HVAC Air Freshener Trick ~ Rick's Tips DIY

Winter is in full swing and for some of you, I know it can be downright impossible to even think about getting any type of fresh air into the house at this time of year. So in my journey's we found some really nicely scented gel air freshener and I thought I would show you how you can use this to freshen your entire house through your central heating air return!
This can be done with any type of air freshener you choose. These gel types are great because they are small and come with a bit of a lid on them, The really inexpensive cone shaped variety from the air freshener section of the grocery store are great as well. We have even been known to buy those big bags of cinnamon pine cones on clearance and just hang them in the air return to scent the house in the winter.
This is just a nice way to give your home a lift and avoid the winter doldrums that can come at this time of year especially in the more northern regions where the days are very long and I know you all cannot wait for the spring thaw.

they actually make a product for this but it's not very long lasting, i've tried different types of gels and beads and essential oils but the airflow dries everything out very quick. if i could find something to last a month at a time i'd be happy but after several attempts its dried up in less than a week. it's a great idea but i'm still searching for something that lasts .

Shhh. Don't tell anyone but my husband is genius too. He took a pack of Lil square car air freshener. And clipped them on our vents on the ceiling. Hah I thought it was hilarious until it worked . Lol just thought you might like

I can do use fragrances due to allergies, and they just mask a problem. So I tried a product called Nu Calgon Clenair, and it worked for me. It naturally breaks down odors on a molecular level, and makes your house smell fresh. The application is like the video. Just a FYI for allergy sufferers like myself.

This is awesome ! I'd change the scents seasonally so in summer it can smell like a beach , islandy and in the winter all cinnamon spice and everything nice .. But if you want an even longer lasting sent try using super concentrated air freshener by the gallon and use a mason jar with drilled holes in the lid or a lighter plastic jar . NOTHING LIKE WALKING INTO A FRESH CLEAN SMELLING HOUSE! Great job Rick thanks for sharing .

Why don't you pour the gel or beads into the panty hose and hang. Just an idea. I will try this. Great video

+Ora Y Even though they are gel I would be afraid they would "melt" and leak through the hose or netting making a mess in the bottom of the duct.

I have a closed system, so there's no fresh-air in-take. I've put everything from dryer sheets to cups of vinegar to freshener-bead sachets in the vents, but it doesn't seem to help (I live in a very humid area that rarely gets cold enough to freeze, so everything smells musty to me). When I get something strong enough, it gives me headaches. Any tips for a closed system with a neutralizing agent rather than a scented cover or mask?

Sweet! Hey Rick, unrelated... I notice at 4:07 at your kitchen sink that your faucet sprayer washer-thingy is not attached to anything...mine was just installed the same way. I thought they forgot to do it right. What is your thoughts on leaking underneath in the cabinet below and should it be permanently caulked or something? I imagine that would look terrible and get nasty looking after a while, but thought you might know. Thanks

+somuchtolearn4 Yes, you're right, my hand sprayer escutcheon (the part the sprayer nests into) broke from the bottom a little while ago. Truth is, I just haven't gotten around to doing anything about it yet. :) I do, however, plan on using some E-6000 epoxy to "glue" it down to the sink. It won't be as messy as caulk but should be just as waterproof.

Jeanna Walton This was a gel which would have slowly leaked out. But you could use scented pine cones, wood chips, potpourri, or anything that is solid and has a nice scent!

Great idea! I'm wondering if you could use a mesh laundry bag as well so it's easier to change out the scent? Buying one at the dollar store would make it an even better deal

Could I place that in the bottom portion of my gas furnace? There's a strong intake there. Is it safe? The product doesn't say if it's flammable. The flame is in the upper section.

You have an air intake with exposed dry wall any no duck work? I'd seal that to avoid dust. good idea for this situation. Good video.

+Mickey Legalhawk65 This was common practice in older homes. Any dust that might have been in there at one time is surely long gone by now. The walls are sealed and no dust is getting into the duct.

Great video and tip! Do you think that it would be as effective to just open the air freshener and let it sit on the floor in the duct, or is it better situated directly in the airflow?? When our system is on it creates significant air flow so I think that it would still be effective in disseminating the freshener. Thoughts?

With the air freshener in the return air duct it will be recycled throughout the whole house through all the ducts and registers in ALL rooms as opposed to sitting on the floor of one room where it may only make that room smell nice.

Instead of trying to cover scent and making your house smell too extreme, neutralize with bamboo charcoal. Also vinegar can help. Bamboo charcoal has 4 times the surface area of regular charcoal

Our house DOES NOT smell bad! This was just a simple , quick "trick" you can do to help your house smell fresh if you have company coming over or if you're having a special occasion.

Actually, it did. And it will last for a few days. The idea was to freshen up your whole house real quick in case you had company coming over or something.
