This may sound odd, but the thing I fig most about your videos is, when I watch, it seems like it wouldn't be much different if I was right there with you and you were teaching me on the job. You have a terrific way of presenting information that doesn't overwhelm. I have trouble processing information (always have), so, I can't stress enough how valuable your style is! I carry CRC Electrical parts cleaner with me and whenever I come across corrosion and the component is acting up I start with cleaning to rule out the connections. It may still be a bad sensor or module, but at least I ruled out poor connections. Good troubleshooting video. Keep these coming as proper diagnostics is obviously key to any good repair.

In the debriefing you were amazed that we want to watch these vids. Your vids are such a help to me and the industrial maint community, because you go threw the whole big picture process. ( So many people just find one problem and move on) Ive used that process and it has helped me gain more experience in my field and outside of it. I find malfunctioning economizers ALL the time! It’s an epidemic in my area.

Hey… watched hvac videos through tech school 4 years ago. Still pop in to watch these very often. Still learning always learning. On my way to Journeyman in PNW area. Light commercial HVAC/R mostly restaurant refer and high temp stuff feels like a total different animal so you are providing a great service to the community. It’s just your brain telling you to doubt. I appreciate the way you do your videos always. Good job man

44:17 This might help you figure it out. Not sure if you were that kinda kid, but when there was something out of the ordinary going on, some kids like to watch the work being done to understand how things work, even if it's just a window pane getting swapped. That thing never dies. I'm here working full time, elbow deep in electrical cabinets, but still the more new things I see, the more I wanna know. When we hook up power up to or measure a giant air handler unit, I wanna see what's in there and what makes it tick :D

It was fun to see you troubleshooting an economizer! Most of the time they're disconnected, so I didn't really have any idea of how they actually work.

Low T is the compressor lock out temperature, which I set to at least 45°(usually 55°). In advanced settings that is the actuator temperature lock out, the 45° setting. I also had that exact actuator issue last week. I tried to change that actuator to a Belimo, but the mounting holes don't line up. That return being in a different room that could be isolated from the supply air is a potential issue as well. As you said, the sensed temperature might be different with the zone sensor, but the return is being pulled from a room that is in a different operational state(heating in the return area while cool is needed in the supply area).

Part of the PM service I perform every 6 months at my commercial locations is changing batteries, checking their schedules, setting temperatures, verifying proper time and date,and adjusting the changeover accordingly. It's amazing how well an area can be conditioned when the thermostat is programmed correctly. I see wacky stuff with thermostats all the time!

Great job Chris. Interesting, I've had problems with measurequick recently as well, it doesn't want to pick up my probes.

1:35 typical Carrier RTU that's been serviced by guys that don't know how to set their clutch on their cordless drill, look at all the new screw holes LOL!!!

That whole Bluetooth issue you were having with measure quick has been an odd quirk of Android for many years now... Basically, it used to be that for an app (like measure quick) to scan for Bluetooth devices it would need to have the permission to access the device location. The thought process being that an app could track an approximate location by the devices it sees in the scans (Ie if you have a Bluetooth mouse on your desk the app could tell you were at home). This has always been a pain for developers as no one wants to give an app location access if it has no need for it. So Google eventually added a new permission for 'nearby devices' that allows for Bluetooth scans and whatnot without needing full location access. The only issue is now applications need to be requesting this new permission and not the location one. Measure quick likely hasn't rolled that update out yet, so the app never prompted you about it.

I have a very big passion for maitnance. Normally in high voltage substations and outdoorswitchgears. But i also have a big passion for refrigeration, and often i love to watch brazing, compressor changes and brazing other components in the refrigerant lines. I also really like when you troubleshoot the electrical, as an electrician and maitnance technician. And some of your comments are funny, er look like something i could say.

I have no intention of being in the air conditioning trade.. but the reason I watch these vids. Because of his methods of bigger picture and eliminating every thing. I basically apply the same method in my trade in the elevator and electrical field.. I also send these vids to my friends who are in the air conditioning Field

Appreciate what you do making these videos. I'm not even in the HVACR field (yet, lol, maybe one day!) but what you do as far as electrical and big picture diagnosis lines up well with most service industries. im 15 and im really interested and fascinated in the hvac field, you have no clue how much I want to work in this field! When I was younger I had a transmission radiator, bucket, water pump, ice water, and fan making it into a homemade ac. It brought my room down 2 degrees for a couple hours. Seems weird but everytime I see an air conditioner at a business, school, or house im like "thats a condensing unit". I haven't gotten bored of pursuing this career and my dad worked in this field too so I think I would do great.

