Hunter x Hunter is the Perfect Shonen... Except for One Thing 

You hit the nail on the head. Hunter x Hunter is a genuine masterclass and it's my favorite show in general. It's so well crafted and we can all hope Togashi's health improves.

Best characters and character development in Shonen (especially villains), best power system, best approach for deep and complex themes, best soundtrack (Kingdom of Predators duuh), best love story in anime, crazy amount of details and subtle elements, amazing world building, exciting and unique fights, top quality dialogues .. peak Shonen for sure.

I love that with Nen, and a well curated power, a weaker person can fight a stronger person and potentially win. But if that creativity isn’t there then it’s just a repeat of Cheetu.

Hunter x Hunter is great... IF you've seen more traditional shonens. The reason why it's so interesting when you consider other stories in the genre is because it actually takes some steps to make sure it doesn't fall into the same trappings of other stories like Naruto or Dragon Ball. It subverts expectations and changes the roster on a regular basis precisely to keep things fresh.

This anime's power system has limits and it's perfect! The transitions between arcs is flawless, it's connected! There's no disconnecting.

Of all the shonen anime I have watched,HxH has the best opening arc .Hunter exams had many smart and intriguing elements.

You are the only person ive seen who's perfectly summed up the issues with one piece's worldbuilding-ans by extension, the issues with other shonen battle series' worldbuilding-highlighting the same aspects that make Hunter x Hunter's so great in contrast. A lot of people are under the misconception that good worldbuilding is about depth, but it isn't. Its about cohesion. Cohesion between the world and itself (locations and other locations), cohesion between the world and characters, and most importantly between the world and the themes of the story. One piece's worldbuilding feels fragmented-while its quite literally a world of separated islands, this issue mostly arises from the world's lackof presence on the characters and themes. Hunter x Hunter's worldbuilding feels so much better because the world is properly used as a setting to not only explore the intended atmosphere but also to raise these incredible characters. Theres a certain logic that governs the world and everything within it, and these self made restrictions are governed into every aspect of HxH including the power system. On the other hand One Piece is like a jigsaw puzzle that hasnt been assembled yet; a bunch of misconnected parts that dont flow very well at all. From multiple power systems that have almost no relation to each other to characters that arent produced from the world they inhabit but feel rather thrown in for the sake of plot

Good video man, largely agree with everything. If I had to really dig for a problem with Hunter, I guess I’d say sometimes the lack of long term planning can lead to abrupt endings, or characters feeing disposable (they come in for an arc but they end up disappearing from the narrative soon after). Having said that, it’s probably one of the biggest strengths of the series as well. The way that the narrative can shift dramatically in tone and content from arc to arc makes it really stand out, and highlights the creative aspects of Togashi’s writing style.

My favorite character is the 1999 Killua. His development was much different than the newer one, you can't help but be on edge for what's next for him

A series doesn't need an end for it to be 10/10. Interestingly I originally gave the part which the anime covered a 10/10 but after reading the rest of the manga I downgraded that to 9/10, as the story later on was way better, my standards got higher, the part where the manga is a 10/10 for me.

Hunter X Hunter doesn’t best the pants off One Piece for world building. They’re on equal footing. And that is a huge compliment for Hunter X Hunter. And vice versa.

Absolutely top-tier manga. Setting it as a bar for other shounen would be unfair. Favorite character is probably Kurapika. Followed perhaps by Meruem and Neferpitou.

Before I go ranting, I wanna say GREAT video! :) But when it comes to world building in any series you have to include not only the places they are in or go to but the world the author built. Hence the name "World Building". Which includes things like the power system the world revolves around, the government, and the worlds history and for One Piece that inludes the regular pirates, the warlords, the rebellion and the of course the emperors which all play a HUGE role in the story. Whether its someone like Koby developing his character, the new generation stepping up to the emperors or how each leader of many of the islands like alabasta, choppers island, fishmans island, and many others (i forgot their names lol) are under rule of the world government directly, not to be confused with the marines that work for and with the world government. Thats not even including so many mysteries One Piece has to offer. Not to say Hunter X Hunter doesn't do good regarding these topics (I think HxH does great ESPECIALLY in the power system and the mysteries) but One Piece definitely does better, especially considering One Piece had way more time to expand on it, otherwise I think HxH could have been on that same level. Before people assume Im bias I just wanna say I love HxH WAY more than i do One Piece even being caught up in the manga for both series.

