I've been using this Husqvarna hatchet for good two years now, and I decided that we knew each-other well enough for me to be able to say something about it.
My opinion about the hatched changed radically relatively recently. At first I was a little disappointed and thought the thing was too heavy and the shaft was too wide and uncomfortable. Then I kind of got used to it and thought it was ok but nothing special.
In the meantime, I was using other, smaller and lighter hatchets and they felt alright. Maybe even better than the Husqvarna. Or so I thought at the time. Some time ago, I came back to this one and I couldn't believe I'd ever thought it was too heavy, too wide or unwieldy.
What I think happened there was I simply got stronger from using various axes and hatchets for carving (especially with one hand) and suddenly all the draw backs turned into big advantages. I could finally focus on work instead of whining about how heavy the hatchet was.
Yes it is easier to swing a lighter hatchet but because it's lighter you have to lift it higher and drop it faster to get the effect you would when hewing with a heavier one. It's easy to miss and hurt yourself this way. It also isn't as precise as when lifting the axe lower. It's simply a lot easier to hit the spot your aiming for when you don't have to swing the axe too hard.
And finally that wide shaft... It actually assures a firmer grip. It prevents the hatchet from glancing and turning in your hand.
Practice pays off guys :)

Nice concise overview with clear brief demos of your points...and love that you showed your oversight with the sheath, as we can all relate to those "oh sh*t!" moments. Been keeping my eye out for one of these hatchets (not that I "need" another) and this review confirms my desire: inexpensive, well-designed, and good quality.

finally a real review. I get tired of these "unboxing" reviews from people who don't know a thing about what they are trying to review, or a chop test. this hatchet is defintly used and not new, 2 years of use to be exact. I appreciate your video, and would recommend it to anyone it definitely changed my option on the husqvarna. keep up the good work and thanks again!

I love mine. People seem to have forgotten a lot about the use of the axe. They seem to only use it for pounding things or occasionally trying to split wood with one stroke. As far as maintenance or carel, that's totally ignored. As a result people are looking for disposable axes. So the steel has suffered. This axe has good steel and will hold an edge. it can be made shaving sharp.

I almost, almost bought this hatchet but sunk my money into a Gransfors Bruks Wildlife instead (I thought a top-of-the-line brand could compensate for my mediocre axe skills, haha). This is a great video because you thoroughly listed all your first impressions and how you were mistaken when you actually put it to use. Well-edited, too. As they would say in Hollywood, "You're a natural!"

I drilled a hole through the sheath and ran Paracord through it. I tie it behind the head of the axe. Works like a charm!

Hej!

+Simon's Discoveries No właśnie!

Witam. Smarowałem go różnymi rzeczami bo to trzeba powtarzać co jakiś czas.

I love the color of that wood. What kind of oil did you use, and how much did you put on it?
@SimonsDiscoveries
@SimonsDiscoveries 8 лет назад
+Keith Harten It's a mysterious mix by now :) I know I've used linseed oil, mineral oil, maybe tung oil and occasionally vaseline. No all at ones of course. I jus keep oiling the shaft, as the oil washes and rubs off at work, with whatever I have available. But the wood already looked good when it came.

Great review. I have the same problem as you did. I forget to take my knife out of the sheath and start whittling away. Doesn't do the sheath any good I can tell you that. I guess the worst thing though was I forgot to take my truck out of the garage before I drove to town. That one was a mess. So, these things just happen I suppose.

I am looking at Husqvarna axes and hatchets since my GB failed on me. I would still like to make that modification of the edge so far what I heard on youtube i think i just might go with husqvqrna
@SimonsDiscoveries
@SimonsDiscoveries 8 лет назад
+SpartanJohns It's a good all-round hatchet. It's not gonna be great in every single department but I guess that's what you get when you're looking for versatility.
@deathbyastonishment7930
@deathbyastonishment7930 8 лет назад
Is it wise to modify another axe ? I feel you pushed pushed the materials too far.
@chipoftheundead
@chipoftheundead 8 лет назад
+SpartanJohns I've found it's better to have this axe and use for a variety of things than carry bigger axes which then limit you in finer use and can be a problem to carry with your kit. It's like a jack of all trades but a really good jack of all trades. The only problem is if you want to drop a larger tree. I've also found the Hercules hatchet to be an excellent choice too. Although it doesn't come with a good blade cover. It's funny how going for top names doesn't always guarantee the best tool for the job and how going for lower budget doesn't always mean a sacrifice in quality.
@SimonsDiscoveries
@SimonsDiscoveries 8 лет назад
chipoftheundead I've been fighting that thought for a while myself. Some time ago I bought a scandinavian forest axe from Gransfors Bruk and don't use it very often because it's just too long for anything other than chopping. An axe can be a very versatile tool if it's not too long and heavy. The size of that axe is supposed to be a compromise but in reality it turns out to be too long to carve with (sometimes even too long to cary), too light for serious chopping and too thin for serious splitting.

A tytuł zrobiłbym taki: "Husqvarna Hatchet Review - Recenzja Toporka Husqvarna".
@SimonsDiscoveries
@SimonsDiscoveries 8 лет назад
@Mateo-vx5hx
@Mateo-vx5hx 8 лет назад
@SimonsDiscoveries
@SimonsDiscoveries 8 лет назад

Say Heah Simon, Let me share my axes and Hatchets, For my warm weather, My on person carry, I luv my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet and my WarBeast a Tomahawk with three sharp edges I near preform as well as a mid-size Hatchet, Actually, really as good, Then I have the Hultafors Bruks 17 "Agdor Hatchet, I also have the Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe which I really like, It's lite and easy to carry whether on person or attached to my backpack, But I know the weight is important, Because I had a House Axe made using a Oxhead by Iltis which is German made, Anyhow I had it put on a 19" White Hickory Handle and even though it's a thin face because it's a felling head, The weight allows it to split wood just fine, I use it as our camp Axe because it is compact. But I just got a Council Wood Craft Pack Axe with the heavy duty sheath and sling, and all of the sudden it became my Fav. The sling makes it easy to carry, But the steel is also the 5160 and its just a great Axe that's compact and very easy to carry, The sling on the sheath is a great idea. But the Velvet Cut design is awesome and it just chops like a dream. But when your out their in below degree's especially at night, You know alot of wood needs to be processed, Again the weight is very important. So to cope with the actual weight of an Axe, I thought I would go with a longer handle and lighter head, I found that Axe with the Husqvarna All Purpose Forest Axe, It's a 26" handle with a 1 3/4lbs. head, When I got it, From far away it looked like a million dollars, But closer inspection, I noticed glue around the head and handle, I said no problem because it's a economic procedure Axe, But when I looked closer, The eye was defective, They tried cutting the wood to fix that defect, But with this type of tool, I didn't buy that, I now if I was injured I would win the case, It was that obvious, So I sent it back and exchanged it for a Ochsenkopf Axe the head is 1259g and the heft is 700mm 1250g = 2. 7lbs and 700mm is approx. 27. 5+ inches, I also got the Rotband Plus where they connect the head and the handle by placing a plate then screwing it in on top of the eye, I like something new, I never had one like this, But I am familiar with Iltis who makes it. Oh, I also have the Estwing Axe and Hatchets, I have the three sizes and the Sportsman has a Leather Handle, Estwings are almost bomb proof, I also have the Double Bit Hatchet which replaced my Sportsman Hatchet, It was nice to chat with you, Talk to you soon.
