On this episode of Falling Tide TV, Ben Hymel takes my brother Drew and myself on a squirrel hunt in the basin in south Louisiana. We were lucky enough to each harvest a black squirrel as well as some regular fox squirrels.

@@fallingtidetv They are just a black coloured Grey Squirrel. Its a genetic mutation I believe. I too am from southern Ontario and typically the squirrels around the towns are black and you get more actual grey ones in more rural areas but that is not set in stone.

We got a group that meets up for a long weekend of squirrel hunting every year in February after deer season has closed. We hunt hard Friday Saturday and Sunday and later in the spring we get together again and cook e, in a big stew we call slosh. It’s cooked in a 30 gallon cast iron pot on open flames. We put all our deer leg shanks, rabbits all kind of meats and veggies in it and it’s some kinda fine

I hunt squirrel and l learn that. If there is a black squirrel in your property, it will attract more squirrel into your property. That black squirrel is very attracting to others squirrel. Every time that black squirrel came out, others squirrel will chase and follow him/her everywhere. If you see a black squirrel in a property, it's a guarantee there are more population of squirrel. No black squirrel, your squirrel population are down.

It’s been a long time since I’ve hunted squirrels with a shotgun. I prefer a 22 rifle but I’ve taken them with a 22 pistol and a 9mm pistol. The pistols give them a little bit more of a chance but not much. It’s all the pellets when you cook them is why I don’t like the shotgun.

Nate, the US has more trees and wood land now than in 1920, we have 90% fewer wild fires and 2023 was the mildest wildfire season we had in 20 years or more. All very easily verified. So how about some balance with your habitat loss comment.
@fallingtidetv
@fallingtidetv 11 месяцев назад
Not sure where you’re from but Louisiana loses a football field of land every 100 minutes. We are hunting in south Louisiana. I’ve seen habitat loss in my own short lifetime that makes me wonder if where we were hunting will even be there in 20 years. I’ve seen oak ridges thriving, turned to wasteland after a hurricane. I don’t care what the research says, I’ve seen this with my own 2 eyes.
@fallingtidetv
@fallingtidetv 11 месяцев назад
And I’m not disputing you, you’re probably 100% correct on a National scale, however louisiana is struggling majorly with habitat loss.
@michaelcope2329
@michaelcope2329 11 месяцев назад
I live in Lafayette and have my entire life, and actually am working for LA CPRA on several large scale coastal restoration projects. Your right about the loss of coastline, but thats not what you said. You just made a blanket statement about habitat loss, maybe a better choice of words would have to speak directly to coastal erosion which while it does qualify for a type of habitat loss, is a very specific type. Again, what you said was not type, kind or location specific, you painted with a very broad brush. Just habitat loss or loss of habitat is what you said. As hunters and conservationist we have enough battling environmental activist and anti-hunters. We need to choose our words very closely and know in specific and great detail that of which we speak. Especially when someone has an audience and footprint online and is considered by default and "Influencer". So your choice of words and the context in which you use them are more important than others. Might I suggest doing an online search for an old article out of National Geographic magazine "Hunters for the Love the of the Land". Nat Geo is not a right wing publication so them highlighting and giving credit to hunters for being conservationist and how much they do financially, through volunteer work on projects, etc., conserving land and wildlife. Speaks volumes about how much hunters are doing to make things better for the land and the wildlife that calls it home. Thats just a start, do some research, NWTF, NDA, Rocky Moutain Elk Foundation, Trout Unlimited, CCA, Wild Sheep Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, Delta Waterfowl, etc. Look at the money raised, the projects completed, the projects planned, the positive results of our efforts. We have enough with environmental activist and anti's and a world that is without question focused on the negative. Highlight the positive man, there's so much of it. Our message needs to be positive, sure acknowledge the problems but at the same time don't neglect to the positives. It will tell you with factual verification that things are getting better. We have more land in "woods" as we like to say herein the South, now than we did in 1920. Many species of game are increasing in number and with the ones that are facing challenges, were working hard as hunters to remedy that and turn it around. Buck up man, things are getting better, the sky isn't falling. Coastal Erosion here will be moderated. Unfortunately it will never be fixed. The US Army Corp of Engineers has spent billions of dollars locking the Mighty Mississippi River in place. It was never meant to stay in one place, Rivers are meant to meander and ultimately keep improving themselves to find the quickest and most efficient route to the sea. Out coast was built up through the mouth of the MS turning our coast into an alluvial flood plain. Whereby the mouth of the River at the Gulf would deposit settlement over many years and build up marsh and land area. Once that area built up to a point where the marsh and land mass it created, in turn created resistance to the flow of sediment in the water into the Gulf. Well the River would meander over to the E along our coast and would repeat this process like a child spray a water hose back and forth in a fan like motion. This process kept our coastal marsh and land areas sustained. Given the River is now locked in place, this alluvial process can no longer happen unimpeded like it for the entire history of the world prior to the discovery of the Americas and the development of New Orleans and the US in general. It can and is in the process of being addressed through numerous LARGE Scale projects by both LA CPRA and the Corp of Engineers but in my opinion that will only get us so far back to what and how it was before locking the river in place. Again, we've locked the river in place as we cannot move New Orleans or Baton Rouge, or any of the other Cities and Towns S of I-10. Anyway, enough for now. Remember you are an "influencer". Please choose your words and context in which you use them accordingly. Take care. @@fallingtidetv

@michaelcope2329 I greatly appreciate it. I still think there’s nothing wrong with what I said. I was actually speaking to the amount of work our biologist are doing to help combat the issues we’re facing, so much so that figuring out a gene mutation in fox squirrels probably isn’t high on the priority list. I’m a man of conviction, honesty and integrity. I stand by the things I say, fearless in the face of scrutiny. I’m aware of my following and I welcome the criticism and I appreciate the advice. Thanks
@michaelcope2329
@michaelcope2329 11 месяцев назад
Nate, you were completely right with what you said, my suggestion is just for more back story for a statement like that. Additionally mention the positive, we as hunters, fisherman and conservationist face a lot of outside scrutiny and we as a group need to be armed with the best and most positive knowledge we can. You have the unique position due to your influencer status to help greatly in that area. Show is great and I love the squirrel episode, I love to squirrel hunt. If you ever see a yellow bumper sticker that in black letters says Squirrel Its Whats for Supper. I had those made, I keep about 100 in my truck at all times as people are constantly flaggin me down on the road and asking where I got it. Then I tell em I had it made and ask them if they want 1 or a few for their friends. I've handed out hundreds of em over the years. Anyway congrats on the black squirrel I've been looking for 1 of those for 40+ years and never ran across one. Take Care @@fallingtidetv
