Merry Christmas one and all!
Today Dan get's his own Christmas present when he gets the chance to not only review two of his favourite springers, but he can also put them into a head to head to see which is best!
So is the Weihrauch worth the extra cash or will our budget champion take the victory? Well... Let's find out!

Hi Harry, Thanks mate and I hope you have a wonderful new year! We've already fitted the excellent WWT trigger to the 19 and it already seems to be a vast improvement when it comes to accuracy. Before we have a recap video however I plan on doing a few other mods to it. After that it's internals time! Thanks Harry.

So it should be for the money but, quite frankly, it is simply not worth the extra. Use one of Will Gehrkes (Welsh Willy) trigger kits on the XS19 and you have a super gun. Shameless plug for Will as I have known him for a long time and he is very knowledgeable and a hell of a shot with a springer.

A good fair video! Having had a HW80 some years back loaned off of a friend I can only re-iterate what you've said about them! I have, owned a .177 XS19 now for about 10 years, started off stock like you have there, around 9.5 ft lbs out of the box, I bought some bits from Woodfield GCP / Welsh Willy, namely a new trigger and tune up kit with spring, guides, washers etc and took her up to 10.8ft lbs with washers to spare. No more than 8fps variation on Air Arms Diabolo fields 8.4gr and putting 10 shots through a 5p piece at 35 yards. Marvelous gun out of the box and can be polished up into good, reliable and consistent shot!

Hi Weihrauch! They're excellent little rifles mate they really are and WW's kits are superb. We're currently filming our XS20 review as well which is turning out to be an amazing rifle. We've already fitted the WW unit to our little 19 and we'll then be cutting back the barrel and then fitting a silencer so it's a carbine vs carbine for the rematch. Then we'll sort the internals! Those HW80's are lovely rifles though, they're proper chunkers!

Hi Dan,,I'd say that accuracy result is superb for the xs19 the hw 80 will always be top dog in the break barrels pack but I'd say the gap between them has been narrowed considerably since the hw,s debut and definitely represents good value for money as you mentioned with some tuning along with getting used to shooting the smk you could close that gap still further . great review Dan love a good springer battle old school way demands more skills but can be very satisfying love it atb Dave

Hi David. I was impressed with the little 19 and I've always said that they're a very under appreciated rifle. Great video review. I think the CN-made rifles are fantastic for the price but I'm not so sure the build quality would hold up for the length of time like the HW80 would. But since you could comfortably afford to buy a new rifle every 3-4 years and still have money left over... Difficult to call.

That cheaper rifle looks like a Crosman Vantage. If that is the case, it has a nitro piston. In fact that trigger looks identical to a Crosman trigger. Wish I could show you a picture. I happen to like it for a couple places I rabbit hunt.
@0113mountainman
@0113mountainman 4 года назад
‘80 looks to have a nicer firing cycle in .22. I had a .177 version and the cycle was horrendous, the oversized piston combined with the stiffer .177 spring does not work well together. That .22 looked to give a pleasant nudge on firing, very nice.
@bigdansairguns83
@bigdansairguns83 4 года назад
Hey Steve, I can't comment on the .177 but it was lovely to shoot in .22, it's not the softest .22 I've ever shot but it's very agreeable and with a bit of polishing would probably be fantastic.

My pump Umarex shoots .177 pellets at 830 fps and I paid .$46 bucks for it and spent $45 dollars on a decent Chinese scope … the muzzle energy is about 11lbs… In the UK they regulate even pellet guns… it’s a crying shame… but have a break barrel gamo whisper .22 that shoots 34 lbs of muzzle energy with 29 grain pellets. Cheers from California!

The Hooded fore sight would be better if the Hood could be slid off so could just use an open "Blade" fore sight like for instance on the old BSA Mercury springer. The Hood on the Mercury was made of spring steel & could easily be removed or re attached via the slots machined into the fixed fore sight.

Hey mate haha fancy meeting you here! I was going to order a 99 in for this review but I thought to really put the XS19 to the test I'd go for one of Weihrauch's models that have stood the test of time, first one to pop into my head was the HW80. I personally find the 80 a more complete rifle than the 99s as well. I don't mean to slag the 99s (they're a tremendous little rifle 80% of the time) off but for me at least I'd rate the 80 higher than the 99. So if our XS19 could get close to the 80 it'd be very interesting!

