When a senior in high school, during a skip school day in late spring, my friends skied down the ravine but I was stupid enough to go down on a plastic toboggan. Me and the toboggan soon parted ways and I was lucky, I was able to slide down on my butt and didn't start tumbling. Yeah, I've hiked Tuckerman's, Lion's Head and Ammonoosic from the cog railroad side but was never brave enough to try Huntington's and after watching this video, it was a very wise choice not to.

In 1968, I was 20 years old and backpacking in Viet Nam, least that’s what they told me. I did backpack the White Mountains through the 70s and 80s though. I still get up,but at 78 I don’t hike much.

I live in Twin Mt. and when I was a kid, my parents and I used to go to the Spalding Inn. As I recall, it's behind the Mt. View Grand? It was next to the golf course. The Mt. View is under new ownership. Whitefield is still ice, but we got us some drug dealers here now too..😢 Keeping an eye out for the Massholes!😅😅😅😂

I don't know what condition you are in, but I climbed in this area many times in my mid-fifties, and my kids were doing it while in grade school. The physical exertion is not all that great, if you take your time, and do things safely, with good shoes and plenty of water. Just be sure that you start early enough that you have plenty of daylight, so you never have to rush. Also, go on a day when there are lots of other people on the trail. That way if you do have a problem you will not be stranded alone with no help available. Of course, that being said, I would not recommend Huntington Ravine to a beginner. The footing is fairly sketchy, and falls are really dangerous, because getting stranded overnight can leave you very exposed to the elements, even in mid-summer. In particular, it gets cold up there at night, and hypothermia can set in even at temperatures that seem quite safe in more ordinary situations. So, your caution is commendable, but you might find the easier trails quite manageable, and especially so with some sensible preparation.

@@AmandaDouin we did the saddle trail from chimney pond campground. Our base camp was in a lean-to which we hiked to on the first day and then sumitted the following. We didn't do the knife edge trail but I've always wanted to as well. Katahdin is no joke that's for sure, especially in October we had snow above and below the treeline. The rock scrambling was treacherous.

...Caught me by surprise, a few years ago, and could have cost me 'my life'; Which could be similarly applied to a rock- scrambling scenario ~ 'alone' & 'exhausted' on a steep-grade of descent, in a wilderness setting. I was climbing a magnolia tree, in my backyard, with a chainsaw on a rope, to trim some limbs, that were hanging over my house. [Having been strong and athletic-enough, all my life, to do most any activity i wanted, YET NOW, even though i had experienced many joint injuries/surgeries, and in my late 60's, with a 'male ego', it just wasn't acceptable to think that i had 'limits' to what was reasonable.] I was 'fine', climbing & cutting the limbs, only UNTIL i was ready to descend the tree, and was 'startled' to suddenly realize, that i had spent so much of my strength, that i was NOW So Weak, that i was 'bear-hugging' the tree, struggling to hold on, just to get down without falling.

Oh my goodness, I’m glad you’re ok. This is a very valid point during any hike. I make sure that I do not get to the point of no return. If I feel like I’m not going to be able to make the climb, I would turn around. I would have not gone the last mile to the summit of Wa if I felt my legs didn’t have the strength for the descent. Fortunately my legs felt great on this hike, a little tired during part of the final push on Hunt but I knew I was fine. I get the not wanting to turn around part though. I made this mistake during two different days my body was showing signs of heat exaustion and I almost didn’t make it back to my car. I learned my body better and now know the signs of when stopping and going back are a must. 💗💗💗 Thanks for taking the time to share your story. It takes humility to learn and grow, not only sharing success’ but also failure is part of that journey. Apppreciate you!!

The reason i commented, was mostly to Remind You, that there are those of US, who share Your 'Passion' & 'Style' of hiking, especially for the 'rugged' boulder terrain [more so, than the green tunnel, and 'hostel/hotel hopping' (deli-blazing)]; Though We, for sundry reasons, Struggle to, or simply Can't, literally 'get out there', and Grasp the Boulders, Embrace the Challenges, See the 'new' Vistas, and take in Deep Breaths of Air above the treeline; YET We CAN/DO Celebrate and Enjoy Those of YOU, Who share Your Adventures with Us. The Story, i shared with You, about being exhausted in a tree, with a chainsaw, was a real 'eye-opener' for me. Many of Us were 'Created' by Christ Jesus, our 'Maker', with a very Resilient heart, mind & spirit to 'Continue' inspite of Losses and Struggles; However, my Personal circumstance, has progressively been in a declining state, for many years, which has brought me to a very Perplexing place ... Being a few months from 70 yrs old, and most 'Thankful' to Jesus Christ, my Loving Lord, for many Wonderful Adventures in This Life, Yet i/we Never want to Quit! ~ With the flip-side, of being in a quandary, as to what level of hiking is tolerable and reasonable, for me. I am determined to be as active as i can, for as long as i can; Like my Dad ('Shorty'), who (at 5' 2" tall) was still loading/delivering 26 bales of hay to a horse farm, when he was 75 yrs old. However, being realistic, about my own expectations, my Dad had not experienced nearly the number of surgical issues, as i have. Just for a little parental background ~ Mom & Dad's spirits were SO characterized by STRENGTH & LOVE. (...Married for @ 62 years.) One of MOM's last statements to me (in her 80's), was something i had Never heard Her say. While in her hospital bed, She said, "Steve, I'm Tired." (She served her family and church faithfully, as a very strong, hard-working 'can-do' lady. As one of 13 children, in a family of 'dirt-poor' sharecroppers, she was picking 200 lbs of cotton/day, when only 16 yrs old.) ~ DAD was an airplane mechanic, in the navy, (stationed at Pearl Harber, during 'the war'). He dropped out of school and went to work with some lumberjacks, (as a middle-school aged boy) to help make money for the family, due to his dad's alcoholism/illness. i Never heard my Dad Complain about this Circumstance. When settling his estate, i came across a deed, inwhich he and his mother had put their money together to buy a place, for his alcoholic brother's family to live ~ Just to give You an idea, of His Character. He remarried at 89 (Can you imagine dropping your Dad off at a hotel, with a new Bride, at age 89? Ha!); And, at 90, the DMV renewed His dr. lic. for 5 more yrs, with no restrictions. He was hoping to be 100, though Conjestive Heart Failure eventually brought Him down. His last words to me, in the hospital, were, "I don't Want to be here, but I Need to be. ... They Never wanted to quit! ... TODAY ... Having had 6 months of Chemo (over 25 yrs ago now), which caused much loss of muscle tissue; Especially in my hands, seriously affecting my grip strength), a complete Mastectomy (leaving no stomach or pouch); As well as extensive dental work, which would furthur complicate hygiene on trail), 3 cervical disc surgeries, back surgery, spinal injections, 2 rotator-cuff surgeries, both bicep tendons torn, several damaged nerves, arthritis in my hands, weak previously- injured ankles, patella tendonitis, multiple eye surgeries, and more ... i'm like my truck ~ 'High Mileage' ~ Which i bought used, in 2004, and still driving it; Even after it has been 'totalled' and repaired twice! ALL THAT to say this, that i feel like my body is so fragile, that it wouldn't take much, in a wilderness setting, to find myself in a miserable, if not 'life-threatening' circumstance. My question to Experienced Hikers, as Yourself, would be ... Where should i draw my lines, when deciding on limitations?
