I installed a brand new compressor last week and the valves were bad (h2o source HP). I didn't have my camera on me to take the video, but on my compressor the high and low side were the same 132psi. The compressor was running but it wasn't doing any work. I returned the faulty compressor, installed the new one and it worked like a charm. Great vid.

Nice Testo Set. I think you nailed it at the very beginning. "Abnormally High Suction Pressure Usually indicates bad valves". Compressors are not that complicated; they literally only "compress" refrigerant, so if your suction pressure is high (way high), it means the refrigerant is not being compressed thoroughly.

Not all the time, I just found a bad compressor, the low side was low because of a pass restriction problems at the filter dryer, the compressor started frosting at the compressor back to the evaporator...and it had a bad noise coming from the compressor, and this was a 3 phase compressor,All windings reading 1.0 ohms, On 2 of the windings it would read 1.0 ohms then kick off the meter. had to reset the meter....Replaced the compressor, runs GREAT....

Hey Eddie, Another great video...In a year only came across 1 with bad valves, unit still cooled the house but home owner stated unit ran all the time, when I shut the compressor down it hissed like a pissed off snake (easy find)but then again it was over 20 years old.

Thanks for posting this, I know it's old but never the less it helped me today. I found a unit today that I suspected the compressor had bad valves. R22 piston unit had a 104 suction with a 146 head, after scratching my chin for a minute I remembered this video and tried to pump the unit down, no joy. Next, I pulled one of the fan wires and the head pressure didn't move much when it should've shot up. Thanks again!

Great video, great tips. It would be nice to have a bad valve or bad reversing valve video for the new guys too. The guys at East Coast Metal told me that 75% of the returning compressors had no problem found. I was thinking...well lets load them in my van then.

It was on R-410a while the unit was running during the beginning of the video, I don't remember what I did to make it change to R-22 at the end of the video. Thanks for pointing it out

Jomar, check your reversing valve. Your origional compressor may have burnt out because it was bypassing hot gas into the suction.

Thanks for another great video Ed! I got some good notes to go by now! Pump down test and suction line temp after shut down are new ideas to me but, make perfect sense. Cheers

Bad valves are a tough thing to diagnose and if you talk with the manufactures that becomes evident because most of them say that 75% of the compressor sent back aren't bad. In the description I will put a link to a article that I found a long time ago and it might be good for everyone to read.

yes I do.. This is my main unit and the other one cools a add on in the back that has a hot tub but we never use that area..

the primary purpose of your compressor is to raise the temperature of the refrigerant a lot of times you will have a cool discharge line as well when your valves are bad but not completely failed partial failure

A very helpful video. By the way, how much extra refrigerant does your long lineset use above the weigh-in amount on the dataplate? Seemed like a long pumpdown, but I don't have much experience to compare it to. Thanks for posting the video.

can you explain how to by-pass a low-pressure valve to include a little theory or how it work to begin with and why they are critical in some compressor cooling systems

Real technicians? Do you mean part changers because that is all we have these days which is good for the company but its an injustice to the homeowner. I do agree however that a person watching my videos can't be taught in a short youtube video but it can open their eyes to the possibilities of becoming great techs. In my videos I attempt to get people to think outside the box which hopefully one day will erase bad habits, btw about 80% of the people watching my vids are between 45 - 65

If all other things are normal, and the valves start to go bad, your SH will be lower than normal. Especially with a fixed orifice. Every time I found a compressor not pumping, the sh was at or near zero. The compressor cannot pull evap pressure very low so the refer doesn't all boil off, giving you low SH.

hi sir eddie,,i just want to ask something,,we install a new compresor after the old one burnout,,,but the problem is the new compresor is not working properly,,its getting so hot in the suction line then it turns off,,what should i do to make it work.please i need your advise and tips to fix it,,its a split type a/c,,thankyou

oh that was the super heat reading and sub cooling reading that went into neg., my bad. Could I take a pump down closer to 5 for saving a charge for an evaporator leak or line leak repair or is 12 good enough for not wasting much of a charge in a closed system.

You usually have a locked rotor, or a burnout. The best bet with a burnout is to remove all metering devices, reversing valves, accumulators, etc, and flush the system with solvent, and pretty much do a total system rebuild, because that burnout shit will ruin your valves, and your new compressor.

hey thanks I have a ruud unit that the compressor has been sweating it could be over charged but something else I changed the filters it had no effect think im going to open it after its run a bit and then switch it off and feel the suction line it maybe over charged but dk it was serviced last year and charged according to factory specs I watched them do it and they ran it bout 40 minutes before closing it up and the compressor wasn't sweating when they left s I don't think its the charge its a 08 ruud Copland scroll

Eddie, I have a compressor on a 17 year old system that seems to have a bad suction valve. Had a tech last week that didn't know what I was talking about. He thought I had a bad TXV. Suction pressure is high with normal discharge. Having trouble cooling on hot days. I think the pressure coming from the compressor suction side is making my TXV close. Suction sits at about 100 psi for R22 system. Can the valves be replaced?

Hi Eddie !! So to check with pump down test Do you need to back seat both valves or just the high side??

Loving the vids Eddie!! one problem,with the pump down test tho, how do U know if the high side valve on the unit is holding or if the compressor valves are bad :-D :-D

Did you have to bypass the low pressure cutout when you did this?
@pauldang25
@pauldang25 11 лет назад
Hi Eddie, thanks for the video. Why do you have your compressor all wrapped up? Wouldn't that prevent the heat from leaving the compresssor? Also, if my high side is around 160 psi on an R-22 system, and everything else is normal, ie, clean condensor/evaporator coils, does that also suggest that I may have bad valves? Thanks.

Great video Eddie! This hasn't happened often but I have pumped down a couple of compressors that just wouldn't pump down all the way. Half way through the process it would start to make this terrible noise so I would shut the system down and recover the rest of the ref. Could this be do to bad valves? If I remember correctly all three compressors were at least 13 years old.

if that is R 22 those pressures are way to high your compressor is fine you have way too much load on that somebody might have put in a smaller compressor or condensing unit with a larger air handler. easy way to test compressor valves disconnect that outdoor fan your high pressure should go through the roof if your valves are bad your pressure won't even get to 300 on an r22 system many times it won't build up. You'll see the unit with no condenser fan running at 250-300 . it looks to me if thats are 22 you'd only have an excessive load condition hopefully somebody didn't modify the inside the unit and put a bigger unit on there then what it's capable time to look get model numbers of inside equipment and make sure its the same tonnage with a suction pressure that high on r22 you have excessive load your head pressure is too high or not to be your valves are fine

3:43 "...running compressed air in a vacuum..." there should be no air in a closed system, I thought you pulled the suction side down to a neg reading and the high side show neg too, correct?

COMPLETELY WRONG SIR!!! for instance how can the guage read the pressure on the Low side now if you have Locked of the valve at that Point, your guage should be hooked up NOW between the Compressor and the Lock off Valve!! to test if the compressor valves are Leaking!!
