We're big shooting fans at Bassington's and here we look which wellies are the best all-rounders for the great outdoors in our Hunter Boots vs Le Chameau review. Two great brands but you need to consider your activity level and whether style/comfort or ruggedness and longevity are most important. We know which boots we'd choose but what do you think, Hunter or Le Chameau?

A very fair review I must say. I have a pair of la chameau, whereas my brother uses hunter. The achilles heels of la chameau wellies is the ankle part. Not good for a long, intense walk, but so comfortable to wear.

I agree that the Hunters offer more support but my Hunters have not even lasted 18months and have split in a number of places, my Le Chameau are so comfortable and have lasted over 3 years now.

Hi Bassington's, Unfortunately both of my last two pairs of Hunter Wellingtons, the sole split. And my local shop does not stock them now because of this. I bought my first pair of Hunters in 1985 and they lasted an age. I can only assume that they are now being produced cheaper somewhere? Disappointing and should be addressed.

Same here I had to get 3 new pairs sent by hunter and they were all faulty out of the bud there quality standard has really gone downhill.

Hunter are now made almost exclusively in China. La Chameau are made in Casablanca, Marocco. That alone makes me not go with Hunters.

Have you tried Le Chameau Saint Hubert boots? They are leather lined. They don't have the gusset but fit snuggly. Because of the leather lining they feel far more substantial and have noticeably more ankle support than the Vierzon version. I have had both Hunters and the Vierzon version of Le Chameau in tha past and in my opinion the Saint Huberts are better than both.

I notice there is plenty of scope with the LeC gusset - but the neoprene only goes down so far. Should I get an XL or cut the gusset further down? Got these for my dad - as I was told they were comfy for walking on concrete all day - but needs to fit a boiler suit in there too! Thanks.
@Bassingtons
@Bassingtons 2 года назад
Do not cut the gusset! if find you need a more width, then buy the size up and wear an extra pair of socks!
@jimuck96
@jimuck96 2 года назад
@@Bassingtons ok. I thought weird the neoprene is only cut 2" but the gusset is c.6". I'll order up some XL calf ones.

I have had my balmorals for 3 years now - haven’t missed a beat. Mine are neoprene lined and have a gusset. I think people form opinions based on trends - had many people tell me to buy some ‘decent’ wellies but I can’t fault the hunters at all.

Totally agree, this is why I have recently bought a new pair!

Hunter was out of the competition a long time ago, if your looking for good wellingtons it's between Le Chameau and Aigle. Hunter are just a bit naff

For me, the Hunter would be my choice all day long! I have never seen a gamekeeper in a pair of Le Chameau's, but I have seen plenty of gamekeeper's in Hunters! This fact speaks volumes!

@@Bassingtons the old Made in Scotland hunters: yes! The Made in China ones are utter crap. I thought had just been unlucky when my first MiC developed a crack, but now my second pair isn't waterproof anymore either. Within two years of purchase. I've now switched to Le Chameau.

@@BassingtonsI’m a farmer and most of the farmers I know wear chameau. I wear mine everyday, all day, drive in them, did the three peaks of wales in them recently which was 55km in a day. 98% of the footwear I use are this single pair of chameaus. They’re 2 years old now and show no sign of breaking. From what I’ve seen, hunters have just become a brand based on branding alone, not quality.

These two brands are in different leagues. It’s like comparing a Rolls Royce to a Ford and I’m sure most people can work out which is which!

Hunters are mostly made in China, and have been since 2008. Back then it was possible to kill a pair of Hunters within 6 months, the quality was so bad. They were produced by the Beijing Patcus factory who were Hunter's subcontractors, and the rubber formulation was all wrong - not enough latex, and way too much filler such as clay (yes, really), resulting in wellies that were too rigid and unable to resist UV for very long, hence premature cracking and splitting. They are still using a similar formula today, so you're basically paying loads for something that doesn't last long. The only game in town is between Le Chameau and Aigle. Unfortunately, Le Chameau was taken over by Marwyn, a British investment group, in 2012, and British management has been cutting costs ever since. Marwyn paid £15 million for the brand and were reportedly still losing money until recently. There is a difference between wellies made before 2012, and those made after, and I notice that it's the boots made after 2016 in particular that get the most complaints about durability. There is only one Le Chameau factory and that's in Morocco - it has been making boots since the late 1940s. The Moroccan lads do a good job, to be fair, but they do have to do it under the British management obsession with cost-cutting. There is always a possibility that production could move to China at any given time. Remember that it's the rubber formulation which is critical; it's very very easy to get it wrong, as Hunter have. Hunter are profitable because they have reinvented themselves as a designer label, so all they have to do is tweak the colour palette (16.4 million shades of colour) and the fashionistas will keep buying, even though the basic product is fundamentally unfit for purpose.

I've a pair of Hunter Balmoral, 4 months old, split and leaking already. They replaced a pair of LeC that were 20+ years old.

Hunter just aren't aren't quality they used to be. They rot through or split very easily now. Not worth the money at all. Had 3 pairs split within a year. Awful. Not tried Le Chameau so can't comment on those.
