My Hummer H2 is pretty cool, but there's simply not enough interior room. Now, that problem has been solved...with a brand new aftermarket spare tire carrier. Here's the complete installation. Hint: It's easy! You can do this!
Great video with one exception. the pin on the hinge side goes in the top hole and the bolt goes in the bottom hole. it is meant to swing down, not up. that way you can lower your tire to the ground with little effort. Not many people want to be lifting a heavy tire off a mount.
Great video Sean, I have a 2008 Hummer h2, the first thing I did when I got it was to go to a 285 70R 17 tires, MAN what a big difference, better MPG, much better ride and easier to steer. Ignore all the internet trolls out there and keep the videos coming.
@@nando03012009 Admittedly, I don't open and close mine very often, but it's been perfect for me. The only thing I'd recommend would be to put some oil or paint on the big nut on the hinge area. Mine has already rusted. Besides that, it's awesome! Thanks for keeping me updated!
Great video Sean, but are you going to do a follow-on video about moving the camera so it will be functional again? I have the same problem, but I am not a experienced electrician!
Thank you! I've been giving it a lot of thought. I will probably mount the camera in the 3rd brake light. If I put it on the spare tire, I'd have to disconnect it to change the tire. It's hooked up behind the license plate now, but the location makes the camera shot waaaay off center. Pretty much useless. When I come up with a brilliant plan, I'll let you know! I'm inspired now! lol
Thank you so much! We really enjoy it. We got it originally to evacuate in the event of a hurricane, but it's a great daily driver, too. Thanks for liking and subscribing! Have a fantastic day!
Sean! I bought the same tire carrier that you have. Just subscribed to your channel. Can you share what replacement hitch pin you bought was well as the felt padding you were talking about?
I bought a 1/2 inch pin at Harbor Freight. I haven't bought any of the felt-backed padding yet, because once I installed the correct size of pin, most of the sloppiness and rattling went away. I can't hear it at all as I drive down the road. Thank you for watching and subscribing to my channel, and have fun with the Hummer!
@@ClearHeatVision I thought about getting one of those, but changed my mind. I figured if a person tried to steal the tire and wheel, they would probably just remove the lug nuts. That's why I bought locking lug nuts. If you decide on a locking pin, I would imagine most locking pins with a 1/2 inch diameter would work.
Great video! Just bought the same one I'm using it for an H1. I think that bolt and pin are backwards. I think its supposed to swing down instead of up so you can get the tire on and off easier.
@@j.martinez111 The part number will take you directly to the correct part. There will only be one part shown. I don't have the brand, but there will only be one shown.
I've bought one of these for the first H2 I bought, I just bought H2 #3 now and it needs a carrier so I'll be ordering another one soon. I had to modify it a little, the part where the latch is was not finished correctly, had to round off the corners and it had too large of a hole for the small pin they shipped with it so I welded a washer around it. I think it is a 1 5/8 nut, we had a socket that big. I like the drop down feature, saves having to lift the big tire up, Hummer #2 I have 37's on it and a 37" spare but that one has a stock carrier no drop down. They all have a little play in them which is annoying. Then there's the license plate light and I can't remember how I did it now, I think it already had a mount but it had been removed and the wiring was left so I didn't have anything to do there, if it never had a mount on back then some rewiring will be required, license plate light is required by law. Backup camera, I'm not sure where the best place to go with that yet, I have to relocate one, maybe onto the spare and I'll just drill a hole into the plastic hub cap. Overall, this one isn't bad, you can get them on amazon, could have been finished more and a better latch than a pin with too big of a hole.
@@mohawkgarage you know I just went and looked at mine I think I put the bigger pin in the drop down arm. I ended up using a different push button pin for the release.
Sean, the 18mm bolts you reference at the beginning… are those the head size or the bolt size? Also, how long are they… I can’t find it online anywhere. Thank you
18mm refers to the bolt head. I don't recall the length of the bolts. The instructions didn't mention length, either. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I bought one of these and it lasted about 3 years. The metal on the right rear of the bracket was tearing away from where its mounted (maybe you will have better luck). The tire was leaning more and more away from the truck. It was fine for a while. It also started to tear at the top tire mount area. Its a great idea, I wish they used a heavier gauge steel. I even welded a gusset on it for more support. My H2 averages 10K miles a year and I barely go off road. Keep an eyen on them welds and measure the distance between the tire and the back window. I suspect that gap will get larger in time until you get fed up with it. I ended up opening my wallet and found an OEM one.
This H2 gets driven very rarely (probably 2k miles a year), so I've got some time. It'll probably be sold this year. I'd rather have a pickup. lol Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@nando03012009 The instructions showed that it could be mounted on the left side of the bumper. That's where I put it. So far, so good. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@Sean Roberts thanks for the response. What I meant was the wiring for the light. I'll be honest with you. I don't know where to splice to get the light to work
@Carlos C I spliced the new wiring into the old wiring at the plug. Turn parking lights on, then put the new wires in the old plug. Try different combinations until the light comes on. When you get light, you have the correct wires. Hope that helps!
Thank you for the great how to! I have a random question for ya. Would you be able to tell me the distance between the mount holes, left side to the right side of the vehicle? I think I can adapt one of these carriers to work on my project vehicle. Thanks!
It's pretty easy to aim headlights. While I've never made a video about it, there are lots of them that show you how. I normally park on a flat surface, aiming the vehicle at a wall...about 20 feet away. If you look at the front of the headlight, you'll see adjusters on one side and on the top. Just screw those in or out to move the beam where you want it to be. When you've finished one side, line up the other side with it. Good luck and thanks for watching!
@@j.martinez111 I believe it is a T15 Torx head or a Philips head screwdriver, but you may want to confirm that. I didn't have to adjust mine. Good luck!
I bought the same kit but a problem, in the picture it shows 2 bearings upper and lower which makes more sense since the upper nut will just dig in frame of carrier. Kit only came with one bearing i ordered sec bearing. If you need part number I’ll provide it. Plus the license plate light is really bad poor quality I upgraded mine to a led light fixture. Thanks for the video!
Very good points! One bearing doesn't make sense and LED is better. I'd like part number. That's what I did, too. I bought two license plate bolt lights that seem to be working well so far. Thanks for watching!
A license plate bracket comes with the kit. It is mounted on the left side of the bumper. My kit also included a light for the plate. I had to extend the factory wiring. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@mohawkgarage hi sean i liked and subscribed, i just bought a hummer and ordered sparetire carrier you have but i also have back up camera did you do the video to relocate?
@@lububu1158 Congratulations! I moved my back-up camera to the left side of the bumper. It's temporary, though. While it still works, it's obviously off-center. I want to figure out a way to mount it in the center of the rear, but I've yet to come up with a good plan. I've considered mounting it up by the third brake light or in the center of the spare tire, but nothing yet. I'll make sure I make a video when I come up with a good plan. Thanks for watching!
