I can really empathize with the statement, "LET ME DIE IN MY SLEEP, JACKASS!" That speaks to me.

Holy shit, why doesn't everyone just have a kevlar blanket. Your team leader could say something like "autobots roll out" and everyone rolls into a cocoon where they remain until they become Kevlar butterflies.

It continues to baffle and frustrate me how our military has had to relearn so many lessons about asymmetrical warfare. It's been a major component of practical experience for sustained ground operations since Korea.

That reminds me of a saying; "Everyone's gangsta until the cockroach starts flying."

I have slept trough stupid shit but the two things that will wake me stupid easy are earthquakes and air raid siren drills that happen every 1st saturday of every month here. And i don't mean earthquakes wake me i wake up about 30 seconds before an earthquake even starts and its always like i'm wide awake and it happens even on minor ones ever since we had a few major earthquakes hit this area two years in a row about the same time of year each time a few years back. They were bad enough that we had aftershocks for months so my sleep was kinda fucked.

While I've never worn the military version, the best way I can think of to describe the feeling of wearing a Kevlar vest is that it's a little bit like wearing one of those lead aprons they give you at the hospital or the dentist's office when they take X-rays. The only difference is that a Kevlar vest is lighter, but it also wraps around you fully. So if someone can imagine wearing a lighter, wrap-around version of a lead apron with holes for your arms, that's roughly what it feels like.

I had a flip clock as a kid. Then again, I was *born* in the '80s. Oh, and my little brother, when he was *barely a teen,* mind you, got a couple of old hi-fi speakers and a wife cutter and *spliced the speakers into his alarm clock* so it'd blare loud enough to wake him up. Damn near woke the entire *county,* too.

the thing is and as a programmer i can say this is not only with engineers, if you develop any kind of system your thinking how you want it to be used and you always think in that pattern and it becomes really difficult to think from a different perspective unless you know how to force your self in to doing that. so the engineers will think of one issue and come up with a solution which seems acceptable and then think how people should be using it and always think that way unless someone not involved looks at it and points at the obvious. its in a lot of ways like tunnel vision where you focus on one thing very specific and in this case its a specific way of thinking you focus on and anything that requires you to think different you wont realize because it wont ever come to mind on its own.

Zack's story about getting complacent about mortars then almost getting hit by one reminds me of General John Sedgwick a Union general who noticed his men were ducking to avoid shots from Confederate sharpshooters 1000 yards away and said "Why are you dodging like this? They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance!" He was then shot in the head and killed by said sharpshooters. Sometimes god/fate/the universe whatever you want to call gives you reminders not to get cocky or complacent in Sedgwick's case it was a fatal luckily for Zack and all of us his was not.

Maybe it has crossed the head of the engineer but got shot down by the contractor (aka the military) the 1st usb was going to be reversible but the engineers were told no to save money.
