Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

First! I always love getting here early. Its nice to see a 16 gauge getting some attention. These days we can do anything a 16 can do with a light 12 gauge load or a heavy 20 gauge load, but I still think they are great.

I think that is my same exact gun, Ron! I chose it because it is half a pound lighter than the 12 ga. That's a lot when hiking all day. And everyone knows the 16 kills as well as the 12! Covey is going to need a bath after that sojourn. Thanks, Ron!

The terrain is a bit different, but up here I love going grouse hunting in Manitoba and North Western Ontario each year. It's peaceful and relaxing, and even if you don't get a bird, you still got some fresh air, exercise, and let go of the stress. And when you do spot a bird and stalk it for the perfect shot, that's just the cherry on top.

Love the mountains. Just wish the environmental cult earth worshipers would understand that forest service needs to get in and clean up all the downed timber for fire reasons. I've never been in a Norwegian forest, but I hear they are spick and span out there by comparison. Returning to wood-burning for household heat and ash application on private gardens would bring a lot of health back to the population.

I was never lucky enough to hunt grouse in the west. Hunting grouse in Pennsylvania and north to New Brunswick is similar with exception of being done at lower altitudes. In some areas you had a mix of Pheasants, Woodcock and Quail. In other areas you might find Ruff Grouse and Woodcock. However; hunting Grouse meant Grouse in mountain woods and Ringnecks in rolling farm lands. West Virginia and Ohio had good hunting too. A good day hunting for Grouse was counting the flushes. There were fewer shots and Grouse taken than bird’s flushes. Getting a pair of Grouse or limit was a rare occasion for time spent. I figured on walking ten miles for every Grouse I put in my game bag as doing pretty good. Best thing about hunting Grouse is seldom seeing anyone else most days. It doesn’t get any better hunting Grouse alone with just the company of your Dog. As Grouse guns go; I like short barrels and light weight guns; and having a sling on one is even better. I shot two doubles on Grouse in my life; both times using a 20ga. So that is the best gun for me. My second choice is a 28ga. If you are a hardcore Grouse hunter we all have one thing in common. Sitting down for a break sharing your lunch with your dog. Then having a Grouse flushing giving you the best shot of the day with a cup of coffee in your hand. You had pretty good day in your video. I suggest leaving that Yuppie smoothie machine home and eat man food. ✨👏✨🍺🍜

Living in north central British Columbia, the Ruffed Grouse is the most common grouse we see. On occasion a Spruce Grouse is added to the bag. A favourite way to cook them at my place is to cut the meat into bite sized cubes and do them up in good old Shake 'N Bake. The kids call it "grouse nuggets". Maybe it's the lower population (thus lower hunting pressure) around here compared to most places in the US, along with the vast areas of forest but I can safely say that a day's grouse hunting will usually lead to a full daily limit of ten birds. Back when all five kids still lived at home, that was simply putting food on the table. Now that all five are on their own, a few hours out in the afternoon will provide three or four, just right for the wife and myself. Two for dinner that night and leftovers in the fridge for a tasty, memorable snack the next day.

I remember hunting turkeys in n. Arizona with my dad when I was 12. My dad spotted 2 turkeys behind a log with just their heads showing. My dad let me shoot first with my single shot 12ga. Direct hit on one and a single pellet through the head of the second. My dad hurried to put them in the game bag and said we were done hunting. Dad cleaned them in the trailer with the door closed. Cooked them in the fire after dark and then I found out how much I loved the taste of grouse. Yep. 😁

Hi Ron, I've got a question, as a 22 year old searching through any and what seems to be every book I can get my hands on in terms of gunnery, which can be difficult as many in my generation and vicinity seem to be opposed to such an amazing sport, has led to myself to do research to find good books, will you ever do book reviews, namely of books that you think have quality information in them. I've been reading Sharpe, Sharp (with no "e"), Lamark, Forsyth, Baker, Greener, Whelen, Walsh, Stebbins, Caldwell, Ness, I also just bought a book by Askins, as well a book by Ruark, and some others. The reason I ask this, is that you, being a gun writer, would in my reason have some knowledge on gun writers and sportsmen of the past. I've been interested in the loading and usage of certain cartridges and actions. I would appreciate any advice on other writers of long ago, many of which used cartridges and certain actions in their hunts. Many sportsmen it seems of today's time are to busy with gadgets than real skill and it seems so much of the information about guns and cartridges of the present day are made and written by people that have no rightful say in the matter. Ron, I take you as an individual that knows his stuff, that's why I ask. Thank you, for not only presenting a much needed channel on RU-vid, but also answering the questions of your viewers, sincerely CommanderOrange.

