Brian Christopherson and Mike Schaefer got together on Tuesday to discuss the latest news in Nebraska football, touching on Evan Cooper’s resignation, the anticipation of John Butler being named the next defensive backs coach and more on the room itself.
To start with the two discussed just how much Cooper meant to Matt Rhule and the staff and why his loss is more than just changing out a position coach, particularly in regards to what he did in recruiting and with evaluation.
From there the two conversed about Butler and how he transitions into the job and what he has waiting for him in the room.
After a quick break the conversation continued but with a focus on the players in the defensive back room. Finally things finished up with a little recruiting talk.

The sky isn't falling, guys. I'm old enough to remember when Kevin Steele left and lots of people were sure he couldn't be replaced, and we would never recruit another player out of the South . No one is irreplaceable

Schaefer needs to just set up and do the media tournament. Each outlet that participates can upload the video to their various platforms. Coach will see it. Then Rhule might actually challenge the winning squad. If his people have to invest the time and energy into doing the event it’s a no go. If they can jump in to a thing you’ve put effort into that’s a promising situation.

I hate to see Cooper go but bottom line we won 5 games last season. I understand recruiting was great first year & had great players on roster already . I personally think recruiting should be a better for 2025 class with the #1 QB on roster & getting Coach Rhule. Think Coach sees it too bringing up in last presser about liking to add a special guy to help with recruiting. If I played , pick Butler first to be my position coach any day! Go Big Red!🏈

But he resigned.... He wasn't fired... Why? Ya don't give up that type of money and benefits unless ya did something so bad that ya don't want to be fired because whatever drama would have came out, would have hurt your future in getting another job in coaching. This wasn't a state employee working forestry who resigned. Thus was a guy who was a top 10 state employee. The silence speaks volumes!

Bringing in a coach with the resume of John Butler , what recruit wouldn't want to learn and play for someone like him? Nebraska will miss Coach Cooper, his recruiting and evaluation skills, and his tireless work ethic. We wish Coach Cooper only the best and welcome Coach Butler to Nebraska.

The “what recruit wouldn’t want to play for him” logic is the same Colorado fans say about Deion Sanders who is an NFL hall of fame cornerback. Not saying you’re wrong or DBs should obviously choose one school or the other I just think it’s not as easy of a choice as fans make it out to be.

Wager leaving wasn't planned that was self inflicted.

So.much they aren't even talking about what he did. They know, but have been told to do the "nothing to see here." This isn't real media.

@@beebers99 If you know it all then tell us. How do you know Cooper did something bad? Could he have a serious health issue? If he was arrested I think we would have heard about that by now......like Mickey Joseph and Wager.

A top 10 state employee on a 2 year 650k per year guatunteed deal, reigns suddenly at 4pm on the Friday after The 4th, and nobody has any reason to WHY.... LIKE REALLY? I CALL BS! Sounds like something cringe-worthy they want to keep under wraps. And nobody in the media has no clue to WHY he resigned? Sorta an insult to fans! Do better! Makes you all just seem like part of a PUBLIC AFFAIRS arm to Husker Sports, and not a real media group. Weak!
