Humbugs (1967)

Bury, Lancashire.
Several cellophane packets of humbugs are seen rolling down a conveyor belt. Various shots show how humbug sweets are made at this factory - amazing! A long length of syrup mixture is pulled about by a special machine; two men squash it into strips with treacle-coloured lengths. A huge chewy centre wrapped in a treacle 'blanket' is put on top of the squashed strips then rolled up by the men.
The huge 84lb giant sweetie is put into a twisting and stretching machine and the end of it is fed between two rollers to make a long thin strip of sweetie mixture; this is cut by the machine into lozenges. Thousands of humbugs are seen travelling along conveyor belts. Some sweets are wrapped in shiny paper by a machine.
Fabulous! This is one of my favourites!
Cuts exist - see separate record.

@@joeswanson733 I'd hope they at least had a foot pedal to turn the machine on and off. Push and hold it to keep it on, at least until you've gotten far enough in the process to bend down and hit the "stay on" switch.

British Pathe is currently one of my favorite RU-vid channels, because of nice old footage like this. I also never know what I might find if I search under their videos something like "airplane," "snowball," or "potato."

Update: I searched "pig," and got footage of pigs on a pig swing. There was also footage of teaching a pig to jump, and a pig-calling contest. This channel has much that I might not have otherwise been exposed to.

Just a few years ago, humbugs were manufactured in exactly the same way. It's hard work, the shaft from which the candies are made is heavy, hot and slippery, in addition it deforms easily and you have to move it from the table to the machine, it was a challenge every time!

My uncle Jack worked in this factory, back in 1965. I remember him telling me how the humbug mixture would frequently get wrapped around workers necks, pulling them into the machinery. If you look at around 1:29, those lads manhandling the giant sticky lump are actually in considerable danger. Uncle Jack saw more than a few blokes end up inside a humbug, sucked down the production line head first. Margret is working at the point where heads would roll, quite literally, through the machinery - with the bodies flaying above the production line - blood everywhere.
