I realize the value of the produce is low compared to the cost and effort. This was just an experiment.
I did this grow to test out the QGLED light strips and to see if it would be even possible to get any ripe, edible fruit from a low amount of light. Obviously I chose a smaller variety because it would not be possible to grow a lager melon with such low intensity. However I do feel that it would be possible to grow a larger variety under twice this wattage. Perhaps a Crimson Sweet? I think that will be a future video.

You did a dam good job growing those indoors ... i didn't expect them to grow .. but one thing i did notice and i think that if u had enclosed the sides and top with reflective material it would have Tripled your led output resulting in bigger fruits . we can't bring the sun and nature indoors we can only replicate it best we can and this a dam good job . i am going to try this

I would suspect that such "luxury produce" would only be grown after a colony is very well established and have an energy surplus. However, lighting technology may get even more efficient by then. People in the 1980s didn't see LEDs as we know them today coming. It's shocking to me how much light comes from LEDs. I grew up around incandescent bulbs. I grew up thinking 100 watts was not enough light. 100 watts of LED is blinding lol.

Typical is 16 hours. I don’t think melon plants care about the day length. Flowering issues is usually an age thing or nutrient mix tying.

I'm actually quite interested in trying this out for myself, minus the 100 watts of light setup. Question is: for your aeroponic hybrid setup, how do you maintain temperatures and ensure that there is no anaerobic bacterial growth in the system? Or is that not a factor, given its aeroponic-inspired design?
@GrowingAnswers

Dylanrockin basement temperatures stayed around 72 and the pump wasn’t that powerful. Less heat build up

@Adol666
@Adol666 3 года назад
1000 watts is one KW. Electricity is measured in KWH. A lot depends on the price you pay for kwh. Example I run two 300w led for 16hr a day so .6kwh. Take the hrs a day times your kwh. So im running 9.6 kwh per day time 30 days gives me 288kwh per month. Now take that a multiply by the price of your electricity.(in my case .10 per kwn) 288 x .10 = 28.80 a month to run my lights

Thank you for the information. I've seen people use a brush to transfer the pollen from male to female. Is there a way to get the plant to produce more fruit?
@GrowingAnswers
@GrowingAnswers 6 лет назад
Penelope Carr more light, heat, and pollination. You could also use a q-tip. Probably a nutrient adjustment is the biggest thing for fruit set. I had plenty of babies, but many did not set.

Thank you. I've seen someone grow baby watermelons outside with aquaponics, and I've been wanting to try with the Kratky method, but you sold me on the aeroponics.
@GrowingAnswers
@GrowingAnswers 6 лет назад
I would not do kratky for melons. For plants like that there really needs to be good circulation or oxygenation.
@ehcoroche8689
@ehcoroche8689 4 года назад
@@GrowingAnswers of course the best way to find out would be a Kratky VS DWC melons video done by a generous RU-vidr. Cough. Or you know, Kratky VS DWC VS proper high pressure aeroponics with very precise water droplet size, of which would be entirely unrealistic for anyone to attempt with a household budget. Jeb Gardner did Kratky pumpkins and besides the horrible disease and death they worked out pretty good. You could also try mychorrizae and beneficial microbes for some more variables in other non-melon, or even melon-related videos.

96watts running on an avarge of 15 hours a day is almost 1.5kW now one kW costs 0.25 in my country so that is close to 40 cents a day. This was running for 12 weeks so that is 84 days times 40 cents makes it a $33 melon. Not even counting the pump and nutriants. Think ill skipp this :-)

thats sort of hard to tally. I mean, the aeroponic set up was under $30, but that does not include the net pot, rockwool, nutrients, clay pebbles, lights, power usage ect. I had all the physical stuff already.

@@GrowingAnswers Looking at that list, your growing media for each plant was likely under a few dollars per plant I'm guessing. The lights I am unsure of but its difficult to calculate a cost on something that can be reused dozens and dozens of times.

@@GrowingAnswers I understand what you're point was. I was just stating a fact for the other folks. Also, I'm sure you know this. But them sugar baby watermelon don't get to big, even when growing outside. I grow those sugar baby watermelons, along with 2 other kinds every season. Those little watermelons sure are sweet. Their the sweetest out off the 3 I grow. That was a neat idea you had when you built your little hydro/areo ponic system. I've been growing with LPA (Low pressure areo) for 10 years now. And it is so easy. You just need to know what are the best things that you can grow that way. I built 4 systems that I grow with all year, indoors of course. Each system consists of 2, ten site grow chambers with 1 reservoir. Each system measure 3'x3' and I use 1, 3'x3' LED light over each system. Anyway best of luck.
