This video focuses on the Hy-gain AR-500 antenna rotator, showing the parts, what it does, and so on. Also shown is the completion of the MFJ-1846 six-band hex-beam antenna. Learn about rotators and why they're necessary. Special thanks to Mike Bergman for help erecting the antenna and to his wife, Amy Bergman, for footage of the actual antenna "walk up."

Hi Dave, When you calibrate the rotator and it says 0°, you can then loosen the beam and rotate it to true north. Now the beam will match the reading on the box. I have a 30 yr old T2X and it's still going strong. It is mounted at the bottom of my 45 ft tubular crank up tower. The entire tower rotates. 73 WB3BJU

Good idea, though my setup doesn't allow easy changes as I have to bring the whole assembly down.

Has the 500 got a notch at the front where you put the antenna pole so it points true north

Tommy Walls Hello, I am KC4ZZE, This is what Ham radio is about, sharing experiences and knowledge to advance the art. I needed a way to rotate the hexbeam remotely 200 miles away from the shack using a RCA VH226E antenna rotator. I came up with a solution after giving it a lot of thought. I purchased a WIFI IR hub and manually programmed the hub training it with the VH226E’s RCA handheld remote control as an experiment. It worked! I can now rotate the hexbeam from my cell phone turning it North, East, West, and South controlling the VH226E Antenna Rotator from my android cell phone using the Tuya App. The IR hub is freely supported by the Tuya app. I watch from two remote cameras to see the inside rotator box and outside antenna rotator operate and turn as I use the Tuya app. The AC power to the inside RCA VH226E box is a manual switch on the side of the box. I set the switch to permanent on position and plugged into a Kasa AC outlet. Now I can rotate my antenna from any where in the world with WIFI connection.

As usual great video. Looking forward to the report on the antenna. I have been looking into the cobweb as well.

Thanks for the video Dave - I wasn't aware there was such a competitively priced rotator on the market - it would work great for 2m/70cms yagis clearly. Looks like they might be coming to the UK shortly.

I agree, lets us hope it does not take Dave 20 minutes to say it works well or does not work well.

Always enjoy Your videos. If I can give You one piece of advice. To reduce the radial (sideways) forces on the rotator, it would be best practice to use something like a (TB-105) THRUST BEARING. The Hexbeam hasn't got a high wind load. but thru the years (speaking from experience) the housing and bearings of these small rotators, will wear. If one extends the tube, where the rotator is mounted on (or lower the rotor - antenna assembly on the mast), so that it goes past the rotator (maybe You have to remove a tab, on the rotator) and is parallel with the tube, where the antenna is mounted on. Put a trust bearing between these two tubes. So the radial forces are now on these two parallel tubes and not on the rotator bearings.

Good suggestion. In this case, the rotator wants to be at the very end of the main mast and also the short piece of mast going to the antenna.

Thanks for video. At 20 feet it will be interesting how much directivity you see on 20 meters. I have a dipole I can rotate by hand and it’s at about 15 feet. Not much directivity with it. I enjoy all the videos.

A HAM IV and control box went for $75, no cable, at Monument. I found a HAM IV and box for $50 a few years ago on a swap list, again no cable. Have a great time on the bands spinning your beam Dave. My HAM M spins every morning on 144.200 for the Beam Spinners. There is also a 4 element TET HB43SP tribander and .7 and 6 meter beams as well as the 11 element 2M beam at the top. The HAM IV is ready to go up when and if the HAM M dies :-) Oh i do have cable to replace the old.

Hi Dave, W0CAS here. I am looking at installing a 25lb 6 band. hexbeam. How has the AR500 worked for the past 5 years? I am in South Carolina and will not have the snow and ice you have.

Did MFJ give you the antenna? I'm truly puzzled why anyone would buy this from them when there are other makers at the price without the quality issue baggage.
@davecasler
@davecasler 6 лет назад
Yes, MFJ gave me the antenna and rotator. The antenna broke because I dropped it from about 10 feet high with a mast attached. I'm surprised I only broke one spreader. The only quality issue I had with the antenna was that the number of number six screws was a few short. Otherwise everything went together easily.

Dave... Could I easily tune the 10 meters wire to 11 meters with ease, kinda wondering if this has been done yet? As I am still on 11 meters. I have erected many 11 beams and want to go into The Ham bands when I finally get my ticket.

You can't set rotator to 0 then manually rotate antenna to north?
@davecasler
@davecasler 6 лет назад
I set the rotator to zero and then mounted the antenna. Unfortunately the antenna is so big that part of it was on the ground. So I got the angle I got without much choice.
