Epic duel of hydrofoils with fun along the way. Action shots on location at El Capitan reservoir, near San Diego, California. Steve Ball and Dwight Filley are the pilots and creators of these original light weight hydrofoils. One is gas powered, the other Electric. They compete for style and grace with some surprises in their wake.

Oh this is great stuff Ray Congrats ! The day will go down in history as one the defining moments of the electric versus fossil fuels debate. And I believe the electric didn't go over due to a more refined and efficient drive train ! Ha ha so funny both of you smashing them over. There's only one way to settle this ha ha you indeed have a good partner in crime. I was hoping to make one fly with those new foils they are using in the red bull boats. Friends have suggested stand up paddle boards as the most likely candidate for the experiment. I notice you both seem to using variants of the water skipper wing. I was interested in using two of the C foils each with a motor and drive train at the elbow. My mate Cheyne Horan with his star fin loves this stuff and has loaned me is foil on occasion. I have some electirc bikes and was going to use those 250 watt motors to start but obviously would need a tow or a wave to get going ha ha ! 2100 watts that's HUGE Dude ! Love the harder prop idea as well was going to start with model airplane ones but must be too flexy who do I need to throw a carton(of beer) as they say down here to get a couple ha ha ! Have the big tech knob done the numbers on a surface piercing prop like they have on the old Asian boats ? God you guys are great so funny and such a great thing ! Fly or Die Baby !

Science wins… zero debating science 👉 Ducted propeller creates more power through efficiency, like Submarines have ducted propellers. Means I should send this to the foil races above as they’re looking to create more power. Nice videos. Do you know what HP each was running? And are they using boat propellors, model airplane propellors, or something else?

Hi Scott, Both boats are now using propellers designed by Ray Johnson, our "rocket scientist", of the team. R. J. does the calculations and the propellers are printed out of metal in 3 dimensions. They look a lot like model airplane propellers, but are much stiffer. Mantis is using about 2100 watts. Bix Bixby has designed and built the telemetry, and his MIT engineering degree requires him to express watts, not horsepower. I'll check with the guys to see if other performance figures are classified. What do you think of Hydro-Cat going electric? The power train is really light weight. Look out Tesla.... Ray Vellinga Thanks Ray, I said HP but can use any form of measurement provided. I've been thinking of a low power project for a while, and was curious how much power they were using and what kind of speed they are getting. I have also thought a lot about propellor design, but am not aware of any reference material on how to design one. Aside from having my own machine shop I can also do metal casting. Does Ray have a guideline of sorts for designing propellors, Or is it too complicated to figure out for someone not 'in the business'?

why has they're been so little in the way of hydrofoil design, and products for the market place? it reminds me of enclosed motorcycles,we know it works better,but ?

+Thomas Lewis Watching a giant sailboat moving across the water on foils ,pushed by the wind at 60 mph tells me,were doing something very wrong
