A young mother visits her father in prison.
HUSH LITTLE BABY is used with permission from Camille Hollett-French. Learn more at camillehollett....
Lacey is a young woman and mother visiting her father Richard in a maximum security prison. Lacey is familiar with the routine and has been there before, many times. She puts on a guarded, unruffled demeanor, though certain moments -- a snide remark from a guard, or the knowing glances of the other visitors -- throw her off at times.
But then she settles into her visit with her father, both talking into phone receivers as a pane of glass separates them. Lacey listens to her father as he chats about his new lawyer, his hopes of a reduced sentencing, and his entreaties for Lacey to rustle up the entire family to visit for Easter. As Lacey loses patience with her father's delusions, she demands the truth from him. And what she discovers alters her relationship with him forever.
Written and directed by Camille Hollett-French, who also plays Lacey, this powerful, intimate drama is a perfect example of how intricate, resonant storytelling can be contained in perfectly wrought writing and performance. The interplay between what characters say and what they hide is the perfect scaffolding for a fraught, fractured father-daughter dynamic to play out, complicated by the secrets and horrors they know between them.
Told in an intimate, naturalistic style, the film begins with a few small but telling scenes to set up Lacey and the film's dramatic situation, but then settles into a classic two-hander between the two main characters. The camerawork and pacing seem casual and offhand, but as the dialogue unfurls between father and daughter, each devastating detail reveals a remarkable discipline in the storytelling that keeps the film subtle but raw and the pacing suspenseful.
Richard reveals himself to be a seemingly loving father, but telling remarks reveal his perception of himself as innocent and a victim of circumstance. Each evasion and conversational feint seems to test Lacey's patience as well as draw viewers in, as Richard continues, even in prison, to avoid taking responsibility for what he's done. And what he's done isn't fully revealed until Lacey finally loses patience with Richard, and demands to know how Richard's crime has affected the others in their family, as well as herself.
As Lacey, Hollett-French builds a conflicted character, and her expressiveness and ability to convey deep emotions with few words make it clear that she is both furious with him and yet still a loving daughter with some fragile hope about his character. As Richard, actor Bill MacDonald carries off a difficult role, playing both the weakness and entitlement of the criminal predator but also a man desperate for connection with his daughter. It's a riveting performance, evoking why Lacey still loves him so much -- but also why she must leave him behind.
HUSH LITTLE BABY is part of a series of shorts by Hollett-French, each dealing with shame, self-expression, identity and sexuality. Though it deals with thorny, difficult and traumatic emotional subjects, the film is unforgettable because it also acknowledges just how a child's love for their parent is palpably enduring, even when the parent is a monster in many ways. It's this love that makes the film so wrenching -- and such parental betrayal so agonizing and painful to watch.

A powerful performance from both lead actors. Child abuse comes in many forms, as does abuse of any kind. It took me 50 years to realise I was an unwanted child; both my parents hated me. A psychotic manipulative mother and a psychopathic violent father. Yet they were my parents and I loved them. A rich brew indeed. I feel fortunate and rewarded by the fact that late in all our lives I had the courage to tell them individually they were never fit to have children. That was my epiphany. I'm 70 now, have no family and live alone. One kind friend who I cherish, trust and rely upon. My life's achievement being I never hurt anyone. I'm truly content with that.

It sure was. That woman is an incredible actress. Not sure as an actor I could play that dad’s role. That’s a nightmare role. Like Stanley Tucci in The Lovely Bones. I could only watch that once. It puts a pit in my stomach.

Interesting that you mentioned that. It seems the film was exploring the idea that while some crimes might be more accepted within a society , others are simply too severe to forgive. When the father asks his daughter to smuggle contraband, it's almost like he's seeking her approval for his actions, especially considering that other families were implied to be doing similar things in the begining of the film a two young women are walking away and one is putting her shoes on suggesting that she y have had something hidden in her shoes. As the film comes to a close, there's a significant moment when the daughter notices her father's physical scars, noting their black and blue. It's a powerful scene that hints at the pain he endured, both physically and emotionally, during his time in prison. On the other hand, the fact that he doesn't acknowledge her emotional scars suggests a failure on his part to own up to any potential abuse he may have inflicted on her.

Riveting. Both writing and acting. Not the sort of movie to watch for entertainment. But, unfortunately, the type that needs to be made. Ppl involved in it need the arts to help them process it and ppl who are not involved need to understand how devastating it is for other individuals and society as a whole.

Amazing acting by both. The writing and directing are superb. A sad and brutal tale that needs to be told. That Lacey doesn't remember one way or another if and how she was abused is brilliant storytelling. I don’t know of many who have been abused, but what I do know is that the hidden abuse affects us all. Not evenly, though.

Stupendous acting and a story that dares to get behind the emotional complexity of this issue - beyond animal howling. "I have a sickness" and there but for the grace of God... But you don't dare try to understand because then you're complicit. Beware of those who try to get away from their own shadow by loudly condemning others. The law must be applied, true.

It's these type of more hard hitting and downbeat shorts that really make for great discussion. Even more amazing, I've noticed a lot of these films are usually directed/written by the main actors of it. Camille Hollett-French, who is excellent as Lacey the daughter also wrote/directed it. Sadly a part of me expects poor Lacey was probably abused along with her siblings by their father. Deep down she probably knows he did too. That's why this was probably the last time she visit's him. I get the feeling that none of her other siblings want anything to do with him. The actor Bill Macdonald who plays Richard, really shows what selfish, arrogant horrible nasty man he is. Tries to paint himself as the victim and not giving a damn about the damage he caused others. But how abusers might have some control over one of their victims. Ballsy role to take on playing a child molester for any actor. Excellent performance from Macdonald. Definitely not a short who'll want to watch over and over again but a must see.

@@CedroneTravels You're welcome. I think there is a deeper meaning in the sense that she realizes he is lost.