@@rwschannel968 The 99S's are nice little guns to be sure. Not perhaps the most reliable (although not as bad as many let on) but they are sweet once sorted. An interesting video perhaps would be a budget shootout between an XS20, 99S, Norica Storm, and the new London Armoury break barrel. All higher end budget rifles but each one has its own strengths and weaknesses. Have you shot a Norica Storm yet RW? The one we tested a while back was superb, pretty too.

There was a product called "Triflon" - an aerosol with a straw type applicator which coated the cylinder with "Teflon". This made the Piston travel Much quicker down the cylinder. Use with great care - it's deadly poisonous if inhaled but safe once applied. A quick Tune for the less mechanically minded.

One thing we could say is send the bench mark on accuracy out to say 35,40,50m ( max ) 7 I would be sure the HW80 would pip the XS19. A friend of mine had an old chinese rifle over my HW95 & from 10m out to 15-17m you could not tell by much in the accuracy test. But send the same pellets out 30m or more & the 95 won hands down.

Hi, Dan.... Just now found your channel (am here in the west central US), and this is my first video of yours that I have watched.... very impressed and have subscribed to your channel. I picked this video of yours to watch first, because my first airgun that I purchased in 2013, was the HW80 (in .22) in my early 60's years of age. I also have a have a half dozen of the Xisico's (BAM/SMK in the UK?) as well ( I actually have several dozen airguns, now - you can't have "just one" you know ; ) and I "think" that what you call the XS-19 is the same base model that we know here as the Crosman Quest and the "German" Hammerli 550. I also have a Xisico XS-25 FSB (BAM-B25 clone of the RWS/Diana34, Ruger Airhawk, etc.) thumb hole/pistol grip stock made from laminated Bamboo... and of ALL my airrifles (over half of which are German.. Weihrauch, Diana & Walther), my favorite "go to" rifle in .22 is my Xisico (BAM B-25) XS-25 FSB.. it's lighter than any of my German air rifles, deadly accurate, and has been fully tuned by Mike Melick in Iowa, US (FlyingDragonAirrifles dot org) who has done a lot of R&D work for the BAM & SAG-(QB CO2 series) air gun factories in China... and has helped them with a lot of refinements with their prototype guns before production runs begin. The stock (original) trigger is still in place on all my Xisico air rifles, but after Mike reworks them, I have to say that they shoot every bit as nice as any of the Record trigger's on my Weihrauch's. I think that the main difference in the cost differential between the Chinese & German airguns (besides labor costs) is found in the Quality of all the internal parts... meaning, that if shot on a regular & consistent basis... most Any of your "high end" German & British air rifles... will Still be shooting as well, and with no parts breakage.... for Far more Many Years longer, than Any of the much less expensive offerings from BAM, SAG, Snowpeak, or any other "budget friendly" manufacturer... and therein lies the difference in cost.... labor costs, steel & parts quality, overall better accuracy (out of the box), and much longer Longevity with equal amount of use. Thanks again for your work and detailed comparisons... Much Appreciated!!
@bigdansairguns83
@bigdansairguns83 4 года назад
Hey mate! That's possibly the most interesting comment I've ever read thanks ever so much for that. Quite frankly after hearing you read off your list I still think you need more air rifles. There's never too many! I'm glad to hear another one stand up for the Chinese rifles too. Over here in the UK there's still a bit of a stigma about Chinese rifles from people who have usually never shot them. I'd never say that they were better than their German/British counterparts as like you've mentioned at the end of the day they're built to a cost.. but what I will say is that they're nowhere near as far behind as what people think! Plus as you've stated perfectly with a few simple modifications it can be neck and neck between the Chinese and the premium European stuff. Even the stocks are coming on beautifully with the Remington Sabres/Warhawk. Thanks again mate and we'll add an update to this video once we do one more modification to the rifle, it's already had the WW trigger fitted and it's beautiful to shoot.