If Hunter x Hunter had a good ending/final arc, it would be fighting with FMA;B for the title "Best Anime of All Time". And don't get me wrong, FMA;B is one of my favourite anime of all time, but Hunter x Hunter is an amazing anime and I can never get enough of it, the opening especially. Also Togashi must be famous for the endings of his two masterpieces. (Hunter x Hunter and Yu Yu Hakusho)

hxh is still 10/10 for me ,there are no bad arcs start to end,and of course my fav power system in all of fiction, but gotta disagree with world building take i mean i kinda understand your argument infact that's the reason i love it even more ,that makes the world feel more vast and tangible,also everything do connect at the end but one thing i will definitely say hxh writing is bit more consistent compare to one piece

Jujutsu Kaisen and Hunter x Hunter are my favorite manga/animes ever, I first started with JJK and i really loved it and people kept telling me HxH has similarities, so I gave it a whirl and my god am I not disappointed, just sad it might not get finished.

I agree it 100% is well thought out and like you said the arcs all go well together but especially post time skip it is the exact same for One Piece. Whole Cake Island is 4 arcs away but Luffy makes enemies with Big Mom in Fishman Island. They go to Punk Hazard and destroy the smile factory which makes doflamingo mad, who they defeat, and he supplies for Kaido so the crew then goes to Wano. Good video, HxH is goated, but to put One Piece’s world building down is a hot take if you really look into it. There is a reason for each and every island they sail to.

Actually love this vid and I agree whole heartedly. Anyone who sleeps in HxH isn't really seeing the whole picture yet. I feel like the most difficult part of HxH is the Chimera Ant arc because its so different compared to what comes before but the payoff for sticking through is more than worth it! Goated Shonen. I think there is a difference between best world building and best world building that actually flows into the plot (and I say this as someone who has always like HxH more than OP), but OP's sheer World Building is better only in the sense that there is virtually no meaningless characters, everyone you meet has a detailed background, everywhere you go has an entire history and situations going on that we always tend to learn about. So where in 99% of mangas you come across a random place, with random people and that's it. You come across a spoiled boy acting bratty and he will fall face first in mud and never be seen again, but in One Piece even that kid goes on an entire journey (which World Building isn't just "this place and that place" but the people and their stories) HXH is just as quick to disregard places that the main characters are no longer at as any other anime. Like Zushi is a perfect example. In HXH, he played his role and that's basically it. Not even sure if he ever made a cameo after the Heaven's Arena arc. but in One Piece, characters that seem so absurdly small will show up again in some way, even if it's just showing people throughout the world (that we've visited) reacting to Luffy getting his first big bounty for example. Heck even someone like Wapol manages to show up like a thousand chapters after the arc he was relevant in because he's part of the world and it makes sense why he would show up (and this kind of thing happens all the time) in HXH, that kind of thing is reserved for A-list people like the big 5 or the phantom troupe, everyone else just basically shows up in their arc.

Peak shonen would be the best representation of what shonen has to offer, that could be one piece, chainsaw man, or jujitsu kaisen Hxh story hasn’t ended and even worse there are way to many plot lines that haven’t been shown in almost 10 years. I’m not saying it’s bad the story and characters are peak of course but the anime and manga sucks

saying one piece worldbuilding isnt better because it's presented by "contrived exposition, and the straw hats dont care about the information" is an invalid argument, you don't even explain what the contrived exposition is, in my interpretation these exposition are presented by other characters pov, what is ace doing? what are whitebeard and shank discussing? what are the 5 elders doing? This makes the world building strong by showing many plots are simultaneously happening. Strawhats not caring doesnt make the world building weak, would you say game of thrones, known for having one of the strongest world building is weak because jon snow cares very little about the politic in westeros or essos? Characters not caring about the info imo makes these characters real cos not every character is going to be invested in the same goal.

The one thing Naruto/Shippuden has over Hunter X Hunter is the music. Wind, Blue Bird, Empty Heart. Wind is the biggest reason I got hooked from the start on Naruto, I still get triggered when I hear it. The Fear & Loathing song is the only music in Hunter that comes close.

hunter hunter is almost perfect, the only arc i would have a few bad thing to say have also many masterpiece moment and in the end, yes this the only not perfect arc, but it still the best by far. you got to episode 116 you think, that's the best episode so far, then you got to 131, ok no this is the best episode i've ever seen, 135, i was wrong, this one is the best ever. ok well, migth be my personal opinion for 116, but 131 and 135, pretty much everyone agree. if i would have to give the title of perfect anime, it would be fmab, not my favorite since despite having really good moment and a really good story, i don't feel like something reach the masterpiece level, but it is flawless, i wouldn't change anything.

