Throbak set: Alnico 5 - 7.8k neck and 8.4 bridge
Custom Buckers: Alnico 3 -
Lick 1 - full guitar volume
Lick 2 - guitar volume 4
Lick 3 - guitar volume 7
lick 4 - full guitar volume
Played the same licks as close as possible. Pickups loaded into the same guitar, with the same amp on the same exact settings. 1 close mic only. Reverb from logic.
The pickup heights are relatively the same. The pole screws were adjusted to taste.
RS Guitarworks electronics in my guitar. EQcable cables being used.

Throbaks have a nice bloom into feedback.

Just ordered the throwback pick ups myself to replace custom buckers and a double cut Les Paul after watching a variety of videos. I finally gave up the 700 bucks. I truly hope they sound just as damn good as they do on this video and hopefully better lol but my custom fuckers just don’t drive hard enough and they get loose in the bottom when you get the game to high, I have seen these pick ups doing straight metal and still keeping string clarity so I can’t see how it can be too bad of investment as universal as they are much better than the bar Smuckers or excuse me custom buckers piece 1:18

It’s so close that there’s no way I’d pull stock pickups for the very slight difference.

Big diff in the room. Throbaks were much more lively. I personally wouldn’t pay that much for them unless I had to have their covers... but the CBs aren’t nearly as musical.

Visual Guy I watched it on my iPad so admittedly that played a roll in sound dynamics’s. Thanks for sharing!

Visual Guy what are your favorite paf clones at the moment?
@VisualGuy

I don’t really have a favorite. it is all a ‘per guitar’ basis. I always adjust, and make sure I have wiring the way I like it, which is 50’s wiring with good pots and PIO caps. Then they are just variations & they sound different in each guitar. Currently, I have Monty’s in my 339, Lust For Tone 59s in my SG and Porter Anthem Plus in my LP. Subject to change at anytime! Haha

Visual Guy in that case do you thinks the throbaks are worth it when porter anthems, antiquities, etc can be had for way less money?

Nick McAllister I’ll be honest, it is hard to get straight answers out of me, because I don’t like to give public opinions that make one company look better than the other. That said: Throbak’s prices include the cost to cover the huge investment in the covers they make themselves and other things. They don’t order pickup covers like a lot of companies. I think Throbaks are great PAF pickups. I’ve sold every set I have owned. I don’t think there is magic dust that exist. I think that there are several sets that work in most people’s guitars and they find one set and never know if others do. So they swear by that. If you buy pickups used, you can try multiples and sell them for 0 loss in case they don’t work. You can research and watch all my vids, to help make an informed decision, but real life experience is always going to trump youtube! Like any gear choice, once you choose, the main part is being confident in your choice. Are Throbaks worth it for me? No way. But they are def worth it to a lot people. Shoot me a DM or PM on insta or FB. We can discuss your goal and price range and maybe I will make a suggestion(s) for you!

Throwback brassy not as clear cause A5 vs Gibson A3. Custombucker all day and cheaper. Even clean A3 sounds better cause of the weaker magnets and driven it’ll sound clearer too cause of the same.

Why didn't you demo the middle position?
@VisualGuy
@VisualGuy 4 года назад
I didn’t feel it was necessary. Everyone of these sets are on my channel individually with the middle position used. Just not in the shootout videos