Nice video...never owned a break barrel and really don’t want to but they are interesting and seeming reliable. Had multi pump guns for over 40 years and now PCPs and will not go back to pump ups unless it’s a bug out situation for survival and then a Sheridan 392 would be the one. That reverse recoil just doesn’t workout in my mind with the break barrel guns. Takes some getting used to I guess. Not ready for that.
@bigdansairguns83
@bigdansairguns83 4 года назад
Thanks Heath. Everybody has their own preference when it comes to airguns but I really do recommend that you spend a bit of time with a break barrel. They are harder to shoot than PCP's but once you start to get a hang of it you'll never go back they're just so satisfying to shoot. Plus once you get the hang of it they're every bit as accurate as a PCP.
@richarddixon7276
@richarddixon7276 4 года назад
The main benefits of using a break barrel springer/gas ram are of course their total independence , the Sheridan 392 may have that , but the reverse recoil from a springer once mastered or even gotten on good terms with, will definitely help when shooting a pcp , liken it to the difference between playing pool on a pool table or playing pool on a snooker table , once You can play well on the big table then the pool table becomes comparative child's play .

Of course the Gamo/B19 barrel returns easier. Because all that locates the barrel in the forks is cheap plastic washers, radically inferior to how HW and a D34 keep the breach block consistent.
@bobthebarsteward
@bobthebarsteward 4 года назад
What a great idea for a review. The difference in price would pay for some upgrades on the XS19, I'd get it hydro-dipped to tone that stock down! The barrels on the Chinese guns tend to come from the factory with a lot of brown gunk in them which really needs cleaning out, the HW80 comes with a choice of all 4 airgun calibers, if you fancy a change. You mentioned the trigger mod you intend doing on the XS, there are other ways to achieve this, the bearing method and the longer adjustment screw, I've even seen one done with a suitable off-cut from a biro tube but doubt the longevity of that mod. I went for the bearing method, and it compares well with the trigger you're going to fit, which I have on my Rapid 7, which also uses that same trigger unit. Incidentally, my Chinese airgun is a Crosman MTR77 (ironic that an American manufacturer should choose a Chinese manufacturer to make an American icon replica) which underneath all that plastic is an XS19 action with a gasram in it, I believe the XS19 is available with a gasram instead of a spring. It's not an easy gun to shoot and I have bought some standard spring bits (actually it's a complete XS19 action) to convert it to a spring gun to see if it's any better, look forward to seeing your tuned up XS19.
@bigdansairguns83
@bigdansairguns83 4 года назад
Hi Robert! The XS19GR is the gas ram model and as with most gas rams they can be a bit hit or miss (pardon the pun). I personally really like them, I found that for the best results hold the rifle semi gently in your leading hand but have the rifle firm into your shoulder. Regarding the trigger tune a good friend of mine does the screw trick and it does make the trigger far more manageable. I've yet to try the ball bearing trick however but I've heard very positive things. Thanks Robert and all the best.
@bobthebarsteward
@bobthebarsteward 4 года назад
Shame you're so far away, you could have tried that Crosman I mentioned, it seems the hold is it's achilles heel, going by the American reviews where admittedly, it is putting out a bit more power than the UK spec guns, one reviewer went so far as to say it needs a tight hold rather than the gentle support we use on a springer. Let's see what it's like with a spring in.

@@OffGridMadMan the screw behind the trigger is very short, replacing it with an M3x10mm screw is supposed to allow you to adjust the trigger pull, I can't say if it affects the pull length, the pull weight, or both. I used the roller bearing method which worked well, there are videos on RU-vid of how to do this. The third option is the Welsh Willy trigger, I have one on my Rapid 7, it gives a really light pull weight but costs £30.

Hi Mark! Thanks for the comment and I agree with you pretty much 100%. As I said you can feel the difference between both rifles and you can easily see which one is the most expensive. But.. when it comes to actual performance the little XS19 is really not that far behind and unlike some of the modern Weihrauchs they're absolutely bomb proof. Regarding the looks of the XS19 I'm thinking that once we carbine it and add a silencer a bit of stippling around the grip would improve it quite a lot. Maybe a touch of stippling on the forestock too? I can't wait to get to work! Thanks Mark and I wish you and the family a brilliant Christmas and a happy new year.

As an alternative I'd highly recommend the Remington Pest Controller/XS19 or the Remington Express Compact. I intentionally pitted the XS19 vs the HW80 because it's more of a flagship rifle compared to the 99S and part of the point of this series is to see how close a budget gun can get to a top of the line springer. In our next videos we'll be tuning the XS19 and continuing on with the shoot off. I think you'll be surprised as to how accurate the XS38's can be especially once they're run in.
