FUN FACT: The production didn't have access to a real Typhoon class submarine, so they built an above-the-waterline mock-up by getting a ship yard to turn a bunch of huge sea barges upside down, weld them together and add a conning tower and dressing it up. They did a pretty amazing job, really.

It doesnt hit you, until after you've seen the movie, that in this scene you realize, hes actually taking in one last look, knowing hes not returning.

This scene changed my life. 33 years after watching this for the first time I am retiring the Navy having commanded a submarine for more than 4 years!

Who still get goosebumps watching the opening scene of Red October after all these years?

Rest In Peace Sean Connery, it’s time, time indeed.

this scene always gives me the chills. Especially when they zoom out and you finally see the size of the submarine he's on

R.I.P Captain, you'll always be missed.

The music pipes up, the camera pans back, and everyone in the audience found themselves thinking, "I want one of those hats."

The last day of October.

Still my favourite movie opening. The reveal of the size of the submarine, combined with the music is just too epic.

When I think of Sean Connery this is the first scene I think of. The closeup on his face, his voice, the soundtrack. RIP

One of my favorite openings of all time. No music, no puns, no action. Just the sound of the cold Arctic wind blowing across the hills leading to a Russian chorus saying goodbye to their mother land in song as they set sail into the unknown future and into the arms of the sea. Epic....

-No shacky cam.

That's James Bond...as a Captain of the Soviet Navy...and everyone believed it!

Never has the sight of a submarine been more majestic than in this scene. Never.
