Luv the Hrdro-Blok product. Reasonably-priced and a very clever system. Just did a 84"x60" walk-in with their one piece low profile pan! Very slick.

Is a moisture barrier needed when applying to plywood or is that not a concern with modified thinset?

No, you want the thinset to bond pan to plywood. A primer would no doubt benefit the strength of bond 👍 www.lowes.com/pd/Sika-Primer-1-Gallon-Liquid-Indoor-Primer/1002400308
