Hurricane Michael: Mexico Beach locals banding together to survive

Robert Baker Jr. shoved his paralyzed father onto a queen-sized mattress as water rushed into his childhood home. He floated to the ceiling, with his mother and wife, until their faces were the only parts of them above the water. The surge was dark and salty, with whitecaps breaking as it tore through the neighborhood carrying almost everything it hit - furniture, picture frames, pieces of glass and thick clumps of sea grass from the Gulf of Mexico. I always had this idea that shorelines should be state parks and not commercially developed. Leave the dunes intact.

Why don't they use prisoners to help with the cleanup like community service? More effective than picking up highway trash.

He had to FLOAT HIS PARENTS?? Is this what these people had to go through? Thank God they survived.

Why on earth did you not evacuate????? Especially with elderly parents!!! I can't understand why!!
@ipsurvivor
@ipsurvivor 6 лет назад
This is why we evacuated BEFORE KATRINA MADE LANDFALL and we were “North Of the railroad tracks/Route 10... You’ve got to be crazy to ride it out especially that close to the initial Crush Zone... When you stay you absorb Emergency Services and even put EMS and Police and other’s lives at risk trying to save your lives. I’m glad you survived but there are free shelters that you can go to where elderly family members can go with you so they aren’t at risk. I don’t say this judgmentally because I know some don’t have a lot of resources to travel but please people learn from this and evacuate. Some stay because they don’t want to get looted... There was sufficient time to gather your most precious photos and heirlooms/sentimental items... and to leave... Your stuff isn’t as important as your lives. Also every car that is left there costs everyone else in terms of insurance losses and increases in premiums.
@cruisemoma9961

I totally agree!!!! Why on earth they didn't evacuate!!!! Especially with elderly parents!! Putting them in harms way is just crazy!!!

WHAT HORRIFIC DEVASTATION! *I just hope that everybody affected by CAT 4.99 **#HurricaneMichael** made it out alive and well, especially those chose to hunker down and and brave out the storm.*

This is so sad and now that we're heading into hurricane season in a couple of weeks Mexico beach, Panama City and other surrounding towns haven't even recovered from hurricane Michael. I hope people start taking these storm surges seriously.

Well downtown Panama City wasnt as bad but Tyndall and Mexico Beach really got it. Dont think they would have survived Dorian though.

You KNOW there will be a storm surge and you still chose to ride it out in a low single storey house right by the beach?!?!?!

Some simply don't have the money to evacuate for weeks. Not to mention several counties will not let you back until days or weeks later to see how your home faired...which means you either find money to stay at hotels or at a shelter. If you've never been through it, it's hard to know how it is. It's a tough call to make.

@@KrissyMeow exactly. It's easy to say leave, but when your entire family and life live in one area some people simply don't have a means or any other option.
@gina1285
@gina1285 5 лет назад
People keep justifying and saying some don't have the means to evacuate, so if they didn't have means how are they surviving now? I am sure that if they had looked for help to evacuate there would have been people to help, just as there are people taking care and helping them now. To risk a paralyzed person's life like that is almost sinful. And now I bet they will rebuild in the same spot on a beach in an area prone to storms.
@emfisher8168
@emfisher8168 5 лет назад
Well the house had weathered storms since 1975, so people get in the mind set that it's going to be the same... Also you don't have to travel that far to evacuate to a church or school that has been turned into a shelter. It's not worth going through that or the risk.. plus you put emergency help at risk because you didn't want to leave...

Shame on trump and all of congress...NOT 1 RELIEF AGENCY HAS SHOWED UP...FOR THESE PEOPLE...DISGUSTING
@ipsurvivor
@ipsurvivor 6 лет назад
Robin Ryan - I’m calling BS on that... They have deployed personnel into the affected areas to work with State and Local agencies. First of all they have to get in there which is not always easy because of downed trees, live downed electrical wires, etc. People were ordered to leave and many like these people didn’t and those who stay put stress on the whole emergency relief apparatus... Does everything have to be “HATE TRUMP” for you?

Blame FEMA. It got to the Baker family first, promised to return with help and didn't. Finally, the Baker son went out and found the town's mayor to get an ambulance to show up and rescue his elderly parents after they spent two nights in miserable conditions. Sure, the Bakers should have evacuated. But don't count on FEMA if you stay put in a storm.

God Bless you Sir! we have vacationed in Mexico Beach for years, It breaks my heart! We were supposed to be there next week 10/20/2018 and watched it all be ruined. We will miss it for sure and pray the people will stand together and rebuild. And not let big money come in and take it over with high rise buildings and stuff. I cant even imagine how you feel i wish i was there to help you along and to recover. For the simple reason i feel like i have lost my second home also. God Bless you and your family!

The New World Foundation had a brother who won a sailboat race in Ft. Lauderdale and his sailboat got run-over by a 18-wheeler in Florida after the race. He got killed when he got home,,, from what I can see - he might have gone to heaven. I myself moved the polar vortex's because I am allowed to have air-conditioning in 120 degree weather. My family was killed and my bank account was stolen along with my corporate mail box also and everything I owned I am sure that my brother Michael went to heaven and started working,,,he was a home contractor that worked on foundations.

Never thought a darn hurricane Michael can do this because there no way it ruin these much but don’t ask me it the 3rd biggest hurricane because I already know and PLEASE READ: if there a hurricane that isn’t small if it big u know u gone move because if u don’t move u MAY have a chance of dieing just because the hurricane is huge it doesn’t mean that u gone leave because it might flew into your house and rekt u so if it the last hurricane through 10 or 15 u can stay there but if it pass the 9 or 7 then it gone be big and I know I have some grammar mistakes but idc and at the same time I already know that hurricane Michael was 3rd biggest because i been studying history and if u have any question for hurricane Michael then u can reply to me. Stay Good :)

Since 1975, never had a hurricane this bad? Living right by the ocean is still worth it if they are willing to stay. Even after this, they will stay there. It is too beautiful to leave.

Krissy Tokyo I bet this area won't rebuild like before. If another hurricane hits, they will be in a direct path now because their will less obstacles/houses in the way.

I know your struggle was real and scary and was a great loss. However, you are all alive. Count your blessings and "Get outta' Dodge" next time when you're told to. You paid very little for this lesson. Next time it may not turn out as well. God bless you and your family...but you need to be just a bit smarter about these things..Your family is your responsibility and you didn't get them out of there. Please learn from this. This is not funny.
