A Job, and have another one from the junk pile, might as well build them in parallel, SO put the cases together on this video, next video the saws will be assembled.
One of the things I cover here is how CRITICAL the installation of the PTO side bearing is. Has to be at the right location. For the "Stihl" folks, this is like the MS660's on the PTO side, same deal, same tolerances.
NOTE: After a bunch of questions,
Contact me on Facebook Group "Chainsaws & Woods Craft" or on "forestryforum.com" ( screen name "weimedog" ) if you are interested in the tools I build
ALSO Started a "FaceBook" Page "Husqvarna Autotunes Only" for those who want to get into the discussion of CST and the more technical side of Autotunes

I just lost my mom at 86 but my dad is alive at 84. I failed to tell my mom how much I loved and cared about her like I should have. I now understand and tell my dad how much I care and love him many times daily.

I am sorry to here about your loss. I lost my father before my mother and he died on their 63rd wedding anniversary. She would show any signs of pain or loss. I stayed with her for a month just to help fill the void. My mother and I became closer than we ever had. Then in an instant she was gone. I talked to her the night before and she seemed fine. That was though!! Spend as much time with your dad as you can. I lived half way across the country and made time to call my mother every day. I was always to busy to even call them when my father was still alive. Any one that reads this try to make time for your parents as they are the only ones you have!!!

Hey, Walter. I used to also collect Crankcases on 353 and 372 with gasket and sealant. Now same collect on one gasket. Just soak it in oil for about 1 hour. After that, it is soaked and perfectly crimped during Assembly. I use only cheap Chinese gaskets. Another plus is that it is not necessary to remove the sealant at the next repair...

Heating the inner bearing race helped Me install a crank yesterday. I don’t have the fancy puller yet. Not crazy hot mind you, just 5 second with propane torch. Factory cranks and skf bearings fit together way tighter than aftermarket. Current bottom end is Atlas 6202’s and ITAL crank. First one I bought said made in turkey, second say made in China.

that was spooky :-) i just rebuilt mine recently after a bit of time apart with getting spare parts , the crank bearings were a bit rough but tight on crank and no spin in the casings as it was a 2012 390 xp and the piston was a bit worn but no scoring so run it recently to break in a bit

Also, the reason for having plastic bearing cages is so when the cages fail, metal and plastic both do, the metal doesnt destroy the inside of the motor....
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand Год назад
Yeah that's the rumor. And its true if you catch it soon enough you can stop what comes next. Unfortunately what REALLY happens is the loggers run those things until they really stop. AND the nylon has long been gone , the balls come out of the races and ruin everything. Including the cases. So in my experience, much to my friends chagrin. That is pure BS, a rationalization spread by those who sell those things :) Added to that myth, is the fact nylons simply can't deal with the heat and coking that happens over time on pro level saws. I've seen as many dead 461's as 372 XT's with wasted bearings. Nylons work on saws like MS660's as they run cooler. The 500 series have had batches of issues since the beginning. AND I build them to run cooler therefore they do last. But just go online and see the litany of bearing issues.. Bottom line for me. IF there is a steel caged alternative, I use them. Period . End stop. Where there are no steel caged options I make them run cooler. And you know who else does that? Husqvarna. Their new "big" reliability enhancement on 562's is a dished piston to take the compression down a bit, lowers heat. I'll stick to what I do. And keep the snap just rid the heat on those saws. On ALL 372 class builds... Steel caged bearings. They simply stand up the the application better. Why there are still running L77's and 268/272's around. Even first gen 372's typically have solid bottom ends with their steel caged 6202's still running while a large percentage of the early nylon caged bearing XT's either are done or have gone thru a bottom end rebuilds. AND the steel caged ones still run...like on the one I just did a video on.

Another great video and many reasons to give thanx. Thank you for kind words and good message accompanied by fantastic knowledge. This is edutainment. Sad that the upcoming generation doesn’t regard family or pursue good relationships. There in favor of financial gain and benefiting themselves above logic and kindness and loyalty. Younger people are lonely and most don’t know it. Those of us who do, are sad to loose the elders who take their wisdom with them whene they go. Some say it’s just where I live it’s so bad. I hope that’s true. Nobody even knows a neighbor anymore and family = shit unless they give you money or fix your shit for free. Sorry just a little jealous people find people to love and be loved by.