What a great video Ron! Even our Black Lab (Wigeon) enjoyed the video. She has never really watched a show like that. I think she spotted your dog hunting and was quite interested. Love your style!

Ron, I’m a big fan and chat with you often on here. Watching you prep that meat and noticed your veins popping then I saw you have zero belly 😳 You exercise often or just will power and food choices?

Such a lovely video. Was out hunting sprucies with the missus yesterday. Rough and wet hiking on Canadian shield and boreal forest north of Yellowknife, but it was fun and successful. That bark chew looks very similar to what our moose do to poplar trees up here. I watched two other grouse hunting videos before yours came up, and both were rampant with muzzle sweeping each other. Sheesh! Always enjoy your videos and demeanor. If you're ever up this way, let me know. Happy hunting!

Mr Spomer,..came here after reading about Covey in my issue of NRA Hunter. Beautiful pic of her on the cover, eyes intent on point and paw up. Have had 8 ESs, working on #9. Good episode. C looks like shes having a ball, in her element.

I believe Covey is a Lewellin Setter.I have 2 right now and had 2 that passed after hunting with them for 16 years.Noses that are amazing and they set the birds if the woods aren't too dry.No dog can set birds in crunchy loud conditions. The Lewellins don't require much training as they are bred for upland bird hunting. I took my Houdini kennel pup out at 6 months and he got me a limit of Ruffs without any problem.Retrieving has to be taught.I had one who would grab the bird if it was flopping but would leave it where it fell.Forced retrieve training is possible if you start early but I never lost any birds because he would lead me to the bird if it fell into heavy cover. They make good companions but need exercise daily of will get antsy and do a lot of barking at any noise. Barking is what they do best, lol.

I found my first big boomer spruce grouse hunting moose the year before last, my dad and I have a 20 gauge "beater" Pointer over under I took for a walk next to the border of a wildlife corridor we'd seen a big bull dissappear into the day before, hoping to call him out. I saw several ruffs and spruce, so the next day I took the shotgun along, and as I didn't have my lab I still hunted across deep moss and the soggy floor of a pine forest in a swampy bottom. Ended up ground swatting a big old cock bird and then tagging one of his two hens, promptly plucked and turned them into camp fare. Good days. I find lots of them in those edges of where swamps, bogs, and creek bottoms meet older pine woods.

I'm in the foothills close to Yosemite and hunted Quail until a few years ago when my back and knees said enough. I kept going down in gauge to get a lighter and lighter gun. My model 42 was about perfect but lacking a bit in our heavy brush. I settled on the Model 12 in 16ga and had a special stock made for it. It turned into my upland gun. Lightweight and plenty of punch! The 16 never became popular in the west but after hunting with one I don't know why?

Beautiful dog Ron. I live and hunt Northeast Washington and I recognize that habitat and I know how hard it is to wingshoot in. I’m actually heading up tomorrow between Preist lake and Sullivan Landon the Wa side looking for Blues but I always end up in Spruce grouse. If you wanna come Spruce grouse hunt I’m your man lol.

The last time I got to hunt ruffed grouse was in Ohio back in 1989. I managed to kill one that we flushed. I took a quick shot at it as it flew though the hardwood forest. I saw exactly where it fell and it took 15 minutes of searching to find it. I stood three feet away from it but could not see it. If somebody wanted to make a good woodland camo imitate a ruffed grouse. We ate it that night for supper. It was very good. Two days later I was in Florida starting a whole new life, which is where I live today.

Ron, What a nice presentation and so well communicated as usual. When I was a youth I thought the only thing worth doing was grouse hunting. These days I have some mobility issues and no dog, so enjoy doing it vicariously through you. The cover certainly was thick. I enjoy seeing Covey work. Thanks Ned Jones P.S. I had read your TriStar side-by-side article in American Hunter but failed to connect it with you. A video presentation would be nice.

I think Covey is deserving of some grouse! I always give my lewellins some of the guts.I also gut the birds before putting into the pouch.Blues and Duskies almost always are found below or above scree rock slopes.Ruffs are usually lower elevation and timbered slopes in the Cascades. Dry conditions will put them into creek ravines which can be hard on the dog. Hiking up above 6k from 2k on a trailhead will wear a dog out unless you keep them on a leash til you get to altitude.Lots of water for the dogs in important, too. I carry a big camel bac if there is no water til almost up to the hunt area. These dogs are water hogs so if you don't give them a drink every half hour they can get heat stroke. On chukars and pheasant, quail they need even more water.I carry a kid pool and fill if so they can jump in and wallow if there isn't a creek or pond available.

If that were an Aspen, I'd think a moose was snacking on some bark! But that must've been an elk rub on a pine.