OMG Chris, I was getting flashbacks of problems, I had as a 30-year master service tech, with 32 units on a huge 12-screen theater with bad economizers and all types of mechanical A/C problems it took over 12 hours just to triage them all, and things like power feedback and lightening strikes took out electric circuit boards worth $3-$5k, VFD drives, the hole gambet of economizer problems, 23 out of 30 A/C units where either completely down or trashed, it took me and a helper 7+ days to get everything fixed, cleaned and back up and running, and that's after 3-4 days waiting on all the parts and supplies came in from ordering. We even replaced 12 compressors 28 filter dryers, and 10 each 30 lb jugs of R-22. Some of those units took 19-22 pounds of R-22. My God it took two years to stop having dreams about that place, It was good steady work and brought in $152K to the company but that was the summer from Hell. The year was 2000 in Tucson Az. with temps hitting 123 and rooftop temps hitting 200-209, I can tell you one thing I took my 3- week vacation all in one shot and left that God-forsaken city even if it was for only 3 weeks. :) I still loved it and kept working until 2012 when I had to medically retire from 3 heat strokes in 12 months. Now I just hear shit on roofs F*cken up or bearings and compressors going to shit sounding like a box of rocks and can tell just by sound when shit is FUBARed lol My 30-year-old kids think I am nuts and laugh at me . :)

Had that issue with the permissions after the Android update. Figured it out the hard way then trickled down the information to everyone I knew so they didn't have to scratch their heads the way I did

Those Honeywell economizer controllers always seem to give me issues. I usually have much less issues with the Trane economizer logic modules with the potentiometer dials. Granted there is no display on the Trane style modules , but they are really cut and dry and the set up manual for them is straightforward and easy to set up.

I started using measure quick because of you Chris. When they got to be greedy Bastards and if you didnt pay for the service and took 10 steps to use it. I gave Up!!!! Love your videos but Measure quick can F OH

i HATE honeywell interfaces. i wrestled with the digital POS thermostat in my new home for months trying to get it to do what i set it to do. its been 3yrs and it still has a mind of its own. id rather the old chain pulley running to the basement from the diningroom

You gotta be careful with the 10mm, they love to take random self-directed vacations from tool boxes/bags. 34:37 - "Why not just cut the wires..." Why do that when you have a perfectly-good crimp terminal from the factory? Unless the wire/terminal is burnt or corroded, don't mess with it. Cutting the wire introduces the possibility of one single strand poking about where it doesn't belong. Sure, you can be a great tech and constantly double-check yourself to make sure you don't, but that sounds like extra steps and one more opportunity for a problem to occur. Eliminate the variables whenever you can! I love how you often recommend using your camera phone before beginning any work. It's a great tip to follow, no matter what you're working on. And with the quality of today's phone cameras, you can pinch-zoom and see minute details your eyes can miss. Chris now has me saying "3, 2, 1, please don't blow up" habitually at work whenever I turn something back on after cleaning! 🤣

And when I needed to review economizer fundamentals this week… booom! Chris comes with a Jade master class. I love when serendipity comes into full force. Till the end 🤓

The customer needs to be able to have some manual control for the room temperature, obviously with a limited range. An off switch too! but obviously timed.

Hi Chris, you are my favourite HVAC channel because of the time and effort you put in explaining the details and your thought processes. This video is a great in-depth guide to economizers. Also, on a personal note, I'm autistic and the effort and details you put into your videos is really helpful to me. Just a thought, but have to thought about teaching HVAC? I think you'd be an excellent tutor. Maybe something to consider if or when you retire? Anyway... Regarding the economizer, the QR code on the top left of the control unit is a link to the Installation Instructions in PDF format so you can get all the info on your phone immediately. I don't know if this works on other devices though. I'm now watching on a proper computer rather than a laptop and I was able to capture thw QR code by pointing my phone at the monitor! I'll try to remember to try other QR codes as they show up in your videos. Also, the wires you momentarily disconnected on the controller were the 'Sylk Bus' datalink for up to three optional sensors for outdoor air (OA), return air (RA) and discharge (supply) air (DA). I wonder is this economizer is an older unit because the link didn't take me directly to the manual but I was able to search on Honeywell's website with the filename from the QR code which, incidently, is 63-2700.pdf. I found 'JADE Economizer Module (Model W7220)'. I was able to read part of the model number from the sticker just visible on the top of the unit in your video and also match information from the damper actuator.

