though!

I worked at this shop we had a nasty rude and lazy coworker named Hugo. Once he left his tools on an oil caddy that belonged to the shop that he wasn’t using the oil caddy and so I needed it and he said get your stupid fucking fingers off my tools. I couldn’t stand him he would sit and do nothing, worked on whatever cars he wanted to work on or would hide if it got too busy. I so happy that they fired him. Now he owes 5,000 dollars worth of tools and has no job to pay for them. Either way I hope he looks like this one day when I meet him again. If we ever meet again.

This version was a collection of each game that people used to play in the TV program. I once played live when i was six one of the games. They collected the most popular and create a "background story" so you rescue his family. So the base of the game was a version of the tv show for PS1.
@PixelPursuit
@PixelPursuit 5 лет назад
Yeah, it's a really cool concept that was probably too ahead of it's time. Wow, you actually played it? What game did you play? Haha, that probably explains why the PS1 game feels disjointed. It wasn't ever intended to be a single game like this!
@lucasfernandez9302

Rob's Retro Reviews I played one called Ice cavern, you had to jump constantly collecting some symbols. The rope scene was like the second part of you survived the mini game and then if you score a lot of points you won a bike or a game. I didn’t win hahahaha and this was in the 90s (I’m from Argentina) so Hugo was very popular...imagine was the same period of the Power rangers (first 90s season). So the only way you could play it in your home was buying the computer games (100% similar to the TV Show) or the PS1 collection
@PixelPursuit
@PixelPursuit 5 лет назад
Oh no, I didn't like that one. I think that game was featured in Hugo 2 for the PS1 (which I've also reviewed)! That's really cool how you actually won stuff, it's a shame you didn't win! I imagine a lot of people saw you play though! Although Hugo did air here in the UK, I don't think it was as big as in other European countries. I only have a very vague recollection of ever seeing it on TV so I mainly knew about him from this PS1 game.

Rob's Retro Reviews Great! To unlock it, you gotta play arcade mode and play every minigame and get every extra items (I don't remember all of 'em, but one of them was a flower lol). And in the ropes minigame there's 3 possible outcomes for Scylla: There's an ending where Scylla (as a bird) escapes and you DON'T get the secret minigame. If you pick the correct ending, a cutscene will appear where Hugo will reveal you just unlocked the minigame. So you go to the main menu and the minigame should be there!

in compilations (games and music) it is hard to do a balance that the games/tunes are not too different from each other, yet so they are not all the same, in compilation games, what I don't like if the controls are too complex for each game, something banana blitz did wrong, but WarioWare on the Gameboy advance did right
@PixelPursuit
@PixelPursuit 3 года назад
Exactly! One of the things you need to accomplish with any minigame collection is making sure that the controls are simple and easy to instantly understand. If it's too complicated than people will just never play the minigame because it's too difficult to explain to other people how it works. I've actually never played a WarioWare game... I hear that they're amazing though! I should probably give them a go!

I don't remember exactly when I got this game but to be honest it was probably one of my first games too! The reason I reviewed it in the first place was purely because of nostalgia so I'm the same in that way too! I just ended up going down a long road and reviewed 13 of the Hugo games which I never knew even existed. Yeah, graphically it's pretty bad considering it's on the PS1. The sounds are okay but the music is a bit hit and miss, some levels don't even have music at all which is really weird! If it had been expanded from the TV show and had way more depth to it, there's a slight possibility it could have been good, but they completely messed it up! No problem! TV version is actually the "practice" mode. Arcade mode is harder while you have three lives to go through the whole thing while they stay the same between levels, luckily they can be obtained back. Also, you move in the map in this mode forwards and backwards while completing levels (necessary for all bonus items and for the final main menu option). Or if one wants to be a lazy basterd, there's a cheat code for moving around on the map. Ye all do know you can save your Arcade progress while pausing on the level select, right? Max score if I recall is 99999 (or was it with one more 9, I know since I've grinded that). Also oof mang, that UK dub is horrid. The Finnish one is considered to be pretty legendary overall.
@PixelPursuit
@PixelPursuit 3 года назад
Yeah I figured that out after a while of playing haha, I still think it's weird how the modes aren't more clearly named and it's also weird how the main mode of the game isn't at the top of the menu too. Wait, I didn't know there was a final menu option, what is that? You mean just the last level where you beat Scylla? Or is there some kind of secret mode of the game on the main menu? Oh damn, I actually didn't know you could save the game like that! I never thought of pausing the game on the level select menu because in practically every other game you can't do that! Loads of people have said the Finnish version of the voice acting is a lot better! I'm just glad people agree with me that the UK dub is pretty bad haha!

