Sometimes the customers request to have certain maintenance performed can lead us down the wrong path when it comes to doing the proper repairs. This Husqvarna 440 chainsaw is a good example. #smallenginerepair
Awesome video! I like how you're watching the video from the same angle as if you are watching yourself work at the work bench. That's a fun way to do it.
I bought this exact same saw not knowing how to start one of these. The seller said it was a return no start, but he bench tested it brand new worked perfectly. I took a chance and bought it. I could not get this saw to start at all unless I held the throttle wide open and almost cutting my leg off a few times. My buddy was into the tree cutting service and had a large monster one of these and had the same issues. It would only start if you tacked it right out. I found out from a simple youtube video that you need to read directions and follow common sense when starting these. Press the primer 6 or 10 times, move the lever to choke to lock choke and high throttle, it should only take 2 pulls on a bad day to get it to bark off, then without touching the throttle at all, move the lever to the normal run position, pull it and let it rev out for about 5 seconds or so then she will be good to go. This year, it does none of that and only runs if I pour 2 cycle gas in the cylinder with a new plug, it still doesn't run at all leaving me to believe its a major carb issue. One of the reasons why i'm here so thank you for going over this saw with us. These are just light duty homeowner specials and no one wants to work on them, but this saw ran for 7 years straight every year until this past year when it didn't.
What did you gap spark plug and coil to? Where did you get flat shim stock to gap coil? You make this look easy, must have lots of practice 😊. Like your power screwdriver.@TheGreasyShopRag
Great video. I just had to hit the "Subscribe" button, as I learn a bit from your video and really liked your presentation. I will go through my 440 and PM it. I will have to see what other videos you have on your channel. Nice workbench! Thanks again.
Lol, the first day I bought my Husqvarna 435 I cut into some punky wood and the nose sprocket jammed up just like that. Took 2 minutes to figure it out and clear the sprocket. Absolutely no problems after that. Just new saw testing me out, lol.
Working on autos you can never just go by the customers diagnosis. Gotta check for yourself. You can use their diagnosis as a jumping off point and I imagine it's the same with small engines. I got stupid and mounted a 14" OREGON Bar and Chain on my Ryobi 18V cordless 8" Pruning Chainsaw. Best thing I ever did. I'm not expecting to be felling 200 year old cedars with it, but it clears the trails of downed branches and trees perfectly. I can get better reach with the 14" bar and it cuts so much faster and cleaner than the 8" bar and chain that it comes with from the Ryobi factory. I pondered getting the Ryobi 40V 14" chainsaw but ultimately the excessive weight and size became an issue with that. It was a direct bolt in swap that took less than 15 minutes and came at a cost of $30 for the OREGON bar and chain.
Good tune up, but have to wonder if, the person who brings a perfectly good running saw in to free the bar sprocket is competent enough to be using the saw in the first place?
This is perfect. Thank you for making this. Question - do you recommend an aftermarket bar and chain, or is the Husqvarna bar and chain good enough. I use it like 1-3 times a year. I'm that customer.
If thats all you use it than most any bar and chain brand will work but remember, you get what you pay for. If you get the OEM stuff then you know it will fit and work properly.
Do you have to be qualified for repairs service like this you offer? I've been fixing saws myself for years now and wondered if I should branch out and build a service shop.
Thanks for the videos sir. I was wondering, what type of grease are you using when you are applying grease to the needle bearings on the clutch of the chainsaws you are working on? I've been watching you use the squeeze tube grease, but haven't been able to catch what kind of grease it is. Thank you for your time.
Husqvarna general purpose grease part #502 51 27‑01. Those small tubes I use are the same thing but came from owners packets of machines we no longer have.
I have the Husquvarna 440 x torq. It has been gutless out of the box compared to all the Huskies I have had in the past, EXCEPT when it runs out of gas. The Last few seconds of gas the saw performs like a champ. Any thoughts or insites would be appreciated.
When it runs out of gas its running lean. The engine will naturally scream when running lean but continuous lean running will ruin the engine. Its possible the carb is set too rich on the high speed but its also possible this engine is just slower than the other models you have.
I have a one 4 yr old one, has bout maybe 9 hrs on it, e series, only likes to start when I hold gas trigger all the way?, is there a carb adjustment on these, new to this brand, usually run stihl’s
Yes they have adjustable carbs but I'm curious about your starting procedure. Prime, choke. If you pull more than 2 or three times with the choke on you may be flooding it. Pull till it pops then take off choke and pull till it starts. It will start on fast idle till you hit the trigger.
@@TheGreasyShopRag yes…. Same as you do, I just went out and adjusted the carb., starts up easily now, and top end runs better, it was kinda bogging down… not anymore runs like it should… thx a million !! Keep up the great videos.. wish we had RU-vid when we were kids I’m 60 now, much appreciated take care and god bless
You're right, if I would have run the saw first I would have gone straight for the bar repair BUT I still would have done the tune up as requested. Maybe I wouldn't have replaced all the same parts but I certainly would have taken the time to look at them. The only difference you would have seen is the order the repair was presented in the video.
Its hard for me to know. I personally never have had this problem and I don't know what they were doing before it jammed up. I mean, sometimes they come in with blood and hair on them.
@@TheGreasyShopRag im still watching your videos, im enjoying it, so you said "sometimes they come in with blood and hair on them"..........that's very obvious, thats LEATHERFACE been doing lately.
Hey umm I am working on my saw now it will start up then it will die and I can't restart it for a long time. I am looking at the gap and I am not sure how big or small it should be would you happened to know
That model. Has no power. I also have a 455 rancher that has problem after problem. Not dependable. Just bought another echo, much better in my opinion.@@TheGreasyShopRag