My friend had a fairly new 390 in his shop recently with a snapped con rod, I wonder if it was that new lighter weight con rod like the one in your customers saw??? New is not always better! Happy thanks giving from Scotland 👍
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand 4 года назад
The newer con rod probably weights the same, but they changed the profile to be wider and therefore stronger....I would prefer the new one. I do have two 385's in the junk pile with busted connecting rods. Suspect Husqvarna was responding to that with this new crank design. Those saws could rev....the way I build them now is to keep the RPM's down but increase compression. Then with the additional torque available add a tooth to the drive sprockets...from 7 to 8. And get the rakers on the chain in the .030 range to also take advantage of that power. Now with the saw's "fat" spot a little lower in the RPM range...hoping I don't need one of those new cranks...:)

Question, do the bearings want to end up flush with the inner face of the casings ? cheers !
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand Год назад
maybe, but the important dimension is what protrudes to the oil pump side. I can't remember off the top of my head the can't exceed number. If I was to guess it would be .050. What ever t is I have that in one of the video's on 390 builds.

So the Husqvarna OEM replacement bearings are steel now ??
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand Год назад
On some models but others still the same with nylon caged bearings. And if the saw is run within reasonable conditions they obviously last. My 565 case and point along with those built 562's I've done over the years..

Why are all of the video's not just here but other builder's it seems always about Husqavarna's? Are they the most popular saws for logging? I have both Stihl and Husqavarna saws and the Stihl's seem to last longer. I don't log I am just a firewood cutter. I would like to see some Stihl builds. Any one can answer my question about the saw brands and uses. I know that people are brand loyal I understand that. I would like to here from people that have used both brands. Thank You!!
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand 4 года назад
The reason here is two fold, first I have access to Husqvarna more than Stihl's. Second the COST of doing what I typically do with Husqvarna's is so high on Stihls often it isn't worth the expense. The reliability question one brand to the next is miss leading as each of the major brand have some really amazing models and some not. Dealt with at that level actually makes some sense. ( Model by model vs. one brand vs. the other ). Stihl 660's and a few others from that genertion were rugged and I enjoy those I have. Excellent designs. Similarly Husqvana's of that era like the 281/288's and the later 372 ( Original Editions ) and 390 are staples in the Professional saw word. The new Husqvarna 572 looks to follow in those foot steps while some of their other 500 series saws didn't. Stihl, same thing...the 361, 362, 362 version 2 or what ever was evolving a class from a not as reliable a state into one that is reliable. Conversely the 461's were a great replacement for the 460's and have proven to be solid. On the mid range saws? A Old Tried and true Husqvanra 455/460 will out last any of the newer Stihl 291/391 "spring" anti vibration saws. Point? It really is a saw model by model analysis that needs to be made relative to reliablity vs. brands. I work on all of them. AND to the Husqvarna Stihl thing, the cost of the builds/rebuilds also determines the interest among most in the "Hobby" saw world...the pro's? Mine don't have time for rebuilds, they just buy new ones and make money with them until they stop. And if you go back in my channel there are as many 660 clone video's that is a Stihl copy, as there are Husqvarna's. Again cost the issue. Hope that helps clear up the delima :) ( Husqvarna NEW OEM cylinders for many of the 300 series saws are under $150 dollars...LIST! ) ( Price out a new OEM 461 cylinder.....) One last point and really the most important one. Culture. The Stihl dealer / corporate culture is really closed and controlling. They don't facilitate the Do It Yourself types in favor of having a Stihl Dealer involved. Husqvarna right up until the "Autotunes" made the cost and process of tinkering and rebuilding much easier....for all involved. And the results play out here on RU-vid. Tangible evidence to anyone objective on which brand is easier to deal with.
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand 4 года назад
In fact if you go to the very FIRST video on the Chinese Aftermarket parts, it was about trying to keep an OEM 460 running and in operational condition for a logger who tended to dent and smash saws...the aftermarket parts made the cost a non issue where OEM parts would have set up a situation that saw would have been sold off..too expensive. He switched to Husqvarna because of Cost...and they have proven to be just as reliable if not more so (390's) but the cost of parts is substantially less therefore the cost of ownership. AND he could have me work on stuff when going through a dealer meant waiting ....days sometimes weeks. Often because there are so many models of Stihl, the dealers stock the parts MOST likely to be sold and not a full suite required to support a pro operation. And now with all the Stihl in Tractor stores....more confusion as they are tractor folks not saw folks around here. Why I get a LOT of Stihl opportunities should I decide to take them on. BUt I stick with the saws I can afford to keep parts around for and actually enjoy working on ...Husqvarna's.
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand 4 года назад
Although....restoring a MS660 is in process because they are awesome....and I have a pile of 441's, and hope to end up with a clean ms461 this year. A bucket list saw because I just like them...
