It is informative for the general public, most who don't know about HD...this is great to get awareness out to the community

Science has come a long way in helping people with movement disorders....it's about quality of life....we know how bad HD can get in Late Stages....this gives me some hope for the future kids with this gene.....great job, maybe some families will reconsider asking for help now...it's not like it used to be!

I was diagnosed with Chorea when I was ten.I am now 74.

The following information may interest researchers: the more CAG triplet repeats, beyond the " normal " 10 to 35 repeats, the bigger the probability of a point mutation; the mere extra number of CAG repeats could create a condition where the probability of mistakes made by DNA methyltransferase enzymes acting on the cytosines in CAG triplets, could create STOP codons ( TAG ) inside the CAG repeats, when the methylated cytosine suffers a spontaneous deamination, in a rate that is beyond the cells ability to remove the T, by means of Thymine -DNA glycosylase. If my theory is correct, the existing drugs DNA methyltransferase (DNMT) inhibitors azacytidine and decitabine could slow down the development of Huntington's disease. A definitive cure would be possible if an enzyme can be created, that recognizes and cleaves segments containing more than 35 CAG repeats; I wonder if are there any identified restriction enzymes that could be modified to remove CAG with more than 35 repeats. Such CAG triplets are usually not methylated and are therefore accessible to enzymes; if a therapeutical enzyme could be produced and transported across the nuclear envelope, it might just work. My mother's 6 siblings all hit severe HD in thier 40s so I can't relate to this at all. And the chorea was the least of our worries. Basic things like swallowing seemed to be the breaking point for them all. I've never understood such inhumane outlook on human life and suffering as I did with nursing home administrators. NOT THE STAFF, BUT THE ONES RUNNING THEM.

my husbands father took his own life due to this disease. His grandmother also had it. I believe he was about 40 something. How does one find out if they will get it in the future? I'm very nervous for my husband. He does not show any signs. He is a computer programmer and so amazingly intelligent. I just want to be as educated as possible when it comes to this subject. thanks for this...
