I got one of these in 2018 and used it in the spring for walleye and pike fishing in Ontario . It is more than you really need and once you understand what you're looking at on the screen and what was underneath the boat and whether there was fish or not, it really makes a difference and will step up your game big time. Don't know how I survived without one over all these years.
Right! I bet that is fun fishing up there. I haven't messed with any settings yet but my buddy has one too and he has it dialed in and what a game changer! We were finding schools of crappie like crazy! I'm mainly up shallow so haven't use it bunch yet but going be doing lot of fishing with it next season. Great unit!
Thanks for the vid. I just put in my order found a new one for $279.00. Whats crazy is the bottom view is way clearer than the $1000.00 hook 7 carbon on my old rig.
You're welcome Charles. That's a nice price you found it at too. I have owned it couple years now and no issues. Love it. It's my main unit ice fishing too. Enjoy!
In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens ru-vid.comUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.
Awesome! That was nice of them for exchanging that for you. Humminbird is a solid company with a great product. Been using mine since this video and really love it!
The Helix is a really solid unit. And I bought the ice kit so I love using all year long. Been couple years and still no issues. Your kayak would like one :)
@@BryanProkuski it's cool that it has the dual purpose. I already have the ice fishing flasher but it wont work on the yak. The Helix 5 looks solid, if I decide not to get the 7 I'll probably go with this unit.
Good informative video. Is this good for salt water? Is it mapped already for my Local area.? Can I record my fishing grounds that I catch the most fish ? Thx for the video
Thank you Zack. I would like to think salt water wouldn't be any different but may want to research that as I am in MN. It does come with base maps of the US and depth. You can buy a chip for ft by ft depth. And yes you can mark your fishing grounds.
Does this unit tell you your speed??? I'm looking at purchasing this unit i wasn't to impressed with the lowrance hook2 4x I bought it glitches out moving or even with motor running but it was also only $99
Yes it does. But does not come with high speed transducer so mine loses speed maybe 10-15mph and higher. Which doesnt bother me. Otherwise no glitches.
Hey Robin, No issues or complaints. I am a bass fisherman so mainly up shallow fishing though and don't use finder much but when i need it Its awesome. I haven't got too crazy with dialing in the settings yet but just realize it has auto chart live which says it on the box but for some reason I only thought the 7 and up had the feature so going be trying that out. It comes with a standard contour base map for lakes which is nice if dont want to get a chip right away. Other than that, didn't use it ice fishing this year. Never got around to buying the transducer. Hoping to next season. If you have any questions just let me know.
@@BryanProkuski I loose all of them, seems like it goes back to factory settings, but I will try and set them and write them down and turn it off and see what or if I loose them, I will let you know, thanks for answering my question.
Hey Alexey - The rotating base was already on my boat from a previous fish finder I removed and put the Helix 5 on. Not sure where it was from but I found one on amazon looks the same. Here is the link: amzn.to/2or6n5T
Awesome! You should love it, Still have no issues with mine. Actually just found out this model has Auto Chart live which I just never realized it did. Thought for some reason the 7 and up were the only models with it. So im stoked to try that out!
I'm in the fence if I should get this or the Garmin striker4 (portable). But I'm planning on using it on small rivers etc (small boat/kayak) I don't know how much it will drink battery life if I were to go portable with this unit
Not familiar with the Garmin 4 but looking online its quite a bit cheaper then this unit so might be a selling point. But for battery life im not sure how long it lasts portable, but they do make those new lithium batteries that seem to hold up well. I know the 7 really eats up battery, so I have heard.
Fishing With Bryan Prokuski, the power draw is listed as 600 mA/h (although it says 650 mA/h on Amazon). This means that it will last approximately 10 hours on a 12 volt battery that has 7 Amps (7000 mA). 7000 A divided by 650 mA/h equals about 10 hours.
Hey sorry for late response, you probably already purchased one but I havent used my DI as much as Id like, but is nice to have for 2d and DI side by side to compare. Do you need it, no, you be fine with out it on this unit.
Bryan, great video thanks for the info..been looking for the length of the transducer...so thank you for showing us it! Question, it's been a year, how do you like it? Does it freeze at all? I am looking to purchase one for my kayak and having a hard time because there are sooo many diff ones! Does it come with maps of the lake pre-installed or US-coastal? I didn't see any contour lines, does it have that?
Hey Kali, your welcome, glad you enjoyed it. I have had no issues, freezing or complaints so far. It does come with a pre-installed base map with contour lines and then you can purchase the lake chip if you want more detailed contours. I do use it a lot on that feature. Also just realized it has auto chart live which I will be trying out soon. Let me know if any other questions.
Fishing With Bryan Prokuski is it ok to leave the fish finder mount on the kayak after it’s been loaded on the car and traveling? I understand the fish finder itself should be taken down but do you think it’s important to disconnect the plugs on the back and take down the accessories (fish finder mount or rod holder etc)?
It is a 5in screen. Hints Helix 5. Each model is size of the screen. Smallest of Helix but works just fine. But if you got the money the bigger screen is nice.
Dang you fish in some deep water lol.... The unit says its capable up to 1,500ft so it should work. I would probably contact their support for this one.
The standard or base map as they call it shows contour lines for every 5 or 10 which is nice but if you get the lake chip you get a very detailed map with ft to ft lines for spot on spot location.
@@BryanProkuski well i was hoping both, but i guess the transducer more importantly. U think I could stick it on so? I want to be able to remove it without leaving any holes for when I sell my boat. Thanks
@@dewmanc.s.i.8700 So if you hit view and dont see DI or DI in simulator mode? Ya something weird is up. If bought from reputable source might worth checking on.
I had the same problem and called suport. They said that an internal comparator and they said it will work in real mode (it does i tested it) and they let me keep it and gave a half redund. If you didnt buy it straight from them i dont know if they will help though. Good luck!
