In a hull-down position, the tank commander exposed only the turret of his tank to the enemy's sight, but in a manner that his main gun had a clear line of fire.
The aim was to reduce the silhouette of the tank as much as possible, exposing only the areas with the strongest armor.

Here we see WoT players who never played WT complain about things they have no idea about and which mostly dont even exist/work that way. Realy quite an interesting species. Their behaviour is uniquely agressive and is speculated to be the result of them trying to scare wise individuals off by sheere numbers and agressive memes.

Hi, former Bradley TC here. We take this tactic a step further, we have visual equipment located on top of the turret, one for the gunner that moves with the turret, 1 for the tank commander that is positioned higher, and acts independently from the turret. You position behind the hill, only exposing the TC's camera, the TC identies the target, gives a quick heads up command to the gunner as to where in relation to the front of the tank the where and waht target is. Then calls for the driver to move forward. Fire a volley, and order the driver back behind the embankment.the whole attack and retreat should take no longer than 6 seconds of exposure

Theres a nice short video of a firefight in Syria I believe. The T80 or a newer model was in a hull down position but after firing the shot it immediately started backing up. Not more than 2 seconds a TOW missile flew above the tank. That is an example how that in even modern tanks you cant rely on your turret armor very much. RPGs and TOW missiles have the ability to penetrate it.

A significant example of this tactic being used was during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, when a vastly-outnumbered Israeli tank brigade, commanded by Avigdor Kahalani, successfully held onto the Golan Heights and repelled the larger Syrian force from breaching the ridge. At one point in the fight, there were only a handful of tanks positioned on the Israeli side, and there was just a single tank captain routinely switching tanks to fire at a detachment of Syrian armour for nearly a day, until he could be relieved. This defense occurred in an area eventually known as the "Valley of Tears".

also very important to improve the armor effectiveness is to position your own armor in an angled position to the enemy. Especially during World-War 2, the German tanks had only poorely sloped armor. If standing on a ramp, positioning your own armor in a leaned-back position, the risk of penetrating hits is reasonably reduced.

Tank Trenches were great. Drive down the backslope and have total cover. In the event of a retreat it's very easy to escape. However, in the event of needing to push forward it is most advised to back up and go around the trench as opposed to climbing the front.

I was Infantry at Ft. Stewart , Georgia and was a Bradley driver for a year before becoming a 60 gunner and carrying the " hog ", . We practiced " hull downs " a lot and they make sense. The less exposure , the less can get hit.
