Part 1 of the Hydraulic Gold Mining series. Featuring the devastation of the 1800's Hydraulic mining operations. A first hand look at an old sluice box and the Blue Lead along with some history and pictures. A great informational playlist that goes into every different aspect of hydraulic mining that I could think of. There is a lot of knowledge passed on in this 3 part series and then there are more movies added in on this playlist. If you find more movies with some new information on hydraulic mining that should be included in this playlist then let me know the url & I will add them in here for the person who has them posted :)

Thank you for the videos! I finally have figured out how to work in the old pits with my GMT detector now, thanks to you and some other guys that posted good info. No longer overwelmed and lost when I get to a hydraulic pit. can't wait till the weather clears.

How much of the muck your buddy stood next to for scale is still there? I hope it's even cleaner since your series.

This was buried under 40 feet of tailings for 110 years or so but I come across this stuff every now and again up here.

There is an old saying: "When a geologist asks you to stand for a picture...it is not because he wants to take your photograph...it is because he needs you for scale." Wonderful videos! Cheers!

Well is it part 1 or 4??
@ReedLukens
@ReedLukens 11 лет назад
Nope, it is a stacked wall but this is one of the early old mining camps where there were no Chinese allowed yet. It was one of the first buried by tailings soon after Hydraulic Mining was invented.

@oddsource Now that's funny 8°) hehe, I can't get him to keep quiet now! All I need now is him singing in my ear all day, hahaha.

I'll have a lot more info in the next few clips when I get them put together but you also want to look for the small mounds where they had the monitors set up on. Usually these were never hit and can come alive with a metal detector. Really the rocks in the blue lead out here are a dark midnight blue or almost black. The clay is that color as far as you can see it until it is washed and then the colors start to separate. There you will easily see the turquoise blues mixed with the Gold.

After 3 months of dredging the deepest hole on the upper Arkansas river in CO. I found a Spanish sluice made from a single log,and a fire-ring.35 feet from the surface.Sluice was intact,and went to a museum.

@Ibringthetruth1 - yep, hydraulic monitors. There's pics here in part 6. Then if you go into my hydraulic mining playlist there is another video of actual footage of them being used still today in Alaska. There's some great videos in my playlists.

@Ibringthetruth1 - Nothing bigger than my 8" dredge in the 2006 video or my trommel in its video. Usually it's just 2 of us but that was an exceptional find that day so I invited a couple of friends who were just getting into gold mining.

@winching4au Well if it was steel and about 1½" around then it was probably a broken drill bit stuck in the bedrock or part of an old bucketline dredge but you never know until you dig it up 8°) In many cases the swimming holes that we use today were made by miners originally and if it was at the front of the hole then this is probably the case. If it's wood then it could be part of an old sluice. The sluice box here was covered for over 100 years in tailings and now it's gone, washed down river

May have been at one time but being in the river, there wouldn't have been much of a chance of it being anything other than maybe a longtom from the 30's. It may have been part of a sluice but there's only one way to find out :) hehe. They did flume back in the day and more than likely it may have been part of one of them. We do know that it was for gold mining anyway. I'd say there's maybe a 30% chance on it being a sluice & I'm 50/50 on a flume. The wood would be so old that it would crumble

It was great at extracting gold but it was also extremely bad for the enviroment. So glad this method got outlawed.