If you have a negative coefficient thermistor for the freeze alarm I've seen them corrode and read incorrectly because of the added resistance from the corrosion

The freeze position should be set to min pos and not sd. If its set to shutdown it will close the damper if the temperature after the evap coil gets below the ma low setting in advanced settings. You want it to just close the damper to minimum position and not completely shut it.

As there is nothing in the unit to freeze (gas heat, DX cool) the low limit (freeze) is for EAT to the DX coil. It's necessary to prevent compressor floodback. Watch lowering that setpoint or you'll be back for a compressor changeout. Unless that's what you want.

3:42 They are most likely mild steel with a nickel, then a copper coat. It's a pretty solid corrosion prevention method, just a tad on the expensive side. One trick with them though... Just like with cars, you have to be careful about what it touches. Just like with connecting aluminium and copper conductors, if you don't do it right, it will act like a battery as soon as water and air touches it at the same time and it will electrolyse itself to hell and back until one metal runs out. I have cleaned up a decent amount of black-white cottage cheese looking crud from burnt out dissimilar metal connections :C

As a non-American it is so weird watching someone do their work entirely in American units... Fahrenheit, pounds, inches, psi etc. It's absolutely mad that you use that for important things and understand it.

Got a question. In my world, mixed air is after the OSA/RA dampers, but before any mechanical heating or cooling (where the OSA and RA "mix"). In your vid at10:51 I see the OSA damper on the right and the RA damper just below it, so, from my perspective we are essentially looking right into the MA plenum. Add to that - you have all the panels off, so the IBM is pulling air through the filters and they are out there in the breeze. In other words there is little to no RA flowing, the system is pulling pretty much 100% OSA. Now at 4:37 I can see on the screen that the IAT is 67. at 18:54 you mention the OSAT is 56. So how does the MAT get down to 43 as you mention at 18:47? How can it be colder than both air streams? Either - 1: your definition of MAT is different than mine, or 2: the MAT sensor is bad, reading 10 or 12 degrees low, or 3: the sensor is in the wrong place. I would expect to see it just on the other side of the filters, prior to heating/cooling. Your fix was to raise the MAT freeze setpoint - is it possible that the real fix was to "raise" the actual MAT sensor reading, either by replacing the sensor or moving it to the right location? (edit: or checking/adjusting the MAT calibration if it is adjustable?) (Edit2: If that's a Jade W7220A1000 then the MAT IS calibrate-able, but only +- 2.5 degrees, so not enough range if it was 10-12 degrees low)

hm ... how about testing the voltage(s) with a multimeter on such things and maybe also injecting some voltage into i.e. the dampeners to see if they work? that's at least what i see a lot from electronics people

If that’s a Carrier unit, they always had way too much control wires on components. It was either cut access off or zip tie the wires into one bundle.

Really ac 74f? I would think that is little warm too. Even 72f might be little high. Would set ac turn on 70f and heat alright I guess. I like cold and home ac at 66f too though.

When you checking discharge line for second stage, it seems that you touched discharge line for 1st system.

since that honeywell jade thing uses an analog damper, during economizer mode it should be able to blend OA/RA to hit the target mixed air temperature(usually not much lower than 50-55F to avoid duct condensation), once the economizer hits 100% OA and not able to maintain the target MAT, then start staging compressor(s). that's how it *should* work. IMO, if it can't do that then it should go in the trash 😁

Man, if they're doing all these remodels and spending all this money, why don't they save themselves money and replace the rooftop units. They look old and beat up but I'm sure they're only like five to 10 years old or are they? Are they going to replace the rooftops?. Cuz I mean these units once again look old. So they're going to Wear out those their pocketbooks😂. But on the other side man getting an rooftop unit and even condensers now is hard. Especially when you have to order to special specs like big corporations have like. Assume this is a they have very specific wants and needs. You got to wait like half a year.
