Maiev Shadowsong’s hunt for Illidan Stormrage is a key story in Warcraft lore, marked by duty, obsession, and relentless pursuit.
Origins and Imprisonment
Maiev was a priestess of Elune who became the leader of the Watchers after the War of the Ancients. The Watchers' primary duty was to guard dangerous prisoners, the most significant being Illidan Stormrage. Imprisoned for 10,000 years beneath Mount Hyjal, Illidan was transformed into a demon after consuming the Skull of Gul'dan to fight the Burning Legion, leading to his incarceration by his own brother, Malfurion Stormrage.
Escape and Pursuit
During the Third War, Tyrande Whisperwind released Illidan, hoping to use his powers against the Burning Legion. Illidan’s subsequent actions led to his exile by Malfurion. Enraged by his release, Maiev began a relentless hunt to recapture him. Her pursuit spanned across Kalimdor, Lordaeron, and into Outland, driven by a deep-seated belief that Illidan was a grave threat to Azeroth.
Outland and Final Confrontation
In Outland, Illidan allied with the naga and blood elves, becoming more powerful and elusive. Maiev’s pursuit became an obsession, leading her to extreme measures. She finally captured Illidan with the help of Akama but was soon betrayed and imprisoned. She escaped and continued her hunt, culminating in a final confrontation at the Black Temple. Joined by heroes from Azeroth, Maiev confronted and defeated Illidan, delivering the final blow herself.
Aftermath and Legacy
With Illidan’s defeat, Maiev found herself without purpose, struggling with her identity. Though she briefly resumed her duties among the night elves, her uncompromising nature led to conflicts. Illidan’s resurrection during the Legion invasion forced Maiev to reluctantly ally with him, recognizing the necessity of his powers.
