As an Iowa resident I would recommend Yellow River state park in Alamakee county. It's directly across the Mississippi river from Buffalo county Wisconsin. 9000 acres. Great trail systems throughout for access too. Very rough country. Lots of spots where us corn fed Iowans just won't walk too. Huge bucks great deer numbers. We kill deer there every year. Also use your points to get an Archery tag. The first week of November is magical. After about November 11th your buck sightings go way way down unless you have a private deer farm. If you hunt that first week of November. you have a better then 50 percent chance of getting a really nice buck. Even on public.

This is great! THank you for showing the "failures". You did it!!!

Oh, we have plenty of failures. Since those are part of hunting, I feel that we should show those struggles, also. Thanks for watching.

At 6:30 when you get up on that pile of brush and it falls, I had to laugh hard because I've been there so many times! What an entertaining video.

Thanks for watching. Glad you liked it. I shot a deer on the way out of Kansas, but I had already dropped off the camera guy, so it wasn't on footage. Lots of bumps, falls, and bad acts on my part during that two weeks of cold and wind.

Welcome to Kansas public Deer hunting...I have found its Bucks in the morning and Does last 20min of evening. Good meat hunting land...big bucks are, well hard to outsmart on public land, somehow they know where public land starts probably the pressure. And then theirs always the guy like you/me who's done Thier homework and setup just before you. l generally walk in about 4 in the morning and sit and Waite for the deer to pushed and be sitting by at least two hours before sunset to hopefully stake out my spot. Unfortunately theirs too many hunters who show no regard to you were Thier first, but that's public land you just have to use other hunters to your advantage....love your shows and have learned plenty....thank you

Been hunting public kansas land my whole life and i wish they would give you a map that has grids on it at every walk in access point so that you and other hunters could mark the area you plan to hunt. I think it would help cut down on people walking up on eachother..... but with that being said i stopped gun hunting because theres to many people switched to bow and think ive come across 4 hunters in 5 years

Randy, first off, I'm a big fan of the show, and love what you do. I'm a native Iowan and a Kansas resident. I too have hunted public ground during 2nd shotgun in Iowa. It's tough. There are bucks, and some big ones, but like your experience in this show, the encounters are fleeting. I would suggest anyone who wants to hunt public for Iowa deer to wait the extra year for an archery season tag and hunt during the rut in early November. During that time you'll get bucks moving through that normally don't use the public property, even though hunting pressure will still be high. That being said, I know your fall schedule is packed and you hunt when you can, just like everyone else. Good luck out there!

Thanks for watching. I have a ton of points in IA. I just need to fit an archery hunt in the schedule.

Very few Deer on public lands... if they are there, look for the thickest stuff on the property. Really helps to have a buddy walking around pushing those brushy spots. Plus the deer know better than to move during the day...

Randy the problem with late season white tail bucks is bedding during the day , mind if I make a suggestion find a place and make a b line to it near the thickest and nastiest brush and use the ground cover as a blind .

Lol just like hunting for a buck in pa! Especially since they started the antler restrictions. Lots of doe and a few bucks that are two small. Your doing great to get a legal buck once every several years. It's a real challenge even on private land
@davidvickers1171
@davidvickers1171 6 лет назад
What I have learned is the more you move around the more it pushes the deer not every day do I see trophy Buck's but I have seen some nice ones , best of luck on any new adventures.

I grew up in eastern Iowa. I never even saw a Deer until I was 16. As an adult I hunted south central Kansas a couple of times. No Deer were harmed by me

Word to the wise... Iowa is northeast of Kansas, not northwest (around 10:40 mark). Great show! I've been trying KS public hunting for a while now, it sucks to not get a buck, but I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that gets skunked :)

Ooops. The cold must have numbed my brain. I had different camera guys for KS and IA. When the KS camera guy left I went out the next morning and shot a buck in KS, but did not have a camera guy with me. In IA we had a very close encounter, but the camera froze and a really nice buck stood there looking at us. Never did get footage of that encounter. Oh well, such is what I ask for when filming. Thanks for watching.

Randy, you ought to come to Maryland and do a public land sika deer hunt. Super fun animals to hunt if you ever get the chance.

Thanks. We do western hunts for native species, with a the occasional midwestern hunt. We have not made it east, and given what we promise to deliver to the network and our sponsors, odds are that we won't get there. Sorry, but thanks for thinking of us.

I live in Iowa want to know whats funny? i dont even deer hunt. There are some really big ones though. I found a 186 in rack and have pictures to prove it. We go out west to hunt elk and everyone out there talks about hunting big whitetail deer in the midwest. Kind of one of those grass is always greener on the other side type of deals.
@Fresh_Tracks

Wish I lived in Iowa to hunt big monster bucks... but you know what's funny, the new world record non typical whitetail buck was shot 5 miles from my house during the 2016 season..

Honestly 2nd season shotgun is one of the worst to be hunting that way. I did it last year and all I saw was orange pushing deer onto private property. Saw a few deer but, thats it unfortunately

Hunters left at lunch and while they’re gone, I killed a buck. NEVER leave until the day is disappearing. All I bring for food is granola bars. That’s all I need and I hunt in the mountains. The number one hunt killer is not going with the gut feeling and second is moving too fast. If you throw your plans out the window and follow that gut, you’ll do much better.
