The big part of the deadlift that many might have not noticed that makes it more impressive is that he’s doing that weight double over hand with out chalk or straps . Good stuff man
this is awesome, but please god someone stop mike before he demolishes his back. trying to clean 165 on his first ever session? trying to deadlift 215 with a rounded back? made me cringe. Also holy hell Rude is strong.
I don't know Ritchies obviously a world class athlete, but I think Mike did pretty well holding 250w and then going up 20w each 10 seconds on a bike holy fuck that sounds brutal !
That's a great comment. It's important to remember that Mike does review bikes for a living, he's nowhere near a casual rider. This year he came 30th in the BC Bike Race, which is a Pro level field.
Such a cool series. This ones the best so far. Richie is a monster. I just nearly ate a whole tombstone while laying on couch watching a movie too....i feel humbled lol
I thought deadlift started as a leg press and switched to hinge as the bar passed the knee? That said, clean to front squat would have been a better choice. Oh and some basic cues for Mike would have helped. You can tell he doesnt even lift bro.
I liked his watt test one the erg (who calls it an "E. R. G." btw?) but what's up with the clean and press as one of, "the two most important power strength exercises"? I like the clean portion but a vertical pressing movement? How is that applicable to riding a bike? Also, how is some kind of a squatting movement not in his top two? Todd seems to be very successful and whatever he's doing seems to work but as a life long S&C coach, the stuff he did in the weight room seems a bit bizarre. Are there any more in depth interviews with Todd? I realize this might be lacking a lot of context.
Yeah I agree. No squat? Clean & Press is nonsense for a biker. Good for general conditioning and core as well as speed work, but it's a performance exercise, not a strength exercise, so it's little more than a novelty at the best of times. For a biker... odd choice. Just watched a video yesterday with Dr Isratel. He laid it out plain - main exercises for quads are high bar back squat, front squat, hack squat. The only thing I can think of might be if he gets his quad work from functional cycling and therefore he keeps squats as a secondary tier exercise. Might explain it, but I certainly wouldn't recommend that.
A vertical clean and press guarantees every muscle group in the kinetic chain under that bar will be firing and the coordination of getting a weight from floor to overhead in a powerful way is great for athletic development. The first third of the movement massive posterior chain contribtution from hip extensors, lats dorsi etc (very relevant to mtb.) Overhead the rotator-cuff is firing ++. How would that not benefit an EWS racer? If that isn't enough then consider how and over the bars situation develops. By doing this if Richie is adding a little insurance policy that if he does go over the bars it may be the difference between walking away and being laid up for a while.
True, but compared to many pro athletes he is average. I've been saying explosive cycling like Enduro and DH need a more athletic/muscle frame than the traditional cyclist body
Richie is obviously a beast, but kinda surprised he isn't lifting heavier than 355x4 on DL. Just looking at him I would figure he could do 455+ 1 rep max pretty easy. Not that lifting heavier would make him a better mtn bike racer by any means. His wattage on the C2 erg is good.
He didnt look like he was struggling too much, which makes sense because why risk injury fot a bragging rights video, so i wouldnt be suprised that if he pushed, he could get much higher.
You do bench press motions on the bike all the time. It's the whole row/anti-row concept. Doesn't mean you have to do a traditional bench press in order to get stronger there. Your feet up on a bench and your hands on an exercise ball. Those bodyweight push-ups will make you strong.
Good exercise, poor form. Also, bench press is a compound movement, not isolation. When done correctly it will work many different muscles that will in fact help you on a bike.
ok thats kinda interesting, not meant in a negative way, rich is still one of the strongest MTB pros out there, but a 160 kg deadlift for 4 is not that much at all, I can do that for 2-3 (depends on how im feeling, during a training week of course) and I'm a 18 year old who's been training weights for 6 months, and ill be able to do that in a month or two, not a seasoned pro in their prime (and on steroids even, sorry but that does play a part). Rowing too, though I don't know how long I can hold my max, I do know I can produce 500w for 1.5 min, so similar to him. idk about the biking though
I love it, very good video! But Richie is starting to look more like a crossfit competitor than MTB racer.....please don't take it the wrong way guys! I am not a hater or trying to slag anyone off, just all that mass get's in the way (not as agile on the bike and can't keep high BPMs for long). I think that Richie is great racer and real champ!!! Can't wait to see more videos.
Late reply but I totally agree. You can't help think that his size has resulted in a lot more mechanicals (mainly punctures) than his competitors. A lighter rider is lighter on his gear which is super important in 2 days enduro events.
That's ok, life is more nuanced than an over-simplistic and frankly childish binary division between haters and fan boys. You make an important point. Could Richie be more successful as a lighter rider?
Same here, it's a good feeling, even though he's doing it at a far lower body fat percentage than I am! I'd be curious to see which pro DH or Enduro guy has the highest one rep max deadlift. I'm sure Richie is up there. Dude is pretty solid.
Yeah, didn't he get banned for performance enhancing drugs? Having said that he was probably doing what 90% of the competitors do. Let's be honest about it.