I agree if you take your favorite anime and compare it to HxH you’ll notice that HxH is absent of all those goofy anime tropes that can be and usually are really annoying. Hunter X Hunter is my favorite anime and I think it’s the best anime. I even love the Greed Island arc. I think it’s near perfect. And if they had fought Genthru before they had the volley ball match I think a lot of it’s detractors would probably agree. As it is, I still think it’s totally awesome. Others have complaints about the Cimera Ant arc, but after the completion of the arc I think these issues dissolve into irrelevant. Especially the problem people have with the detour to Meteor City. It might feel a bit left field during the arc but after it’s all done it’s great to be able to check in on our favorite misfits to see how they handle the Ants. It’s an interlude and one well with existing.

Gon and Hisoka's "brotherly" relationship huh?.. That's a bit weird lol. Togashi makes some of the best fights. Yu Yu Hakusho had me pretty damn scared when Kuwabara fought Elder Togoro. Togashi is amazing at making stories where you have no wtf is going to happen.

Hotter take. Toriko has the best world building. The villains are overrated. I think Hisoka is just gross because of the kid stuff. The bomber is a one-note evil for the sake of evil character. The royal guards are just Meruem D riders. Protagonists. Because the anime skipped the Kite introduction from the manga Gon snapping at Kite's death seemed out of left field. Kurapika is underutilized and hollowwithouthis goal to kill the phantom troop. Leorio is supposed to be invested in the main cast because of what? A few days together. Biscuit is just Lolicon bullshit. Killua and Meruem are great all around. Most of the phantom troop. But more so from a bad ass perspective. Not a rich, deep character building one.

For me Hunter X Hunter as it ended in the 2011 anime is quite complete on its own. It started out as Gong looking for his estranged dad and ends with a father-son heart-to-heart about the beauty of unexpected treasures in their respective journeys. If I have to come up with a list of top anime/manga endings, Hunter X Hunter 2011's EP148 ending's got to be in the Top 3. It's just so satisfying, thematically complete, moving and inspiring all at the same time. The Dark Continent arc which might never be finished is really just Hunter X Hunter 2 with new main characters. So I am not salty at all at its current state. But yes I agree with you that it's still not a 10/10 even though it's practically the golden standard of Shonen (BTW I've been watching Fist of the North Star, Saint Seiya and DBZ since about 1990). For me that's mainly due to pacing issues (e.g. I cannot imagine following the original run of the palace invasion episodes on a weekly basis because even binging those episodes can be quite tiresome).

HxH is my best anime.. Eventhough it disappoint me big time.. its still has balance footing in fights , .. cos of the power system.. for characters wer in some shounen past villain that are somehow still in the story are not that relevant..

Defs earned a sub with this video. HxH is peak shonen, the only shows I see are on the same level of story telling and characters are JJK, FMAB and OP. Naruto could've been peak too but some of the insufferable characters, ass pulls, plot holes and the ending ruined it for me.

Hxh is probably the best of the big old shonens. One piece is just too childish, plot armor heavy and nakama power out of the ass. Also great character design let's just give everyone big balloon tits awesome lol. It's as bad as dragon ball where boss fights take 60 episodes. Of course the manga will be better but yeah. The only thing worthwhile with one piece is seeing how it will end and if they fuck that up it's honestly a 1/5 show. Much the same can be said for naruto and bleach and i just found them very cringy to begin with. New bleach and naruto also seems to pander very hard to zoomers as well. I guess fair enough that would be the right target and age audience i suppose. There are still plotholes and flaws in hxh too though nothing is perfect. Even shows like legend of the galactic heroes has flaws. Nen being a secret yet pretty much all known is a big one, or how the hunter association acts and works overall ,or how the spiders are not dealt with even though they clearly cause enough havoc that the powers that be including the hunter association surely would have needed to deal with them. Nen was kind of iffy at the start just like haki was at start of one piece as well if we are being honest and both were refined and incorporated better later on as the shows go further. Another show that has a great power system and fights that rival hxh would be world trigger. Highly recommended.

Ill give you two more reason as to why it isnt perfect: 1. The pacing. It gets quite slow sometimes to the point where I had to put it in 1.5x speed. The Zoldyck family arc and The chimera ant arc is the prime example of this. 2. (Anime only problem) The animation is passable. Apart from Gon vs Hisoka, we never get a tightly choreographed fight scene. And needless to say, the compositions could have been better.

I'm glad someone said it. It is a serious flaw in Oda's narrative storytelling, which is otherwise incredible, that Luffy doesn't give a shit about the political implications of his own actions. He just rams through the setting overthrowing governments and redirecting the course of history like an extremely autistic toddler without a care in the world or a minute of self-reflection and it's infuriating.
