Good to see the conclusion thanks for posting. I had a chevy colorado with the same 3.5 motor that had similar issues eg slightly eradic idle, misfire codes that were only intermittent. The truck only had 88k so I sold it fearing it was the dreaded and common valve seat issue.

So I have this issue with my h3 and been driving it for about 10,000miles with this valve sear issue(bought the h3 used with 165,000 miles) now has 175,000. Will it hurt anything if I continue to drive as is??! Thanks!

how about go TDC on # 4 bore scope in cyl. put small rubber hose through intake get it close to the valve ,squirt in WD40 watch for leakage.Something like this may have been suggested already,dont know didnt read all posts,love this channel,,always well explained
@jajupa78

so I suppose if we follow the rabbit down the hole. Long term it explains why these engines eat up catalytic converters. Because if the intake(air/fuel)valve is constantly bleeding air into the cylinder that's going to make it run lean, and lean means extremly hot exhaust gas, excessively hot exhaust means melted converter, broken exhaust manifold bolts at the head, ect.. It all makes sense now. Thanks scannerdan, great series, subscribed!:]

Two weeks ago, I fixed a 2006 Hummer H3 with this exact same problem. I noticed that there is TSB for this problem. By watching your videos, I felt very confident performing the job. Thank you ScannerDanner.

On this one, it's apparent and can be seen with the naked eye. Though I've taken heads off you couldn't see a problem with valves or the seats. Put a spark plug back in and fill combustion chamber with varsol and watch it come pouring out. As always, great videos Mr. Danner

Very nice, them look like hot spots in the seats that caused the valves to deform the seats. Seen that several times.

Hey Paul. I just watched all the Hummer series over again and Cook particular interest to the maf sensor waveform. For the exercise i am going to perform the tests using my Pico on a known good vehicle that has adjustable rockers and create inlet leaks and exhaust leaks and compare them with valve sealing properly. I will recharge the battery between each test (although proberbly not neccesary) to eliminate any variable cranking speed. Hopefully the tests will give us good direction by being able to compare the same cylinder in various conditions. I will email the results to you when i have done it. Regards. James
@DENicholsAutoBravado
@DENicholsAutoBravado 9 лет назад
+james ross I've always had to charge the battery between compression tests, but I've seen batteries that hold their state of charge better. Now realize, one of these batteries tested good on very professional equipment too.
@DENicholsAutoBravado
@DENicholsAutoBravado 9 лет назад
+james ross With a voltmeter you can see when you've gotten to the exact same voltage. It really doesn't take long. The first compression test I did showed less compression in every cylinder. I'd never heard of batteries being run down in so little cranking but I suspected it. Ran the first cylinder again after doing the whole engine and it had equally less compression as if it was the "worst" cylinder.

Great videos Paul! Many thanks for all your effort! It seems to me that the valves are also slightly bent, caused by an incorrect heat distribution along them, for using a "not so great quality" material...maybe? Just a thought. Anyways, keep doing what you`re doing man, you really are a very good technician and a great teacher too. Thumbs up!

To add some accuracy to the test i will connect a leak down tester to the cylinder when creating the valve leak and bring it up to the same 70% we seen on the Hummer

I see that all the time on those soft MAZDA heads. They get a hot spot and the alum sags in that area causing a leak. If that area cleans up last when you cut the seat that is pretty much the same thing

the problem on those is the same as the problems with the 3.5 straight 5 in the colorado/canyon 05 and 06 years I believe. gm used seats that were too soft that would wear out quickly like this. gm has a revised head with harder seats and I believe this is covered under warranty up to 100k miles.

Wrong, the problem doesn't exist according to GM and has never been covered under any extension of their standard warranty.

Johnny Perkins is it not even worth replacing? I have 64k miles on my 2008 hummer h3. I’m experiencing the same things you are. With the rough idle with the rpm bouncing when you crank the engine from a cold start and the decreased engine power when I’m accelerating the vehicle. I’ve been debating to sell my 08 h3 to carmax or trading it in for a new vehicle.

Wow... That's awful! I've never seen anything like that! That is not normal wear... I suspect that there's a valve (non)rotation issue, and the carbon buildup on that valve makes me think it's involved, too. That's pretty much not repairable, either. That'll need new seats. Ah well, time to pass it off to the Engines department! Have 'em knock down that god-awful machinist ridge, too; give yourself some low-lift flow. :D
@ScannerDanner

It will eventually ruin your catalytic converter. That's about it. Maybe more frequent oil changes will be needed too, due to incomplete combustion and blow-by gases accumulating in the crankcase.

Mine's had low compression in one cylinder for years. Probably this issue. There's an elevated misfire count, but not enough to set a code. Idles fine, runs well enough. CC still good. I'm planning a rebuild maybe this summer. Will a mild valve grind resolve it long term? IDT new heads are avail anymore. Thanks!
