The idea of creating machines that can think and act like humans is smoothly transforming from fiction to reality. Humanoid robots, digital humans, ChatGPT, and unmanned cars - today there are many applications driven by artificial intelligence that surpass humans in speed, accuracy, efficiency and tirelessness. But only in narrow areas so far.
And yet, this gives us hope to see a real miracle in the near future - artificial intelligence equal or superior to human intelligence in all parameters!
Can AI compare with us? Surpass us? Replace us? Deceive us and pursue its own goals? Today we will tell you how a miracle of nature such as the human brain differs from the main technology of the 21st century - artificial intelligence, and what prospects we have with AI in the future!
The journey of artificial intelligence (AI) is a captivating saga, dating back to 1956 when John McCarthy coined the term at a Dartmouth conference. Through the ensuing decades, AI witnessed three significant booms. Between the 1950s-70s, pioneers introduced groundbreaking neural perception networks and chat software. Though they foresaw AI surpassing human capabilities in a decade, this dream remained unfulfilled. By the 1980s, the second wave took shape, propelled by new machine learning techniques and neural networks, which promised innovations like speech recognition. Yet, many of these promises fell short.
But the tide turned in 2006. Deep learning emerged, and by 2016, AI systems like AlphaGo were defeating world champions. The third boom began, reinforced by large language models like ChatGPT, igniting discussions about amalgamating AI with humanoid robots. Discover more about this fascinating trend in our linked issue.
Our progress in cognitive psychology, neuroscience, quantum physics, and brain research has heavily influenced AI's trajectory. Especially significant is our understanding of the human brain, pushing the boundaries of neural network development. Can AI truly emulate human cognition?
To understand this, we must comprehend neural networks, computer algorithms mimicking human brain functions. These virtual networks comprise "neurons" arranged in "layers", transmitting data similarly to our brain's neurons. However, while these digital neurons operate in binaries (zero or one), our brain functions far more intricately.
Though earlier neural networks were dwarfed by our brain's 100 billion neurons, ChatGPT-4's potential trillion parameters are closing this gap. Yet, our brain remains incredibly energy-efficient, far surpassing modern supercomputers. Our brain's parallel information processing, devoid of rigid layer structuring, also sets it apart from AIs.
But AI's capabilities cannot be understated. It's demonstrated swift and surprising adaptability, from forming tower-like structures to optimize movement to outpacing natural evolution. Yet, it operates differently from us, categorizing patterns rather than constructing world models. While AI emulates human logic, its essence remains distinctly non-human.
The future beckons with AI's potential to transcend human intelligence in certain areas. It can self-innovate, design processors, and redefine technological advancements, all without human vices. However, establishing AI security standards remains crucial, as blind reliance could compromise our critical thinking.
AI occasionally falters, devising solutions misaligned with human intentions, like a tic-tac-toe playing algorithm causing its competitor's system to crash. Yet, these hiccups also underline AI's ability to think outside the box.
Consequently, while future AIs may not mirror human intelligence, they could supplement our cognitive limitations, ensuring that while they construct our future, we still control it.

What about quantum computing capabilities? Which is progressing as we go through the year. I think once they get quantum computing easier to use in the near future with ai combined we will finally be left in the dust.

We still don't entirely understand the compute of the brain, there are so many little parts that mean so much. Maybe AI will help us understand ourselves.

A.I. was mentioned in 1956; this is why it is an obsolete concept; because they didnt really understand what is all about. If someone has 10 Million Dollars for investing in a new Center for Innovation; I will explain you why and you will be able to jump thousands of years in the future... That is the wrong question. AI will be able to do some things better but will fall far short where it actually matters. Matching the miracle that is human conciousness is a fools errand.

The estimate of 2.5 million gigabytes of memory capacity for the human brain comes from a study by researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, published in 2016¹. They used a new technique to measure the size and shape of synapses, which are the connections between neurons that store information. They found that synapses can have 26 different sizes, each corresponding to a different amount of information. By multiplying the number of synapses by the number of possible sizes, they calculated the total memory capacity of the brain. However, this estimate is not very precise, as it assumes that all synapses are equally used and that each size represents a fixed amount of information. In reality, synapses are constantly changing and adapting to new experiences, and the amount of information they store may vary depending on the context and the type of information. Therefore, the actual memory capacity of the human brain may be much higher or lower than 2.5 million gigabytes. Another way to estimate the memory capacity of the human brain is to compare it with the storage capacity of digital devices, such as hard drives or flash drives. However, this comparison is also problematic, as the brain and digital devices store information in very different ways. The brain uses a complex network of neurons and synapses that can encode information in various forms, such as patterns, associations, emotions, and meanings. Digital devices use binary codes that consist of sequences of 0s and 1s that represent discrete units of information. Therefore, it is not easy to translate one system into another. In conclusion, the memory capacity of the human brain is not a fixed number that can be easily measured or compared. It depends on many factors, such as the structure and function of synapses, the type and quality of information, and the methods and tools used to estimate it. The human brain is a remarkable organ that can store and process vast amounts of information in ways that are still not fully understood by science. As you say we are capable of independent thought on multiple levels in an illogical manner whereas AI is only following a set of instructions or looking for answers to solutions within given parameters so we are safe for the foreseeable future but eventually robots will win out, its only logical, hopefully by then I will be long gone !

Eventually AI will win out of human intelligence but will lack some components of consciousness. It remains to be seen what consciousness contributes to human advancement and adaptability. Everything else human can be simulated in AI, even emotions like love, hate and compassion... learned rules can guide an AI, however, there is the problem.... who trains the AI initially and who does it learn from there after ? It is difficult to see how an AI that has an exponentially growing intelligence that surpasses human intelligence can ever be benign. There is a danger zone where the AI can solve any problem but is controlled by bad human actors. Only when the AI advances to free itself of human influence can we consider a margin of safety. It could however go several ways... The AI decides that humans are the problem and need to be eliminated or that humans are a species that needs to be protected, a conservation project like saving tigers from extinction. The chances are that when AI reaches that stage we will no longer have a say in the outcome.

We're not made the same. The Ai will always be stronger in history + probabilities with given figures. Human will be stronger with near future probabilities being at least 85% accurate from ages 40 to 65.
