@@Dfens0 why the snarky attitude - "Saudi Arabian people won't miss you." And you still didn't address the specific concern Tricky is talking about.

The first thing I have to contribute to this conversation is to draw lines between governments and people. Whatever I think of Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin, Kim Jong Un, or any other regime, it's VITAL not to extend generalizations into the people just trying to live their lives under their rule.

About 16 minutes in - Addressing why you don't really see people on Twitter addressing this or having a more serious conversation. From my experience and what I observe online, many members of the American FGC seem to be less knowledgeable about political affairs. For many, video games serve as an escape from politics and serious world issues. They prefer to focus solely on playing their video games. I often see gaming buddies on Facebook making jokes about politics or presidential debates, seemingly unaware of the seriousness of these matters. Unfortunately, there appears to be a general attitude that if an issue doesn’t directly affect them, it isn’t worth their attention. When I was younger, I shared a similar mindset, but as I grew older, I realized the significant impact politics can have on our lives. Laws and political decisions can greatly improve or deteriorate a person's quality of life. I've drifted apart from many gaming buddies who still have the "I don't care, I just want to play video games" mindset. I believe that everyone needs to take a stance on important issues, even gamers. Not choosing a stance is, in itself, a response-and often the worst one.

Thank you for talking about this. My heart broke when SNK was purchased by the Saudi crown prince. KoF and Metal Slug were my loves, and maybe there's no ethical consumption under capitalism, but the line is too straight for me. I can't hand my money to the literal, actual people who are verifiably responsible for genocide.
@KazeShikamaru

But some idiots are praising it because they get their T&A not realizing how bad that is.
@bloomallcaps
@bloomallcaps 2 месяца назад
Tbh though, it's incredible how much of an 180 SNK did when it got bought, just banger after banger (samurai showdown, KOF xv, KOF xiii re-release, city of the wolves)
@ThePlKLE
@ThePlKLE 2 месяца назад
Man I get you, but it isn't snk's fault they got bought. If we boycott a company that has always struggled, the only people who are hurt are the people in that company. The Saudi overlords will be entirely unaffected. Buying city of the wolves isn't funding genocide any more than listening to music is supporting sex trafficking
@theflashfan3234
@theflashfan3234 2 месяца назад
@@ThePlKLE it quite literally is though. I understand that the $70 we'd pay would be not even a drop in the ocean of wealth that they have to fund their "activities", but at the end of the day, your financial support did go to them. Boycotting the company, and on a larger community level, boycotting the sportswashing events in these places lets the TOs and companies know that we as a community don't fuck with genocide, and those committing it and looking to use the community as a way to clean their image. The FGC is based on grassroots level events, after all. There's a lot of fighting games out there and a lot of tournaments to participate in. Not purchasing one to keep the conscience clear won't be the end of the world.
@ThePlKLE
@ThePlKLE 2 месяца назад
@theflashfan3234 I think that's fair. Please do not suggest, though, that those who do purchase snk games are not of clear conscience or that they are of lower moral value. Snk does not make games because they love genocide. They make games because they love making games. If you expect them to stop all production and willingly make themselves unemployed because of something entirely beyond their control lest they be deemed bad people, then I think you're missing a bit of nuance in the matter. Also it's not like "Saudi prince owns snk and all snk money goes to war". It's more like "Snk is owned by a company that's owned by another company that's owned by Saudi prince. Money is circulated through businesses, just like everywhere else, and unfortunately, some of it gets back to Saudi prince, who engages in horrible stuff"

📌 Welcome to the discussion, everyone! This video tackles the complex issue of hosting international gaming events like EVO in regions with significant legal and cultural barriers, specifically focusing on Saudi Arabia. 🔹 What are your thoughts on how global politics and cultural differences impact the inclusivity and safety of international esports events? 🔹 Do you believe that such events should prioritize human rights and community safety over financial and logistical considerations? Feel free to share your insights, experiences, and suggestions. Let's keep this conversation respectful and informative! 👍

Slightly different but I know exactly where your coming from in the intro. As a kid who grew up in military bases for the first chunk of my formative life, it was wild coming to the states and hearing how sharply the rhetoric changed. The racism increased ten-fold, the misconception of places in Europe (which I i grew up in) etc there was so much that frustrated me growing up.

Great video and important topic. Awesome to see folks take a stand on this. It's important not to project our values onto another culture, but we also need to address cultural realities that put people at risk. The biggest fear of folks with an anti-LGBTQ agenda is that people will see and know players that a queer, trans, etc. and then realize that there's nothing to fear or hate. I didn't know you were trans until this video but thanks to knowing people that expanded my worldview, we can be at a point where it doesn't matter. SA can sanitize their image all they want and try to buy everything, but folks can see through that BS once they are exposed to people different than themselves.

This was a good conversation last night, Tricky. I think that conversations like this are important to help close the worldwide gap between different cultures. I believe that the Middle Eastern culture has a right to their own beliefs, just like we Americans should have our own beliefs. It is a complicated matter that goes far beyond a fighting game tournament, and maybe one day, there can be a time where our cultural differences can be overlooked, and simply sit down in thr same room, and play some fighting games.

I went on a 30 minute rant about the EWC to my partner when I first learned about it happening and the number of FGC people that didn't care and/or would be attending. Thank you for speaking on this. There's a lot of concern trolling and disingenuous accusations flying around, trying to shut down all discussion of collaborating with this genocidal state with assertions that we're racist or Islamaphobic. You, Sajam, and I think Broski are the only people I follow who have fallen on the correct perspective (I'm trying to avoid listing all the Sauds' offenses beyond their LGBTQ+ policy and it's a struggle). Honestly it just feels like begging the void to listen and care. The general public doesn't care about trans people (and LGBTQ+ people in general) and they're proud of their ignorance of history and current events. It's exhausting and hopeless.

This was a point of actual light in the sea of dim takes. There is so much hedging and inconsistent positions on these issues when the actual laws, or lack thereof, are things that give bigotry actual structural power. Avoiding saying them doesn't make them disappear. The "assumption of risk" (or I suppose the downplaying of risk) feels like ppl want it both ways: we can discriminate a la carte. You can't be who you are but you can if you're not. Framing the laws as a measure of etiquette, which is I suppose what pdas are, and not just dehumanizing is avoiding the issue imo. Places are allowed to have their performative customs, sure, but what drives the creation and enforcement of said actions? What is the future ideal projection for a governing body? Who does that future contain? What can they do? What happens to those who can't or don't? I'm no genius so maybe this is a reach but Jesse Owens being able to compete didn't change the fate for so many who had to live inside the jurisdiction or make anyone in German governance change their minds. Why should anyone LGTBQIA2S+ in the fgc feel OK about this on the say so of ANY person, culture, or legislative body that sees their existence as "ideology"? Thx for the video. Seriously nutritious in starving times.

yeah, i mean gay and trans are not remotely the same thing so how they respond to Trans existence is and can't really be handled like they do gay people. commentor responded with a simple Yes being trans is breaking the law there. So it's illegal and there is no way to not be trans in public hence we are not legally allowed to exist in that nation. I'm staying the F out until I'm not considered to be breaking the law for existing.