RE: Final main menu option - that is a hidden one, once you go through every level in Arcade and get the score multiplier ye unlock Magic Hands, which works like Rope End, which is actually RANDOM each time. RE: Saving - yes, it works like that. You don't have to do all that stuff in one go kek. RE: Finland - the original Finnish dub voice for Hugo (who died in 2006) is at legendary status over 'ere, them one liners we have are pretty creative and amusing, as we can WORD PLAY somewhat, also how the voice is done is one reason for that as well. Too bad all the Hugo longplays on RU-vid use the English versions.

RE: Stuff - Perhaps taking a closer looksie at the manual would've helped with saving, as it is mentioned over there (I checked). I've unlocked that minigame, the only thing annoyed me that I did find the Forest and Lumber to be the most difficult things to complete. Lumber was the last one. Then I had to work my way back to the end... I discovered a cheat code, but ultimately didn't use it at any point. RE: General Hugo stuff - Yes, R.I.P. Harri Hyttinen, the OG Finnish dub voice. The man did acting, muzak and general dubbing over 'ere. Also, there's a video game museum in the city I live in, showcasing Finnish game history, there's a Hugo game you control with a telephone! Sound also comes from the phone itself. This page has an image of it: fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugo_(pelihahmo) - I've played it myself, was fun. I must say the english voice of Hugo sounds incredibly annoying. You must try finnish dub.
@PixelPursuit

Yeah it's quite bad isn't it! At the same time though, I think the constant bad voice acting is what gives the game a lot of it's charm!

The German dub has its charm too though I wouldn't call it bad. I like it much better than the English dub

Hugo sounds like Stitch from Lilo and Stitch in the original version. The english dub makes Hugo sound like ChrisChan.

Yeah, Hugo didn't age well...at least most other versions have better and funnier voice actors for Hugo. I guess the original interactive TV game was pretty good when you watched it with your family and had to call the studio to move Hugo.

Yeah I think a lot of the charm of the TV show was lost when it was translated to consoles. I can imagine the Hugo TV show would have been really interesting to watch at the time because there wasn't really a lot else like that. Strange to think that at one point in time Hugo could have been considered revolutionary haha!

Hugo was trash dude, I used to watch the tv show with a friend and we laughed at it, we realized it was bad back in the day, by the mid-late 90's we already had such amazing games, much better than that crap

Believe me, I know that Hugo is trash! I've given him more of a chance than most people! I've reviewed 13 of his games at this point! I never watched the TV show unfortunately :( I would have liked to have laughed at it but I never got the chance!

@@PixelPursuit I mean, it wasn't that bad back in those days, we will watch it and even enjoy it at times, internet was primitive and we didn't have it, so tv & videogames were pretty much all we have. I never knew that Hugo was also a console game, I always tought it was a phone game, but we would just sit and watch it. Over here there were other tv shows featuring phone games (mostly shitty) with even worse voices, but we had our fun time with it xD. Those afternoon shows were our company during those bread & milk afternoon snacks. But the one I remember the most was Pokemon, that anime was amazing at the time, that one I would love to watch it as a kid but not as an adult

You have insulted me and a character who marked true childhood memories. The PS1 version of Hugo games might be the worst to play with but your POV missinformation in this video made me hate you and defending your opinions against the character. These games were revolution in my country and basic built for minimal audience only so thats why you think its pretty simplistic, obnoxious and bland but thats not the whole point. I am not tolering this kind of situation so lets end up right here. Have a nice day mister *Dislike the video and not recommend*
@PixelPursuit
@PixelPursuit 2 года назад
I didn't mean to insult anyone or anything! I just made this video as more of a joke than anything else, but I do genuinely think it's pretty bad, especially for a PS1 game. I'm also pretty sure that there's absolutely no misinformation in this video either. They might have originally been made for a smaller audience, but being published across all of Europe on a major console will lead to it being compared to everything else on that console. To be fair, I feel like some of my videos talking about the PS2 Hugo games are probably slightly more positive than this, I did also end up slightly enjoying some of the other PS1 ones as well!
