This was a really fun trip for me. First time actually catching herring with a cast net. Couldn't have asked for a better day!
Check out Keith's Blog www.thelostanchovy.com/
and his RU-vid channel • Four Day Herring Hunti...
Recently fully stocked up on New Beanies for these chilly remaining days of winter along with some other things.

I spent a year in Sweden as an exchange student. Herring is so big there! Pickled, in cream sauce, etc. Only, I never had them fresh! Would love to try them one day! I love them in cream sauce and pickled. Which was saying something for a 16 yo at the time! Learned to eat all kinds of foods since then, and I know, that is a good thing! Thank you, for an impressive show!

I learned from my good friend Robert Cerny, to eat pickled herring in wine sauce at 12 midnight on new years eve in 1968, for good luck and $ fortune in the coming year. It's worked very well, I am 75 now and have a net worth of over $2M! Try it!

Spot burning leads to increased pressure on the environment, not just the fish population. It means more trash, more crushed mussels, more plants trampled on, in what maybe was a more pristine spot that fewer, more responsible anglers used. There's plenty of public places the city, county, or state list for beginners to find fishing spots.

Electrical tape weaved around the weights keeps the net from closing too early. As soon as the net hits the water, it starts closing, especially when there is a little tension on the line. I've got one arm and have been throwing nets for 30 years.

In the Philippines we dry herring. afterwards you can grill or fry them. but whats best with it is what we call paksiw, it's boiling it with vinegar, ginger and tomatoes until the vinegar is almost in a saucy consistency and the herring bones are soft.. dip with chili lemon and fish sauce..eat it with rice..

Drowning is biggest safety risk for waterfowl hunters and fishermen on the water- consider making a "no waders" rule on the boat. its one thing to rescue a 200lb person, and a another to try and rescue them with another 200lb of water in their waders.

Herring (nishin) used to run in large numbers in Otaru, Hokkaido near Sapporo. They barreled them and used them for fertilizer. These days the runs are small but fresh nishin is a wonderful sushi fish. I did have a frozen nishin for breakfast and it wasn't nearly as good. I also tried nishin sushi at the airport...also not as good as the really fresh sushi-ya in Otaro. Im a fan and intend on catching fresh herring in WA state soon. Love your show.

Atlantic herring is fattier then the pacific herring and therefore better suited for raw eating. I grew up in Holland and had no idea it was raw till my mom told me. After getting past that idea I went right back to enjoying them green herring. Pickled herring is also good if raw herring is not available. Great video.

Glad to see you guys enjoying herring as a food fish. It has a bad reputation for being fishy and not freezing well, perpetuated mostly by people who have never tried it. Breading and frying is a crowd-pleaser, and it also makes great ceviche, believe it or not.

I'm surprised that Herring is considered to be a 'bait' fish in the States, as it is a very healthy oily fish to eat. Tthough it has lost popularity since the 1970's here in the UK, herring has often been eaten. When cold-smoked, we call them 'kippers' and again, though they've lost popularity, they are thought of as a breakfast food or tea-time treat. I personally don't like kippers, and have never tried unsmoked herring, but I do know Mum and Dad liked kippers. Mind you, seeing the size of the first fish you caught, perhaps I shouldn't be surprised at all. The Herring in the UK are only landed if they are at least two or three times that size. As they have a lot of pin bones in them, they need to be a good size to make them a worthwhile fish to prepare and eat!

@@MK-qb5qv I often see something called 'Rollmop' Herring in the chilled fish section in our supermarkets, which I believe is something similar. As I said, herring was once very popular here in the UK, or perhaps I should say England, because I don't know if the other three UK nations have followed the same trend. I believe kippers are still quite popular, as is Herring Roe, but the fresh fish itself isn't eaten so much now, as far as I can tell. I suspect it comes down to a familiar tale: herring was over fished round our shores, the stocks crashed and for some time, Herring wasn't fished to allow their numbers to recover.. By the time they had, a generation had grown up without eating it, and forgotten about it.It can be a fiddly fish to prepare and cook, and being an oily fish, gets strong tasting and 'fishy' as it gets older. These days, people want fish they can just shove in the oven to cook, or better still, get it from the fish and chip shop, and they've lost the taste for Herring and other oily fish...
